a real good black ipa here, with a very different rich dark grain take to it other than just the usual bitterness and chocolate roast malt. those are both there of course, but we have a third grain element here thats a little tough to place. its a candied sugar sort of flavor, but the beer isnt sweet in the slightest. it comes and goes in just a second, towards the finish, but its very distinct. toasted nuts to it too, very cool. the hops are simple, nothing too citrusy or experimental, its just straight forward robust resinous bitter hops that balance the grain well. slightly vegetal aroma to this dark brown brew. lacy head on it too, short but permanent, and it leaves big soapy rings as i drink it on down. not overly bitter, but the hops and barley do a little dance in the bitter department, that reminds me of other black india pales, particularly the bond street series one from deschutes. a little less fruity hops on this, and perhaps a bit more body and grain weight, but the two beers have some notable similarities. i may honestly prefer this one in some settings, but the label says winter seasonal, and to me this works well right now. it may have faded some too, giving it a more simplistic impression, but i like what i have here. better than other left coast beers ive consumed.

Had on draft at Lures on 4/14/14

A-Pours a very dark brown color with a smallish light brown head on it.

S-Nose is very roasty, with just some hints of some floral hops coming through underneath.

T-Taste is roastier than it is bitter, but there is a little bit of hoppy bitterness.

M-Medium body with light creamy mouthfeel

O-Overall a decent black ale would get again

Bomber to a pint glass, no dates

Pours black with dark red hues and a half finger of foam that's dissipated pretty quickly. Mild carbonation from the sides, lacing isn't too great lacing.

Smells of dark chocolate and coffee malts followed by hints of citrus hop notes and caramel. The smell on this is really subdued, even after letting it warm up I really have to stick my nose in it to get anything

Taste is balanced a bit more towards the malts- strong chocolate and espresso, followed by some earthy citrus hops. Just a bit of alcohol on the finish

Feel is a medium body, dry finish with medium bitterness. Alcohol is concealed well, it's pretty drinkable

Overall not too impressed with this one. Really subdued aroma and taste, I wonder if this bottle's a bit old?

Deep, dark, nearly opaque mahogany body with a thick, sticky head. Roasted grains, coffee, mild chocolate scents. Rich and dry flavors and body.

Another one of those beers that seems to be better than the sum of its parts. For sure, this beer already has some top-notch qualities with appearance, smell, taste, and feel, yet the combination of these transcends an already excellent brew. Robust and balanced throughout, with a nice malt and hop bitterness combination, this beer delivers a very satisfying drinking experience.
