Had this on tap as a UK pink at Vivo in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. A lovely blood red brew with a strong scent of molasses and berry along with the obvious hop aroma. A bit thin in the mouth for an imperial IPA, but the impact from the 9.7% ABV really packs a punch. Overall, this was as satisfying as a beer can get in that area. However, it could have had a bit more going on. I found it to be more of a strong brew than anything. This is a great beer for getting buzzed, but as for wanting something that should come with the imperial levels of magic that doubles/imperials hold, this is a bit different.

Poured a medium golden amber that was mostly non-transparent but appeared to be totally filtered. Produced a large, froathy head that can be uncommon in the dIPA range as it approaches the 10% abv mark. The aromas have an ever so slight twang of citrus but they're all on the darker pinier side of the spectrum. Hints of malt. The tastes include those darker hop varieties but lack a bitter bite that a 9.7% dIPA prides itself in. A strong start but an ending that has me wanting more. A stronger conclusion to a great journey, perhaps. Or is the journey more important than the destination? I dunno. Eitherway, a decent IPA and very glad a great west coast BA'er sent it this way!

Cheers!

Appearance - mostly transparent orange, massive off white foamy head, massive retention and lacing

Smell - grassy with some sweet malt

Taste - big bitter grassy pine hops, definitely tastes like hop juice, some malt hidden in there, alcohol is mostly hidden but it's there

Mouthfeel - full body, very dry, warming

Overall - a very piney and grassy hop presence, very intense profile

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Color was honey. About two fingers of head. Cloudy white lacing that lasted throughout the pour. Nice, healthy white film on the sides.

What a great smell! Nice citrus hops with lemon seemingly leading the way. Maybe some grapefruit in there as well. Sweet floral notes. Altogether, just what I like in an IPA/DIPA smell.

Unfortunately the taste didn’t live up to the smell. Got light citrus hops up front, but then a crescendo of alcohol, giving way to a liquor taste at the end. Slightly bitter finish.

Medium body. Kind of a creamy slick texture. Average carbonation. Astringent finish. Slightly refreshing.

The look and smell started out so well, but the taste and feel just didn’t hack it. I could have easily have knocked the latter duo down a peg or two, but I guess I’m comfortable with the rating.
