In the sea of touristy nonsense going on around Santa Monica's 3rd Street Promenade, Barney's stands out as different -- a pure sports bar that has decent food and a well-rounded tap list. While there are no hidden local gems on the draft list and it's certainly gone down in variety and quality overall during the past two years, still a safe haven for beer fans who may be hanging around the area for an afternoon or evening.
The food is decent pub fare (burgers, sandwiches, and their well-regarded chili), and the service is simply okay. It's a crowded spot during sporting events since (as mentioned) it's the area's lone, real sports bar. While it's not the top bar in Santa Monica, it'll do the trick in a pinch.

Have been here once before with my brother-in-law and went last night for "Bar Review" which is a weekly get together at my law school where we go to a different bar each week. The atmosphere was pretty good - lots of people (most law students, heh), but other individuals also. An odd place to be located on the 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica but nonetheless, better than you would expect for where it is located.
The quality is decent - however, it is a bit dirty to be honest and for being on such a high traffic area you'd think it would look a little bit better. It isn't horrible by any means, just not what I would have expected.
Service was also spotty. Took quite a while to get a drink, even when I was hanging over the bar making eye contact. Classic scenario where there were more guy bartenders than girls so the guy bartenders catered to the girls. Oh well. BTW, there was a kind of hot bartender there we nicknamed Missouri since she is from there.
The selection was decent for such a mainstream bar, however, they never have anything special on draft. Got an Arrogant Bastard, Racer 5, and then a PBR tallboy to finish the night out. Everytying is mostly BMC focused but again, if you're on the promenade and need a quick drink, go in. If not, take a 5 minute cab ride to Father's Office or the Library.
Didn't try any of the food, however, the specials that night (which I think were specific to the "Bar Review" since we had so many people come out from law school) was 3 dollar drafts (and cans). A nine dollar tab is not bad at ALL so I can't complain about that. Won't go here again unless I need a quick drink after being dragged shopping on 3rd street all day :D

Barney's seems out of place with the rest of the 3rd Street Promenade. While the promenade is full of higher end fashion stores, Barney's is an older looking sports restaurant and bar for sports fans and frat boys. I didn't care. In fact, I really dug the extra comfy bar seats and the 1970s propoganda covering the walls of the men's restroom. Having multiple sports channels in front of us at the bar also hit the spot for us too.
Yes, there's beer. Maybe 30-35 taps, with a mix of micros and macros, and a bottle list of around 100. The draft list contained Stone, Paulaner, Firestone, Delirium, Leffe, while the bottle list had some "geeky" options (Orval, Beer Geek Breakfast) to more ordinary crafts (Doggie Style Pale Ale, Coopers, Moa Noir, Anchor Porter), and yes, lots of macro offerings. They only offer chilled down "cheater pints" for most of the beers, but a Chimay chalice is offered for a few Belgian drafts. Still, the two beers I had (Paulaner Hefeweizen, Stone IPA) seemed less than fresh, but drinkable and still good enough.
Barney's claim to fame is their chili, and yes, it's quite good. My friend's calzone was okay; it's got calories, but my chili tasted better.
Barney's has food, beer, and sports, so it can work if you're that type of person. It was workable for me. Don't expect a mecca for craft beer culture, and remember to have fun while your here.

I stopped here today while shopping on the 3rd Street Promenade, walked in and saw Anchor Christmas 2008, also Chimay which is like nine or ten dollars a pint, and a few other decent beers on tap, the place was loud as can be and filled with college football fans, but what can you do it is a Saturday afternoon, place was big and had a lot of tables as well as a good amount of seats at the bar, place was pretty clean for a joint this crowded, service was decent for how busy they were, other beers on draft I noticed were Shiner Bock, Samuel Adams, Widmer Hefeweizen, Stone Pale Ale, Rogue Hazelnut Brown, Sierra Nevada, Pilsner Urquell, Red Hook, and a couple macros, I am guessing that there were thirty-five to forty beers total, selection was decent for where this is located, actually quite surprising and I would stop in again if I was in the mood for a beer while the girlfriend dragged me out shopping, worth checking out if you are in Santa Monica

Buying here by LA standards is a good thing. Great selection of mid-range micros and regionals. We were there for New Year's Eve while in LA for a vacation. It was the only time we got away from both kids, and after hitting a few of the more pretentious places on the west side, we found Barney's. This was not our first visit, but we enjoyed it all over again. The beer selection is great. I am from the heartland and not too laligned with the hopsuckler fancy, so some trended a little High on IBU's. My wife ordered a Firestone that turned out to be very hoppy and The staff gladly replaced it with another beer. Cheap place to spend a couple of hourse during the night left after 12 to go home to the kids, but very happy and quite lubricated all the same. This is a great "DIVE" beer bar with a great selection.

Barney's in santa monica is THE place to go if you're at the 3rd street promenade. the beer selection is decent. they have some karl strauss, gordon biersch, stone and a few other locals i think. mostly big name crafts like blue moon, shiner, new belgium etc. euro choices are a little slim. just the basics like guiness, new castle, bass but they do have chimay. now, i am ALWAYS looking for a good happy hour and this place has a nice one. $2.75 for domestic pints, $3.00 for imports. also pretty cheap well drinks for you liquor lovers. they also have half price on a few appetizers. mon-fri 4-7. check it out if you're in the area, don't make a special trip

While it isn't the largest beer selection in Los Angeles, it definitely is the largest menu. If you go to eat, its better to figure out what you want to eat and order it assuming they have it, than to try to figure out what you want by looking at the menu.
But onto the beer... They have a good selection of middle of the road beers with some exotic choices. Most of the beers on tap you can find at one of the other restaurants around the promenade area, but you can't find that many in one place.
The bottle list is long, but filled with a lot of bland lagers from around the world. They tend to run out of some of them at times and the wait staff is not very knowledgable when it comes to the beers. They can't generally describe any of the beers except for the ones that are the top 10 sellers.
It can get loud in there during football season, especially when they are hosting an alumni club. The outside patio can be a lot of fun for people watching on the promenade.
