This is a very balanced beer. This is mild dark beer but still has a great taste. If you are looking for a great stout or porter, I'd look else where, since this is not either of those styles. It's a lager and it tastes like one. This would be a good beer for those that hate dark beers. Good year round in my opinion!

Have had this many times at the Farmhouse in Burlington, it seems to always be on tap.

A brand new McNeill's beer? Say what?

Pours a pitch black color with a small brown head into my glass. Let there be dark, for it's on these black seas that I sail!

Roasted malt peeks through with very little hop essence and dare I say, a smidgen of coffee. Cocoa and cream are present as well.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering coffee, cream and cocoa. Very laid-back and easy going.

I'm sure that I sound like an idiot here but I thought this was going to be one of those blasted American Black Ales. Boy, was I wrong! It's an excellent stout that's worthy of your time, especially in this cold weather and being so close to St.Patty's Day.

On tap at Groveland Tap in St. Paul last night, took notes while drinking.

A: Heaviest looking lager I have ever seen, letting very little light in at the edges. Nice mocha head with beautiful lacing. Nearly pitch black.

S: Toasted grain, cocoa, lightly sweet. Nothing amazing, but very pleasant.

T: Clean roasted malt flavor with mild sweet chocolate and cereal grains, subtle but fresh hop bite at the end.

M: Very crisp and yet creamy, feels both fullbodied and fresh. Nice smooth carbonation throughout. Finish is crisp and wet.

O: This was an excellent beer, I would have no issues drinking more than 2-3 in a season. Great flavor and body, flavor doesn't subside.

Saw this on-tap at McNeill's and had to give it a try. Served in a pint glass. Pours one shade shy of black with no head, just a soapy skim across the surface and a thin, tight band around the edges. Nose expresses chocolate malt, roasted notes and an earthy quality. Taste follows nose, but a bit bolder with the addition of a pleasant lactic sweetness. Mouthfeel is light in body with an even carbonation - not lively, but pleasant. There's also a slightl creaminess to the texture. A really solid domestic Schwarzbier. I would really like to see this added to the regular 22oz. bottle line-up. Well worth your time if you have the opportunity to give it a try and are a fan of the style.

Poured on-tap and served in a shaker pint, the beer is black, with brown highlights around the edges and a filmy surface coat of off-white head. Nose of light toasted grains, hints of smoke, and bitter coffee. Flavors of roast and subtle bitter notes forward, with a coffee backbone, mildly bitter once again. Ribbon of roast caramel throughout helps to balance the palate. Smooth, thin bodied, with a smoky and bitter aftertaste. Slightly dry, crisp finish. Not bad at all.

Out of a bottle this beer was a very dark brown/near black color with a short-lived, tan-colored head. The aroma was of toasted malt, slightly herbal hops and a bit of chocolate malt. The flavors were not-so-grand however, in my opinion. I tasted roasted and toasted malt, a light residual sweetness but a subdued hop presence which one would not expect out of a Schwarzbier. The hops had a certain green/herbal note in them that I didn't think particularly complimented the malts either. The mouthfeel was good, the body medium/light and the carbonation mild. Appropriate in form, but the flavor profile just didn't do it for me.

Eh. Appearance: Very thin tan head on top of a deep brown base. Head dissipates very quickly with no lacing. Smell: some hints of chocolate, coffee, but nothing that attacks the senses. Taste: burnt coffee, with some dark fruitiness.
Mouthfeel: Very thin, watery. Overall, a bland uninspiring American Stout.
