On draft at the brewery.

The beer has an amber body (go figure) with a small ringlet of beige head. Spotty lacing. Aromas of pale malt, apple, grain. Light earth notes and floral hops with a malty body. A touch of fruity sweetness. Light bodied, even a tad watery, and quaffable. At just over 4% abv, this is refreshing and drinkable, albeit uneventful for the palate.

Review from notes, sampled 7/28/2007 will riding across country.
Pours a deep reddish amber color with a smallish off white head that displays moderate retention. Smells of brown sugar, sweet malts and a hint of earthy spicy hops. Taste follows the nose fairly well and adds a hint of diacytl. Medium to thin body, moderate level of carbonation with a slick almost creamy mouthfeel. Middle of the road brown ale that while not offensive it was also nothing spectacular. This sure did go down easy inside in the air conditioning on a blistering 90+ degree day.

on tap at the brewpub - standard pint

appearance: typical amber body - bright caramel, light beige ring

smell: sweet malts, light biscuit, caramel, apple, grain

taste: certainly better than the IPA - but nothing to write home about...dry grainy malts, biscuit, caramel, apple, hay

mouthfeel: a little big for the style

drinkability: ok

Poured caramel to red with a 1" offwhite head. Some head retention & lacing

Smell: Nice sweet malty scents up front

Taste: Malty & slight biscuitty notes. Finishes slightly fruitty & with some hop bitterness

MF: Medium with good balance

This drank pretty easy on a warm May evening. I'd rank this 2nd of 4 beers I tried

A visit to Rapid City SD and a brewpub Firehouse Brewing Company claiming the “unfair advantage with the best food and brew in the Black Hills,” lets just say I had to go.

Although listed as an American style pale ale, Firehouse Red is much closer to an Red Ale than anything. Although APA’s can be all over the place, Firehouse Red came out with a fiery red color perfect for its name. The beer was clear with decent carbonation. There was an obvious nitro head to the beer (and confirmed with the waitress), which left a creamy head and smoothness to the beer. There was little smell with hints of a pale malt would be the closest thing to pick up.

Firehouse Red tasted a sweet frothy flavor that was primarily fizzy and smooth malt. I don’t have a lot of experiences with nitro beers, but for the style I wonder if left to ferment via carbonation would have been better. The frothiness overshadows the beer and limits the malt and hop flavors. There was a roasted feel to it and mixed with a rather light floral hop but no bitterness and very easy to drink.

Firehouse Red did not seem to be a bigger beer. Very easy to drink and the locals enjoyed it as well.

Serving type: nitro-tap
