Left Coast bombers were on sale at my store, and being that Double IPA is my favorite style, I figured I'd give it a shot. I also got their single IPA which I'll review soon. This brewery claims to be one of the pioneers of the Double IPA style so I am pretty excited to try this "Hop Juice"!

A - Why is it that many West Coast brews tend to overflow the bottle once uncapped? Anyway, pours a hazy golden orange with a one finger foamy white head that persists. Decent lacing.

S - Fruity hops AND piney/earthy hops! Usually with an IPA you will get one or the other but you get both here. I smell a strong malty backbone to this one already.

T - Huge malty sweetness upfront that leads to the fruity hops and then the earthy hops. A fairly bitter aftertaste. I am unsure how it smells MUCH hoppier than it tastes. A little weak in the taste to be honest, the smell got me expecting much more. Solid biscuity balance to this. The alcohol taste is fairly present and undesirable. I would have preferred more hops in the taste. Misleading aroma! Pretty strong sweetness and overall HORRIBLY unbalanced. What a letdown.

M - Medium bodied but suffers from undercarbonation in my opinion. Seems a bit flat.

D - This tastes so much like alcohol that I wouldn't have more than a few in a sitting. I wouldn't have anymore than the bomber and that is only because I feel the need to finish it since it is open and undercarbonated and will undoubtedly be flat tomorrow.

Overall, pretty disappointing. For a "pioneer of the style" I expected more. Maybe I will like their IPA, but not if it is a watered down version of this. Great appearance and aroma, but the taste is a huge letdown and it needs to be more carbonated. I have come to expect more from West Coast big IPAs. At least it was only a few dollars on sale, and puts on quite a buzz! Maybe if they used a ridiculous amount of real HOPS instead of extract this would be much better.

Pours translucent dirty yellow with a decent amount if head.

Smells a bit "grainy" - the malts taking a forefront with some undertones floral in nature.

The taste also is chewy and bready, toffee notes on the sweet end. The alcohol adds a little burn to my taste, and the bitterness doesn't make a strong appearance, but has a pine-wood taste to me. To me this tastes like lightly-bittered wort.

My thoughts on this beer was that it has more malt character than bitterness. It's not overly sweet, but tends that way, and the grains are more involved in the taste than I am used to. I would like a little more hops bite.

Amber- brown-golden pour, dominant piny smell quite bitter with not much malt. The aftertaste is a bit pharmaceutical/chemical I'd buy it again, but it's not a first tier double for me. To b fair, I'd like to try it on tap for the purest assessment.

From a bottle into a tulip, pours a hazy amber, with very little head, but prodigious lacing.

Remarkably reserved, semisweet aroma. Herbal and earthy hops barely make themselves known. Possibly some Wonder bread in the background, though one must strain to detect any graininess.

It's an interesting sub-piney bitterness. No, wait, I've got it: it's cold sake!! Very bitter, and balance comes from a neutral (not sweet) graininess. Scratch that: as it warms, there's a serious candy sugar sweetness. Deep hop flavors dominate, spurred on by a sharp alcohol tang.

Medium-bodied, almost chewy. Well-carbonated, with a slippery alcohol warmth.

A very good double IPA, though not as malty as I like them. It supplies a nice sweetness, but it's missing something I look for in my favorite IIPA's. Can't quite put my finger on it. Nevertheless, I think I'll be buying one more 4-pk. (though none for the cellar).

Bottle poured into a dogfish Spiegelau glass.

Has a dark golden amber look upon first poor. Smell is definitely the best thing about this beer. Lots of floral hops and citrus, some pine. Taste is nothing special and lacks plenty. Not impressed at all.
