look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Appearance: Deep obsidian in color, with a coarse tan head, which retains well, and thick, scattered lacing.

Aroma: Strong aroma of bitter chocolate, unsweetened cocoa, cold coffee, and roasted barley.

Taste: Opens with prominent roasted barley. Moderate grapefruit hops soon appear. As the taste progresses, some sweet, warming alcohol manifests itself, as well as bitter chocolate, and cold coffee. Finishes with a mild, lingering wave of citric hops.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, full, and very pleasant, with just a bit of stinging carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: Very nicely made, perhaps a touch biased to the roasted barley and citric hops. A little more emphasis on the chocolate and cold coffee flavors would be most welcome.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Poured a deep, rich black with a one-finger tan head that left slight lacing. It looks like a good American Stout. Scents of rich roast malt, roasted black coffee, dark chocolate and cocoa powder. An excellent, true to style aroma profile for an American Stout, but not standout. Flavor begins with rich roast malt, slight black coffee and some toffee sweetness. Moves into a more aggressive roasted malt flavor, more roasted black coffee and more toffee with some cocoa and dark chocolate and molasses in the background. Finish is of roasted black coffee, bitter roasted malt and bitter cocoa. A good, yet standard American Stout flavor profile. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied with light carbonation and a smooth feel. True to style, no complaints. Overall this is a good, very true to style American a Stout, not fantastic but still a good drinking beer with a nice aroma.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass.

Dark bodied walnut brown out of the bottle hitting, to create the same color in the glass. Not quite black as midnight but definitely getting close. Not much head produced and a very thin collar, with some light bubbled lacing when glass is tipped.

Good solid roasty and balanced nose. Hints of coffee and dry nuts. Almost like peanut butter, and a nice toasty quality of char. Very nice and impressive.

Cola like body on the feel, almost milk stout but without the lactose sweetness. Slightly milky coating of char and coffee, with a wet sheen in the palate. Lots of charcoal roast in the aftertaste, and mellow hop bitterness. Not much boozy character that's well hidden, but also a hint of fizzy cola senses to match.

While not rich and large like most stouts, quite flavorful even for a wet body. Nice fun beer.

Poured into a Stone Snifter.

Looks fairly blackish on the pour. Smell is of sweet roast barley, coffee, sweet cream and chocolate. Taste is basically the same as the nose, but a real milk stout feel going on. Very delicious and certainly will be bought again.

Note: Despite the 8.5% abv, I'm rating this beer as an "American Stout," not a double stout.

Deep, opaque black pour into a tulip. Very little head, mostly just rim bubbles which cling hard in spots on the glass.

The aroma is dominated by lightly sweetened, powdered cocoa in milk. A touch of capuccino in the background, with earthiness that's maybe a smoked moss.

Don't know how the industry distinguishes between imperial stouts and regular-Joe stouts in this abv range (8.5%). This drinks like a straight up stout, without any of the fumy booze of a double stout. I'm digging this. Roasty, malty. The sweetness also lacks the dark dried fruits of a double stout. Highly carbonated. Yet, still pretty creamy.

This is an accomplishment.

The color is rich and dark. The head is thick too but it dissolves quickly and the lacing is mediocre. It's smooth and light in the mouth with less coffee-bitterness in the actual flavor than the aroma. Wouldn't mind a stronger hint of malt or nuts. This is one that tastes better when fresh compared to others that even out their flavors after sitting a bit. I enjoy it and could make a night of it!

Poured a black body with minor head on top of an aroma that is thick of roasted malts, bordering on coffee at times, touch of dark chocolate. Simple, not complex stout, but pretty tasty and enjoyable. Chewey, slightly sticky body that is a little boozy and has some minor chocolate sweetness and a whole of roasted malts although not picking up a hint of coffee as I did in the aroma. Goes down nice with no problems and is a fine beer to have.
