This medium sized place is located across the street from the Long island RR stop of Bellmore. Its only about 10-15 minutes from here to the Jones beach concert venue, so this place made sense for a few pints before our concert. Respectable selection, especially for Long Island. Nothing amazing on tap or in bottles but a fair decent number of quality choices. Chimay, Duvel,Unibroue, Brookln, DFH, SNPA, Blue Point and a few others to give you an idea of what to generally expect. Hippie, semi-crunchy athmosphere and friendly beer dudes/owners doing the pouring. Worth a stop if in the area and looking for a decent BA worthy beer on that strange place known as Long island.

I seem to be always qualifying my reviews, but I suppose that has its place too.

Effin Gruven has been doing their thing for some time. For that they should be commended. They have been on their mission to sell good beer for longer than most.

My less than stellar numbers on the place are grounded more in it not being my cup tea, as it were. Perhaps Im getting old.

My one visit to Effin came on a Friday night, after having gone to another local place to see a friends band play. And let me say it was some time ago.

Having heard about their top notch selection, I stopped in with a few friends to see what it was all about. It was busy, but it's a decent sized place, so there was no issue with elbow room. TV's scattered about and a couple game tables.

The beer selection was solid and they had a pay one price deal on that night, but we arrived too late to make it worthwhile for us. I was put off a little by a couple of the tap selections, as knowing a bit about when certain beers are released, etc...there were a few beers on tap that were decidedly out of season and didn’t seem to be of a style that was good for aging. But we managed to find a couple excellent brews to suit our tastes.

The atmosphere just wasn’t my thing. The smell of incense was a bit much. And after being there for a very short time, it was clear that Effin’s identity is wrapped up in the kind of fashionable obnoxiousness and beer snobbery that I find objectionable.

The service was passable, but it was clear that we were perceived as the older folks, new to the place and probably not destined to become regulars. Staff’s attention was definitely more focused on others who were known to them, but the wait for a beer wasn’t too long.

End of the day, Effin just isn’t my style and that is how I reviewed it. Certainly opinions vary looking at other reviews and noting that they were busy that Friday night and have been around for some time. I did take a look online at the place before writing this, as it was some time ago that I went there. It doesn’t seem to have changed much though. They just announced a new menu of Fries and Pizzas (which look very good btw), but they offer it with the caveat that management reserves the right to add a 200% gratuity to all checks for patrons that they find annoying. To each their own. Im sure that management would be all too quick to make it known that they’ll be just fine without me around.

A: The space is a nice size, with a long, semi-wraparound bar taking up the length of the right hand side and several tables and booths off to the left. Its dark, there are TVs with multiple games on, an internet jukebox and a couple of retro table games (PacMan, foosball) in the back. Incense always burning, which can get annoying, but I find I get used to it pretty quickly. As was previously mentioned, the place does tend to get crowded on weekend nights around 9-930, but I have never felt "packed in" even on a New Year's Eve that was as crowded as I have ever seen the place.

SER: The bartenders have been excellent every time I have been here. Of the four or five I can think of (John and Drew are especially solid dudes), every one has always known his stuff, can give a recommendation or shoot the shit about beer and, in a practice that you would not expect to see in this type of bar, they buy back. Top notch service here.

SEL: The beer list gets a solid A. The tap rotation doesnt always sport the greatest selection, but the bottle list will get you through a visit during a rough spot. In addition, there is a decent wine menu and an extensive vodka, tequila and bourbon selection.

F: None, but they do not have a problem with you ordering from a local place and having it delivered.

Overall: My review of this place is long overdue. Upon moving to Bellmore in 2009, after being in Brooklyn the previous 29 years of my life, the wife and I set out to find a local place to satisfy our craft beer needs. This was the second bar we went to in Bellmore and it is the only one we ever return to. Since our son was born, we do not get a chance to hit the bars very much but when we do, this is where we go for the night or as a night cap after dinner. I have also brought my friends here on multiple occasions with no complaints.

Upon visiting Effin Gruven for the 2nd time, I noticed the arched ceiling that was painted with a surreal colors and the overall decor was very welcoming for lovers of beer with ample tables and chairs with offset lighting. The long bar was clearly the work of imagination as it wound its way to the rear of the building and the counter was dotted with candles between the tap towers.

The selection of beers on tap and bottle was clearly one of the better that I had seen in recent memory and the bartenders knew their product lines well enough to describe the tastes in a good way. I also noted the venue was making generous pours in the correct glassware for each beer served with close attention.

While the bar had quite a few taps and more than enough good choices to satisfy my constantly empty glassware, I noted that Effin Gruven didn't try to have everything the local beer wholesalers could possibly get in there. This act of restraint is uncommon as many places aspiring to be the king of "craft" beer places stuff their beer lineups with everything possible to the point that one should wonder how often the beer taps turnover with new beer.

The only minor issue with Effin is that it doesn't have a kitchen, but there are plenty of delivery services in area that are ready to solve this problem. the bartenders apparently have menus readily available or one can bring food in.

I look forward to returning to this place in the future with friends in tow as it's simply a great place to have a beer or three.

Effin Gruven sets itself apart from many of the typical bars on Long Island.

During my first visit there this past weekend, I found the atmosphere to be laidback and enjoyable, with most people talking excitedly about the beers they were trying.

The place is on the smaller side and gets very busy around 930, but if you get there a bit earlier than that it is perfect.

The beer selection was very impressive, with about 20 beers on tap and much more available by the bottle. Most of them were craft brews or microbrews, which was awesome. I was happy to see that many of the beers on tap were updated and seasonal versions, and they even provide a list of the ones that are soon to be added as tap beers.

The prices are moderate, with most pints coming in at $6 or $6.50

After living on long island for three years, I'm really sorry I hadn't found this place much sooner.

I will definitely be taking my friends back here to try more of the great beers!

p.s-this place gets extra credit points for having my hometown Keegan Ales Mother's Milk on tap!
