Appearance: Poured nice and dark with a tan head which didn't stick around long.
Smell: Almost exactly like an old style chocolate malt! Seemed very sweet.
Taste: Follows the nose. Chocolate, malt, molasses, a touch of coffee and malt. Did I mention malt?
Mouthfeel: Medium body. Not viscous.

Overall: A solid example of the style, but not balanced IMO. Glad I tried it, wouldn't turn it down if it were offered, but would choose something else myself.

A: dark brown opaque, bordering on black, virtually no head, brown ring, leaves no lacing
S: chocolate, coffee, caramel
T: toasty, woody, coffee, chocolate, bitter
M: medium-thick, bordering on syrupy, bites the tongue, dryish finish
O: maybe a little too sweet for me as a stout, but that's a possible upside for others. Most of the sweetness quickly disappears in the finish, leaving toasted wood and coffee.

*12 oz. bottle* Ok, this is my first time of getting my hands wet with Left Coast Brewing. Lets see what we got. When poured this turned out to have a black body with a mocha lacing around my glass. When I popped this baby's cherry (cap). I could smell the aroma of German chocolate cake... mmm. After getting my head in to this I found highly roasted malts, with hints of coffee. German chocolate with a hint of mild pine oil. Interesting. After this beer made love to my sense of smell, now I want to plunge in and get a feel for her. The taste is bitter chocolate. Burnt malts follow yet not offensive. I pick up some cherry pit with hints of espresso. Slightly bitter finish leaves its mark on your taste buds. The feel on the palate is medium-light smooth body with a very tight and sharp carbonation.

Overall: This stout is pretty solid. Very decent roasted malt flavors with a nice touch of bitter chocolate. If complexity you're looking for.. this one is a little tamed, just to the point stout. The aroma for me is the highlight on this brew. I thought I was baking a German Chocolate Cake while brewing some morning coffee. This is very drinkable for being 8.5% abv. This one just doesn't scream excellence to me (IMO). This brew is worthy.

Appearance: Deep obsidian in color, with a coarse tan head, which retains well, and thick, scattered lacing.

Aroma: Strong aroma of bitter chocolate, unsweetened cocoa, cold coffee, and roasted barley.

Taste: Opens with prominent roasted barley. Moderate grapefruit hops soon appear. As the taste progresses, some sweet, warming alcohol manifests itself, as well as bitter chocolate, and cold coffee. Finishes with a mild, lingering wave of citric hops.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, full, and very pleasant, with just a bit of stinging carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: Very nicely made, perhaps a touch biased to the roasted barley and citric hops. A little more emphasis on the chocolate and cold coffee flavors would be most welcome.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.
