This is the beer that started it all. The generic name "pilsner" I has the honor of actually visiting the brewery when I lived in Prague and tried this unfiltered too. Whoa... thats strong. Glad to see the Pilser Urqull is making its way around the states.

On-tap at several locations in Prague, CZ

Very clear & golden, light white lacing.

Smell is sharp hops.

Taste is the same, very bitter & sharp hops that stick with you. Very, very crisp. Tastes fresh. Flavor does not live up to the nose.

Lots of CO2, light and sharp.

If you like hops, you can drink it. I personally prefer the darker beers available in prague and was not impressed with this one. Over-rated as an import. I personally find it harsh there (at the Pilsner Urquell pub itself, so don't claim it was not fresh) and here as well.

This Beer pours a very light amber color with a small white head that has good retention. I like this beer. It has a very good crisp taste with lots of hops. Not perfect in the after taste but I really do like this Pilsner beer. This is one that I would buy and enjoy again.

This beer pours a clear golden color. The head is a frothy two inches in height, and recedes very slowly into thick, chunky lacing. The aroma is of bready malt with a touch a spicy hops. The taste is on the maltier side too. There is a hint of hops, but not as much as I would expect from a Czech Pilsenser. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lively carbonation. Overall, this is a decent beer, but there are better pilseners out there.

I reviewed this beer from a bottle and gave it a C+...on tap it was another story.

On tap this beer was absolutely delicious!!!
Makes me think that there is just a high chance of this beer getting "skunked" in the bottle.

Beautiful hop finish, and very drinkable.

Clear yellow body with a small white head that leaves great lacing.

Smell is no good. Metallic.

Taste is a huge improvement on the smell. Although it retains the unwanted metallic characteristics, he does have some nice floral-like pilsner malts.

Thin, crisp mouthfeel.

Above Average drinkability if the smell doesn't put you off too much.

Sampled from a keg, poured into large pilsener glass. (Results also obtained from 12 oz. bottle).

A: Average, pale yellow. Not very colorful. Average head despite coming from the tap (less head from bottle).

S: I don't care for the smell of this beer, which has always seemed skunky when it should be floral (and I've had it on several occasions, so it's not one bad batch).

T: This is a nice tasting pilsener. It's pleasantly grainy or bready. The bitter taste, which may also occasion the smell I don't like, is very good and hits several parts of the taste buds.

M: Good to sip or slosh around or chug. It's not overly sharp or bubbly.

D: A solidly drinkable beer; it's a nice compromise choice in that its taste shouldn't offend (nor overly impress) anyone. As other reviewers have noted, drink this cold or its skunkiness will be more pronounced.

I've enjoyed this beer on many occasions, but it's no longer a favorite due to its mild taste.

The renowned Pilsner Urquell definately lives up to its high rating...one of the best Pils I have tasted.
Pours a golden yellow colour, with nice head, although would have like the head to stick around longer...a little lacing. Not too lively in the carbonation.
Smell: definately strong malt in the nose...not too 'lagerish' or hoppish in the aroma - nice
taste is very palatable - sweetness across the tongue with honey maltiness, & just that decent kick of bitterness expected with a pils.
Mouthfeel is although fine, enough carbonation to not feel flat & gives the whole spritzy, malty bitterness a real good mouthfeel & ease of drinking.
Drinkability: read above...its one of the best pils I have enjoyed. Definately alive without it being too wild & raw.

color is darker than i'd expected--almost a dirty brown when poured into a wide glass. not much head retention.
aroma has a distinctly roasted character, and the grassy hops are very noticeable. but something seems a bit wrong, too assertive.
flavor follows the smell; finish thuds to a stop pretty quickly.
headache came on halfway through. hmmm.

The most famous of all Czech beers and still one of the best they say. True? Well... off the tap this one was a pure gold color, good clarity, with a two finger bright white head. The aromas were taut, green and grassy with some metallic elements. The flavors were dry and bitter, hops, corn and some wheat. The mineral/metallic quality sticks s to the tongue at the end. Crisp and refreshing but not entirely pleasant. Very light body but a very good mouthfeel. Certainly a classic but not my favorite.

12oz bottle poured into a Pilsner glass.

A - Clear gold in color with a good 3 finger thick bright white head that has setup nicely and refuses to leave.

S - Robust malt grassy up the nose.

T - Spicy hops and the earthy grassy grains shine through.

M - Crisp and clean, light bodied.

D - Not my favorite style, but a nice showing from "The Original" brewed in Pilzen...

The original Pilsner, not one that I drink very often, mainly becuse in common with Gambrinus it has gone down hill since being bought by SABMiller.

It pours a rich golden colour, which has a slight amber tinge to it, if poured well there is a nice head that leaves traces all the way down the glass.

It is bitter, but that's a good thing - remember this is the original. Yes the bitterness is pronounced but it is not overpowered and actually makes a nice change from the bland Eurolager imitations.

The mouthfeel is clean and sharp, making this a beer which can be enjoyed time after time.

The beer pours and looks good in the glass. Golden hue, white one inch head and some lace to be had. Classic look.

Aroma of sulphered metal, typical lagered aroma.

Taste is of the grains of corn and wheat. Feed like. Sulphered water in a metal jacket. Some sweetness. Some hop crispness.

The mouth is treated to a crisp beer, refreshing but left with that feed like aftertaste.

Not bad drinkability, best when cold to avoid any skunkness, but hey, its mass produced and a Czech pils indeed.

Picked this up on a whim.

Poured a clear crisp golden yellow with a bit of thin white head.

Smells of hop and grain.

Taste is very sharp and pronounced. Hop is dominant, bitter and upfront. A bit of a grassy citrus finish. Flavor lasts in your mouth long after you've swallowed.

Mouthfeel is very nice. Crisp and clean, it feels very refreshing and light. Carbonation is perfect.

This beer goes down pretty awesome, and the drinkability is good. This would be a good summer beer and I'll be getting more. Granted, this isn't for every situation and I'd drink it sparingly, but its got such a nice feel.

At a friend's beer dinner

A - Golden yellow in color, moderate head, which dissipates slow.

S - Honey, malts, slightly minerally, and biscuit. This is quickly becoming a favorite malt (biscuit).

T - Honey, malts, and biscuit with a slght minerally flavor.

M - Very light, but fairly well balanced considering this is a pilsener.

D - Excellent. Would love to have more and will need to purchase some at the store soon.

A - Golden straw color... Slow disciplined carbonation... Thin pure white head quickly dissipates, leaving a delicate lacing...

S - Nice complex aroma... Peppery notes... Orange zest... Really a good smelling pilsner...

T - Mild hops... Grain... Biscuit... Spices... Nice complexity for a pilsner...

M - Light bodied and crisp... Very dry...

D - Bery good pilsner... I'm typically not a big pilsner fan, but this one hit the spot... While supposedly not as good as the original, it is a tasty treat of a brew that I'll seek out in the future...

Bottle / Art - Classic and simple... Nice embossed Archway from on the green bottle...

I've had this beer a bunch of times from the bottle and now a few times on draft and it always seems quite a bit better on draft. I've had some bottles that were a little skunky so those have been hit or miss. I'm re-rating this based on my draft on 4/9/08. Golden colored with just a relatively thin head. Bready malty flavor with a touch of sweet fruits, a richer mouthfeel than expected and crisp, clean and refreshing. A sour note surfaces as the beer warms a touch. I'll certainly get it again but maybe not often via the bottle as I fear Mr. Skunk. Solid brew.

Pours a nice deep golden colour with a thin head that stays throughout the drink.

Smells sort of grassy, malty, bready and some floral hops are present.

A nice tasty pilsener, nice biscuity malts and pretty bitter for a pilsener, leaves a nice refreshing aftertaste leaving you to want more.

A velvety smooth mouthfeel, not too carbonated, and an easy drinking beer, but does fill you up after a few.

A: When poured from a bottle to a pilsener glass, this beer had golden color and a good half inch of head. Decent lacing as well.

S: This one had a distinctly grassy aroma, along with some citrus elements. There was a faint skunky quality, as well.

T: Tasted of hops, a little lemon and a slight grassiness. Only a bit skunky (for a beer in a green bottle). Left an unpleasantly bitter aftertaste.

M: A fair amount of carbonation and a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

D: I'd heard a lot about how great this beer is, but I don't think I'd put it that high up on the pedestal. It's OK, with some decent parts, but it doesn't quite measure up.

3.73/5  rDev +4.8%
look: 3 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.5

Appearance:
The brew is just a solid golden color - nothing more nothing less. Head formation is quick, but it fades quickly; thus, the retention and lacing are minimal. There isn't a whole lot of carbonation, either. It looks pretty average to me.

Smell:
This may sound strange, but it really does smell like grass. There are also mild hints of bitterness from the hops and a slight biscuit character from the malt. Sweetness seems to be absent while the grassy smell seems to dominate.

Taste:
It doesn't taste nearly as grassy as it smells. The biscuity malt flavor is fairly strong and complimented nicely by the bitterness of the hops. This brew is not excessively bitter and is also augmented with some slight spiciness; both are present in the aftertaste. It seems that the "KISS" philosophy applies here - not bad at all.

Mouthfeel:
Though this is a pretty light beer, it's not watery by any means. It doesn't feel too heavy in the mouth or on the tongue.

Drinkability:
This brew finishes crisply and cleanly. Combine this with the fact that it's pretty light and you've got one poundable beer. The flavor isn't bad, but you wouldn't miss too much if you did, in fact, decide to "pound" this.

Summary:
This is better than some other pilsners that I've had. While there doesn't really seem to be anything special about this beer, I'd say it's somewhat above being merely average simply because the bitterness isn't too excessive. The grassy smell isn't nearly as strong in the flavor and the maltiness is just right. It seems like a well-balanced, easily poundable import - not really much to complain about.

t: light biscuit malt upfront with surprisingly bitter spicy, tea-like hops in the finish. a tad skunky.

m: very smooth and crisp.

d: Light and easy drinking, but a big enough hop bite to keep you interested.

I don't know if they made the world's first pilsner, but I can say that as far as I can tell they make the best pilsner that is widely available here in the states. I know that better ones are out there (prima pils for one) but this beer can be found everywhere you go and yet it is still pretty good.

Knowing that this beer can beer skunked fairly easily from the bottler, a can seemed a better choice. We start with a deep golden color, that fades to a pale yellow at the bottom of the glass. A puffy, creamy colored head forms on top, with a small traces of carbonation along the glass. A very bready to bicuity fragrance at first, then the spiciness from the hops finishes it all out. A malty and bread flavor comes out at in the flavor, and dominates till it reaches the back, and a mild grassy bitterness comes out at the end. A light feel at the front becoming more medium bodied at the end, leaving the palate clean and dry. This is and easy to drink and refreshing beer. The can does make a big difference in every aspect of this beer.

Poured from a bottle. The beer is pale yellow color, very clear, with a perfect white foam. The first whiff is a little skunk but I can't detect it after a few minutes. Mostly I get a nice hops aroma (more floral than citrus) and a light malt too. The flavor is subtle but delicious, a nicely balanced lager slightly favoring the hops. Very drinkable, an excellent beer.

This is a solid last resort beer at many establishments, including Yankee Stadium (there was a beer guy in the stands selling only Pilsner Urquell, but you had to look for him). If all that's available are macro lagers I usually go for this.

Poured a clear golden color some short, quick fading white head.

Mostly a grainy scent, with some hopps.

Light bodied, crisp feel, with very high carbonation.

Pretty easy drinker. This is something I could probably drink quite often.
