I found this store to be a great local resource for home brewing. They stock a good variety of equipment, ingredient kits, and other raw materials (e.g., malt, hops, yeast). For newer home brewers in particular, these supplies provide a good number of options. In addition, the staff is very knowledgeable and readily provide assistance in selecting yeasts and hops to match with a particular beer style.

For more advanced techniques, the resources can get a bit pricey (it cost us over $90 to make an all-grain imperial pilsner), but the ala carte supplies are still a great resource to supplement any recipe with extra hops, yeasts, etc. as well as any basic equipment. Overall, I love being able to patronize a local establishment over a mail-order or internet business, especially one that provides friendly support for people that are interested in getting started with home brewing.

Rix Dobbs runs this outpost for Durham's homebrewers. The space is a converted workshop. He has packed quite a bit of inventory in there. He sells supplies for all range of brewers. He carries a nice selection of Wyeast in his refrigerator, He also has a selection of the basic hops. While he doesn't carry every hop variety or yeast strain, he does carry the most common. I think this is the best practice for a new shop, since with these two ingredients especially, freshness is everything. Still it's always the consumer's responsibility to be sure and check the freshness dates. His grain selection is good as well. Rather than selling preground grains, he offers use of his mill if you want it ground. Again, this is a good practice so that the brewer has ultimte control over when the grain is ground to ensure freshness. Rix is very helpful and enthusiastic about the hobby. If you're loking for brewing supplies in Durham, check out Durham Brewmaster.
