Mahogany coloring with a very coarse cream-colored head. Big aromas of fruit, citrusy hops, and some sweet malt. Very light carbonation. Medium body. Taste shows impressive balance, although it's heavily hopped for a brown ale--not a bad thing, but possibly pushing the limits of the style. Hop bitterness is present throughout, and long into the finish, which is pretty drawn out. Balance is provided by a toasty/biscuity malt profile. Very easy drinking. A heck of a brown ale.

Picked this up in Brat last month while back there for a weekend,poured into an imperial pint glass a lighter chesnut brown with a thinner but well sustained slight off white head.Floral citric hop really stuck out during the pour wich was a pleasant surpise that intertwined with a lightly sweet brown sugar note with a bit of lightly roasted malt,again the hops really perk up the flavors of this brown,the sweetness is there with some brown sugar and molasses tones but the leafy,citric finish steals it for me.I really liked this brown to me this is more of a American hopped up brown than English,well done.

Hazy, muddy looking, dirty brown color. Nice lumpy head that leaves thick lacing around the glass. Aroma is hoppy, no malt. Flavor is initially toasted malt and caramel, with some hints of hop coming through. Also nuances of citrus and honey and apricot. Very complex and changing throughout the glass. Mouthfeel is crips and a bit tannic. Nice beer.

This pours a dark brownish red with a huge tan head. The smell is very hoppy with really no spices or malt. The taste is very hoppy,see the pattern!!. There really is non of the malt characteristics of a brown ale. The m/f is light and well balanced. This is a good IPA. I don't know why it's a brown ale. I would have rated it higher if the labling was accurate.

Fresh bottle from brewery, hand bottled. Brown with lots of lace. Bubbly head. Smelled like a scotch, tasted quite hoppy like an amber cross-style. Very secondary malty, with some chocolate malts. A different expectation than a brown. Suitable carbonation.

This bottle-conditioned offering pours a surprisingly clear mahogany body with an orange cast and ruby highlights beneath a short head of yellowed-white foam.

The nose is malty and buttery with a fruitiness like fresh summer berries (strawberry!) and a touch of cake and brown sugar.

The delicate natural carbonation leaves it smooth across the palate with just a gentle caress of bubbles at the front of the tongue.

In the flavor, the fruitiness and buttery tones of the Ringwood yeast remain; brightening the toasty malt. There are notes of baker's chocolate, brown sugar, and molasses; as well as leafy and grassy hops. A brisk bitterness builds at mid-palate and lingers with the hop flavor as the malt erodes, finishing quite dry and bitter.

Ahhhh.

A wonderful brown. Just wonderful. A strong toffee-like malt presence with nice leathery hops dominating the smell and making a strong statement in the taste.

Like a lot of the McNiell's beers I've had, it is hard to write a long review about this beer. This is largely due to the abject lack of flaws. I mean, ultimately, the marks I've given against this beer are purely ones of personal taste.

A great, great beer.

Beautiful dark chocloate brown with a nice head that leaves ample lacing. The smell is extremely inviting...hoppy with a coffee/chocolaty bouquet. The taste is excellent...The hoppiness of a fine IPA with the coffee bite of a stout or porter. Mouthfeel is nice with a medium body and crispness. Nice to drink, just smooth enough but with enough kickback to keep you honest.

Sample was about 2 years old, sitting in my homebrewin' partner's fridge, I must have brought it to his place about a year ago and we both forgot it. If I gave points for label art, this dot-matrix printed, glued with homemade paste train wreck would get a -3. But I guess that's what gives Ray and his quirky pub the charm it has.

Appearance: Almost totally opaque brown, with hues the color of dark candi sugar. My tulip shaped glass held the half-centimeter head well enough.

Smell: Nutty and sweet, like hot honey roasted almonds, with a light lactic twang. Not much hops, which is ordinarily used liberally at this brewery, but I guess the age of the sample had it's part of blame for that.

Taste: The acidity comes out first, usually in an cellared sample this comes with a loss in body, but not in this case, in fact it had more than most brown ales I've sampled before. Finish is acrid like rancid nuts, not exactly pleasing but still just for the fact that this Beer had actual body, I'd still put it in my personnal upper-tier of brown ales.

This beer is a slightly hazy brown with slight auburn highlights on the edges. Smallish white head with quite a few tiny carbonation bubbles seeking the top of the glass. The aroma is a bit muted consisting of a malt base with some chocolate and caramel in the background. The taste is delivered immediately to the tongue at the head of an unpleasingly strong rush of carbonation. A strong malty base supports some sweeter flavors like chocolate and a tiny caramel flavor in the background. A surprisingly strong hop bitterness arrives in the middle. It finishes with an unpleasant metallic twang. I was hoping this would soften as it warmed, but unfortunately it hung around. The aftertaste is a combination of hop bitterness, malty sweetness, and metal. The mouthfeel is a little too carbonated, as mentioned earlier. This is a fairly nice beer, but it has a few problems. Cleanup the metallic off-taste, ease off the carbonation, and perhaps soften the hop bitterness (this is supposed to be a brown, right?) and you would have a fantastic beer.

A: The beer is very hazy brownish red in color. It poured with a thin creamy white head that left a big patch of bubbles on the surface and a thick ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of citrusy hops in the nose along with some hints of nutty malts.
T: The taste has flavors of grapefruit hops along with hints of nutty and toasted malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite flavorful but seems to be more like an India Pale Ale compared to a brown ale with all of its hop flavors.

Appears a hazy brown with a huge 3 finger off white head with nice resiliance. Lacing is left behind.
Smell is ok. Malty but very homebrew-like, as I think many of McNeil's beers have the tendency to be. A faint whiff of corn syrup is buried in there, along with hops.
Taste is of a citrusy hoppiness and maltiness. A bit of nuttiness and some dark malt.
Mouthfeel is ok. Medium bodied, sweet and sour

22ozer from Waterbury Beverage, Waterbury, VT.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed an uneven 1/4-1/2" tan head over a dark reddish-brown brew. Head again similar to a cask ale, kind of light and big-bubbled, and laces well. Sweet malty aroma, with hops evident as well. Flavor is sweetly of malt, then followed by a slightly citrusy hops effect. As has been noted for many of the other McNeill's brews that I have had, mouthfeel is somewhat disappointing with the low carbonation (not unexpectedly). A nice session brown ale, one you could stick with all day if that was your desire, but Ray makes so many, it's hard to stay with just one.

Note: This bottle was labelled Slopbucket Double Brown, which I think is the same as this Slopbucket Brown in the BA database. I did see someone else reviewed the Double Brown as being this brew.

Served on tap at Drop Off Service in New York, NY

A: Pours a cloudy light brown with a half finger tall off-white creamy head. The head reduces but the entire surface of the beer stays covered with a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant lacing is observed.

S: Not quite as malty as I was expecting and with a little more hop notes than I was prepared for... Grapefruit hops really dominate the aroma.

T: There is some light hints of nutty, toasted, and caramel malts but the flavor is also dominated by the grapefruit hops.

M: Medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: More like an English IPA than a Brown Ale but nonetheless still a very enjoyable beer and one that is very easy to drink. Perfect spring beer.

Poured in a dark copper brown colour and with an abundance of thick foam. The smell was of scouring pail (not slopbucket), yeast, citrus and caramel. The taste was rather sharp and bitter, like grapefruit. Kind of pine forest, if you know what I mean. It was good but could have been more full-bodied. Some residue in the bottle.

Had on tap at McNeills, poured a dark brown with some redish tints at the edges, nice beige one finger head.

Smell is of malt, light raisins, and some good hop presense.

Taste had a definate malt backbone but it seemed to have too much in the way of hopping for this particular style. Other flavors include darker raisins than in the smell, and some brown sugar.

Right amount of carbonation though, not to much not to little, enough for the tongue but doesn't overwhelm the beer. Drinkable wise it is good, but I don't remember this brew with this much in the way of hops, I will have to revisit next time.

A: Chestnut-brown, light tan head, some retention & lace.

S: Initially some yeastie aroma (slightly earthy), then the orange citrus comes through, along with some candied sugar.

T: Earthy-orange with a hint of grapefruit (plenty of hops), brown sugar, beer nuts. Good name, but an Imperial Brown would provide more of a heads-up!

M: Light to moderate body, moderate carbonation.

D: Good.

22oz bomber, stored refrigerated for a couple weeks.

pours a reddish brown, rather clear and lacking any visible bubblage in the body. thin, choppy foam topper. random clouds of lacing here and there in the glass. nose is extremely hoppy with slight vegetal presence. baby diaper and peanut skin appear briefly. smoky malts. flavor is rather abrasive, full of chalky overused hops, tilled earth, licorice, and mcneills trademark tart yeastiness. alot more carbonated in the mouthfeel than it looks, but sharp taste profile prevents drinkability from reaching a decent level. not recommended.. maybe a bad bottle and i promise to try it on tap when i hit the brewpub.

a english brown for hopheads? just doesnt make much sense to me.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber bottle purchased from Brattleboro. Appearance is, well, brown. Not quite as red as some other brown ales, but perhaps a little more "hazy" looking. The smell is malty -- a little toasty/nutty. Mouthfeel is a maybe a little thin (but still good), belying what one might expect from the appearance. But the taste...ah, the taste is excellent. A well-rounded brown ale. More complex in malt character than some other examples of the style and definitely more aggressively hopped than some might be used to in a brown. That said, it works wonderfully. The sweet malt backbone is effectively complemented by the aroma and bittering hops, resulting in one darn tasty beer. Just two pieces of advice: 1) Don't buy only one bottle! 2) Don't think of the name as you drink the beer (grin). Enjoy!

22 oz. bottle with photocopied black and white label just like in the picture. Pours a dark coppery brown with a thin tan head. Some chocolate malt notes and grassy hops. Malty and rich, with some caramel malt shining through. A bit of tea-like astringency in the finish. I honestly expected a fuller bodied brown ale, but this is nice. The moniker double Brown was a bit misleading, but it's what's inside the bottle that matters. A nice, drinkable brown ale.

Pours a nice cloudy brown with a short lacey head. Nice and hoppy for a brown. There is plenty of malty sweetness to balance the intense hops. Overall flavor is actually quite complex. Many things going on, but the hops bring the beer into focus. If this is double brown, I'm down with the style.

Acquired from the Brattleboro Co-op.

A: Pours a semi clear brown color with reddish hues. Frothy off white head that holds some retention. Decent lacing.
S: Robust with roasted malt notes. Slight ashtray like aromas also. Surprising fruit notes also noticeable.
T/M: Roasted malt notes. Slight fruit presence before a nice strong bitterness crosses the palate. Hops are relatively powerful. Sweet sticky caramel flavors are noticeable but light. Dry finish with a lingering bitterness that's quite puzzling. Is this a hybrid brown/esb? Not that it's bad, I just want it to make up it's mind. Balance is a bit off.
D: One of the better bottled beers I've had from McNeill's--I'm a bit surprised as I went into this with the assumption this was going to be a drainpour. A nice session style brew. Malty, with a big hop profile. Interesting enough, but not one I'd get again.

22 oz. bomber, bottle conditioned. Hazy brown with a gorgeous tan head that leaves sheets of lace. Piney hop aroma with bready, toasted malt and caramel notes. Taste – this is one seriously hopped up brown. Resinous, oily hops predominate. Toasted caramel and some faint chocolate is noted. Awesome brew. Medium mouthfeel. Moderate carbonation – smooth with incredible drinkability, dangerously so. Consumed at cellar temperature. Outstanding.

Pours a deep reddish brown, slightly hazy, but fairly clear bodied.
Topped with an off white head, leaves thick rings of lace.
Nutty, bread like malt aroma, pine and citrus, hoppy aroma for a brown ale.
Malty taste (roasted and quite sweet), nut, butter, citrus (grapefruit), caramel, honey and bread.
Smooth, medium bodied and crisp. Like an Indian Brown Ale.
