Left Coast Brewery Ale Epeteios.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a CBS snifter. Served lightly chilled.

A) Black brew... Brown on the edges... Finger of tan head. Slowly settled to a thin collar.

S) Really nice aroma here. Quite distinct even at a cooler temp. Very rich and chocolatey. Light roast, barley, alcohol mingling nicely on the nose. The lightest of hop bitterness.

T) Not as enjoyable as the aroma. Where did that chocolate go??? Much more roast... Again there is light hop bitterness. Finishes dry with a little warmth.

M) Pretty much medium bodied with medium carbonation. A little chalky... As mentioned above, has a dry finish, that kind of lingers on the palate.

O) The aroma here got my hopes up, but really after that I found this beer to be just pretty good, not outstanding. Worth a try....

22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown/black with a medium creamy light tan head that goes to a thin film and leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is roasted grains, black licorice, fudgy chocolate and a little dark fruit.

The flavor is bitter charred roasted grain with some black licorice, chocolate and coffee. The mouthfeel is a little thin and watery.

Overall, an OK imperial stout. It's thin and dominated by charred roast and black licorice.

Bomber served cool into an imperial pint glass.

Very nearly black in color with good clarity on the pour. The head is a nice crema color but settles almost instantly.

Aroma is really pleasant. There is a lot of great roasty malts and a surprising hoppy quality. Chocolate and coffee come forward in a way that makes me crave the first sip.

Flavor is quite nice too - rich roasted malt body supports a well-hopped aroma/flavor to bring it into balance. There is a slight fruitiness to it which includes black cherries and something like a port wine quality.

Mouthfeel is full bodied and nicely carbonated. Alcohol is evident but it's definately not 'hot' in any way.

Overall a very solid imperial stout and that's considering a lot of tough competition. Well done.

Poured from a pint bottle and just about room temp. color is dark and poured with a overflow head, probably due to being a bit warm. has a dark brown head with lacing that drips back into the head with no lacing, keeps a small thin head throughout the drink. tastes rich with a small hint of tang in the mid....smooth finish and good. good drinking stout. leaves the mouth wanting more. for the price of 9 bucks a pint, very drinkable stout

Black, short/thin dark tan head. Chocoate nose; assertive with tones of light cherry and lots of whiskey. "Sweet" smell of alcohol is primary charcter of nose, and could be confused with "sweet" fruit or sweet malt. Not bad - just alcoholic. Vanilla tones under the alcohol.

Mouthfeel is thin in the sense that it's not creamy. There is a lot going on in the mouth. Light carbonation and a lot of whiskey "hot" and alcohol. Alcohol is really present in the mouth.

Flavors are disappointing to the extent that alcohol dominates; primarily alcohol with undertones of bitter black chocolate and roasted grain with vanilla. Would prefer the other way around.

Alcohol does not disipate with age to my knowlege; this will not get less alcoholic with age and likekly will not improve.

Flavor profile also has some bitter hop character in the finish but, again, you get the hop and then the bitter coffee only as undertones to the extreme presence of alcohol.

I love big alcoholic brews. This one is just too much with not enough to otherwise redeem it.

Review from 2/2011 notes. Poured into a Black Raven pint glass.Pours nearly black with a hint of dark tan head and speckling of foam on the glass. Nice dark malt, light coffee and strong chocolate aroma. Dark, roasted malt, bitter coffee and light chocolate, not very assertive, alcohol kick in the middle and a dark malt, bitter coffee finish. Medium bodied. A decent stout, but understated and unexceptional.

Review #400 beer shared with Alucard4

Look: Black with a 1/2 inch head and no real retention but settles to a thick collar

Smell: Licorice, chocolate and some alcohol

Taste: Quite heavy on the malt this beer is. Upfront mid palate and on the finish is just copious amounts malt you do pick up traces of chocolate and there is a heavy alcohol presence

Mouthfeel: Full body and low carbonation

Overall: Very interesting beer and kind of a one way street with the flavor profile. The alcohol does become a bit distracting I would say sit on this one for sometime but I don't really see the beer getting much better.

Appearance: Deep black in color, with a modest tan head, which retains fairly well, with thick, glass-coating lace.

Aroma: Bitter cocoa, cold coffee, charcoal, sweet alcohol, and moderate herbal hops.

Taste: Opens with coffee and bitter cocoa, soon after, sweet, warming alcohol appears. As the taste progresses, the coffee and cocoa ascend and the alcohol warms pleasantly. Finishes with a long, lingering bitter cocoa note and a bit of herbal hop bitterness.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, and very pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: Very nicely done, well-suited to cold winter days.

Presentation: Packaged in a twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Black colored ale with a tall brown colored head. Looks like used motor oil with a head.

Smell is patent malt and chocolate with a little smoke. Toasted grain and coffee scents. Little bit of carrot scent.

Starts out bittersweet. Strong coffee and bitterness. Chocolate and char there is some berry under all the roast but it is hard to find. Definitely on the out edge of using massive amounts of patent malt.

Mouthfeel is thick.

Overall it is just to strong on the patent malt to be that drinkable.

Somewhat disappointed here, but I think I may have got over-hyped for it. Just an adequate stout when I was expecting amazing. Everything is pretty standard up to the taste. Thin, subtle, watery, bitter which is not what you expect from an Imperial Stout. Does have some really good coffee flavor though, but also contributes to its bitterness. Mouthfeel is rather thin for the style, with a character more similar to a mild porter. Some alcohol warmth. Overall, not bad, not great. Don't be upset if someone buys one for you, but don't go out of your way to find one.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass, the beer is an opaque, jet-black coloring with a half inch of milk chocolate colored head that recedes to a film fairly quickly. I was actually surprised the head retention was so little the way it poured. Aromas are thick with dark chocolate, brown sugar, and booze. This is enticing. The flavor is dark roasted coffee first, which blends into chocolate, but retains the bitter throughout. Some nutty highlights, as well as brief appearances from the ABV characteristics. The beer is creamy and bold in mouth, with the slightest bit of sharpness at the end. Aftertaste is all bitter, dark roasted coffee with the slightest hint of the sweetness every here and there. The beer's finish lingers just enough to beg for a second sip. I'm not sure, but I would imagine this beer would age fairly well, and would be interested to see how it tasted after a year or two of cellaring.

This beer is labeled as retired, but we just got a new shipment at my store.

A- This was a deep black, with not much brown in this one. It poured thick.

S- Coffee, not much chocolate at all in the smell.

T- This was coffee all the way. It took awhile, or a few sips for the chocolate to come through. When it did. It went from Dark chocolate at the start, but it finished with a slight milk chocolate taste.

Not a bad imperial stout at all. Drinkable

A - 3.5 - Nice dark brown-black beer but with minimal tan head on it. Leaves sparse lacing.
S - 4.25 - Nice coffee, chocolate, roasted malt smell to it. IT actually does smell a lot like chocolate syrup or hot fudge. Some smooth oatmeal/malt in the background balances out the sweetness of the chocolate.
T - 3.75 - It's very smooth, with a nice chocolate, coffee and roasted malt taste, but it lacks a little bit of depth.
M - 3.75 - Medium mouthfeel, actually pretty thin bodied for an imperial stout. Alc covered completely. Aftertaste is again roasted coffee and chocolate.
O - 3.75 - It does exactly what it should do as an imperial stout. It's a little one dimensional and a little light bodied. For 6 bucks a bomber - it's a good deal, but I'd rather get Stone RIS or Barleywine (or Smoked Barleywine!)

Powerful black ale.

Really dark brown edge to the color. Looks quite nice in the chalice with foamy lacing swirling around which lasts through quite a long sipping session. Aroma is definitely alcohol with some hops. Tastes hot, too, and warms the gullet. Really quite pleasant for a high octane brew. Not a lot of rich complexity. A more austere flavor profile but great for a slow nightcap. Burnt malt is main flavor with some roasted flavors. Just not much sweetness, which is OK for the style. Hops seem just right to give an edge but are not overly bitter or obtrusive.

I don't think this is bad at all, and the price is certainly right, as others have noted. Apparently this was released in October 2010.

Picked this one up on a whim at the Total Beverage in Westminster, Colorado (I think?) 5 bucks or so for a bomber of imperial stout, so...Anyways, this one left me seriously disappointed. Not bad, really, but rather bland and uninspiring for the style. Black, roasted malt, black licorice, a little smoke, but mostly just bland.
