Name hasn't been Vigorosa for years, my evaluation done in 24mar13 was re-copied here. For some reason it was now under the Eisenbahn Weizenbier that I had evaluated back in May same year. I am glad I kept a copy...

Dark brown color with a timid head.
Pleasant mild aroma of sweat wheat and yeast.
Nice taste of slight toasted malts, caramels, dark fruits and amazingly refreshing hops. Dry and mild bitter aftertaste.
Light body with medium carbonation. Alcohol of 8% ABV is a master of disguise in this brew.
Good weizenbock, among the best of the beers produced by Eisenbahn. Good balance between drinkability and flavor.

Poured into a flute glass a hazy murky brown with a slight lemony yellow tinge a big blooming off white head that settles into a pillowy mass atop.Smokey clove and toasty malt in the nose with a hint of banana-like fruit,full near chewey mouthfeel but it still glides down very easily,starts out somewhat spicey and clovey with hints of smoke and brown sugar but its very light quite crisp and dry on the palate in the finish with a light banana flavor.This Brazilian brewery puts out some good stuff they know what they are doing this is another fine example.

Appearance – The beer here is a murky, dark brown with a modest, off-white head.

Smell – There is a mild sense of yeast and toasted malts but this nose is pretty dull.

Taste – I can kind of get the dunkles weizen flavor and a bit of poorly-made bock, but this beer has a funny tang to it that just doesn’t fit with the style and in fact is quite unpleasant. It’s like a dash of orange soda or something.

Mouthfeel – This is well shy of medium-bodied with cheap carbonation and a flat finish.

Sinkability – I don’t know what this is, but it’s not a wheat OR a bock.

Nice dark amber color with an off-white head that retains well. Smell is very rich of caramel, various spices, dark fruit, and some clove. Burnt sugar and dark caramel sweetness greet the tongue, followed by perfect amount of spiciness (not spicy as in chili spicy, mind you), with a lingering sweet caramel finish with just a touch of banana. Carbonation is on the higher side, but not overpowering, it's just the right amount. Body is full, chewy, but not cloying; no discernable alcohol coming through. Truly an exceptional beer, I'm glad I decided to try it. I will be buying more of this and will be trying some of their other products.

Received in the April shipment of my Beer of the Month club. Hopefully this is a better month than March. Seriously, what were they thinking?

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Frankfurt glass.

Appearance: Hazy chocolate brown with huge billowing head that eventually settled to 1/2 inch.

Smell: Banana, bubblegum, sweet dark fruit (plum?), slight noble hops and wheatiness.

Taste: Caramel and fruity malts, some banana and clove spiciness, light bitterness, somewhat grainy from the wheat. Semi-sweet wheat aftertaste.

Feel: Thick and chewy, more moderate carbonation than the pour suggested, slightly warming. There is also a slight chalky coating that it left in my month that detracts a little.

Drinkability: Easy to keep sipping all night long, and the alcohol is mostly hidden. The chalkiness is the only hindrance.

So far, this month's choices are looking better than last month's.

Appearance: dark brown with medium brown highlights, no head (probably from elevated ABV), murky from wheat malt

Aroma: definite banana and clove nose, but much greater malty sweetness on the nose than a weizen or even a dunkelweizen, dark fruit, hint of fig, very slight nutty character as well, pungent aroma overall, with some noticeable alcoholic strength in the nose

Taste: Banana and clove-like yeast character hits first but then is immersed in a dark fruity sweetness than lasts through the finish. There is an obvious wheat character to the taste, as well as weizen yeast, but otherwise it drinks just like a doppelbock. Dark, strong, and malty with no noticable hop character, it is lightened in flavor by the weizen yeast and smoothed by the wheat malt. No strong alcohol flavors.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and wheaty, slight graininess, moderate carbonation, full bodied with a long finish.

Overall Impression: A good malt bomb that has some interesting wheat and weizen yeast character to make it unique. Flavors of a doppelbock married to a weizen, this beer sports an 8.0% ABV that, to its credit, you feel but don't taste.

Appears a cloudy murky amber brown mahogany hue large tan head with big bubbles dwindles quickly from about an inch and a half down to just a collar of lacing which are left in uneven specks. Aroma contains tart raisins and spicy christmas bread a real yeast and bread dough characteristic mild cider vinegar tart flow going on as well the fruitiness is rather perfumey. Flavor wise the taste is a bit clouded with spices and it really dominates the effervesent green apple and raisin fruit esters dough powdered yeast sits heavy with light herbal hops this beer is not harmonious it's in battle of spice versuses the yeast almost seems like something of Belgian character rather than a German style weizenbock alcohol is pretty well hidden even as it warms. Mouthfeel is a bit chewy yet soft flowing the carbonation gives this medium to fuller bodied brew enough moving power to not sit on the palate completely but once again the yeast and spice characteristics sit heavy on the tongue in the finish in trainwreck fashion. Drinkability leaves more to be desired for me flavor components attempt to pull of cohesion but it lacks so much from the German predecessors that I'd rather get the original definitely complex and tasty but I'm weary of supporting the Shelton Brothers on a regular basis.

I picked this up at the Pizza Port Carlsbad bottle shop, mid-Dec 2007.

I am happy to see craft brews available from South America here in SoCal, hopefully a push forward.

Color is a deep brown, small but persistent head. Nutty aroma with plum and some banana. Only had one 12 oz bottle and it went quickly.

Pours a muddy, cloudy milk-chocolate/caramel body. Average size head with okay retention.

Immediate reaction upon smelling this Brazilian-born German style beer was...Belgium! But I'm sure that's just due to its unfiltered nature and the yeast that comes along with it. Aromas are fresh-baked bread, caramel, banana, Nestle Quik.

Huge banana in the flavor, with accompanying slippery and chewy mouthfeel. Also a lactic flavor, all milk chocolate-y and dessert-like. Bread-like earthiness, but it all revolves around the slick banana flavor and feel, which is delicious, but hard to get away from. It dominates.

Overall this is really good. But it's heavy, reallys sticks to the mouth and stomach; good thing it's a regular 12 oz. bottle. So the drinkability seems a bit limited. Looking forward to trying this brewer's other offerings, all sent by msubulldog.

Surprisingly quite decent unfiltered wheat. I am getting some roasted, very consistent and smooth chocolate, a bit of the banana and clove aroma and flavor.Smooth above average mnouthfeel and very quaffable. A good baskinandrobbins ice cream candy and not too sweet.

Pours a semi-hazed caramel/brown. No lacing or head retention

S: Loads of bubblegum & some apricot

T: Rich breadyness, a bit of juicy fruit gum & a touch of cloves up front. Dryness & a touch of booze & some appleskins & persimmons as this warms. Finishes fruitty & dry, a bit to dry, with a touch of cinnamon, leafy hops & loads of orchard fruits

MF: Chewy with low carbonation

Drinks pretty easy for the style & ABV, not a bad weizenbock at all

I pretty much effect when putting in tulip, gradually forming the fragrant foam; as my mother said, "until the foam leaves us dizzy." It is a true bock, but I'm not refined taste for it, dropping the cost-benefit to me. Thanks curiosity!

Sudbrack's Eisenbahn Vigorosa pours up neatly with a fine creamy whitish head that tops a slightly hazy copper-tawny brown body. The slightly spicy/phenolic (allspice, cloves, nutmeg) nose has a low-moderate fruitiness (apple, banana, pear) with some light bubblegum esters & chocolate-vanilla notes underlying the toasted bread graininess. The flavor starts off with a mild toffee/caramel character supported by a moderately toasty wheat bread graininess that's marked by just a touch of bitterness to balance the melanoidin sweetness. The underlying spiciness also helps to carry this one along to a mildly fruity, slightly yeasty, & warming finish. This medium bodied bottle-conditioned weizenbock has ample carbonation, but lacks some creaminess (fullness) & complexity. This weizenbock is a solid intepretation from South America's craft brewery and heavily influenced by tradition. Recommended pairings include Carpaccio with radicchio & parmesan, Chop suey, orange-glazed duck, Hungarian goulash, baked ham, grilled trout, beer braised sausages, or breaded veal. Here's to Gemütlichkeit & the Reinheitsgebot which are obviously alive & well in Brazil.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle to a steamed glass the liquid is a cloudy dark brown with good carbonation. The head is medium, tan and leave some lace.

The smell is quite good an interesting zing of fresh peppery dark fruit with a touch of flowery rose peddles.

The taste is quite complex, dark fruit is quite zesty, some fresh baked dark rye or pumpernickel with pepper and some Herbes de Provence. Really outstanding Augusteiner himself would be quite impressed.

The mouthfeel is good nice body and good carbonation.

The drinkability of this brew is really quite outstanding in by book.

Pours a dark red with a very short, thin white head.

Banana bread/pineapple nose with underlying candy sugar and malt and a nose finish of bubblegum. Pleasant and undertones of toffee and carmel in the nose.

Medium light body of banana and malt. A bit thin in the mouth and short in character and finish. Hints of "sweet" malt and banana is primary character with light carbonation.

Short sweet malt finish.

Pleasant but nothing special.

Pours a hazy ruby-mahogany with a surprisingly small head for a weizenbier. The dissipates into a film; not much lacing.

Smells of sweet crystal malts and wheat, along with banana and date esters. The taste is quite similar, with dark roasted malt coming through strongly, as well as some very bready yeast notes. The esters are lighter, though cherries also come through.

Overall, a very nice, well balanced beer. It's no Vitus, but not bad at all.

Pours out a murk suede with a strong, billowing, off-white head. Has a candy sweet nose with ample chocolate and bananas and a nice clove undertone. Mild alcohol comes out. The sweetness and alcohol become a bit much in the flavor (although the alcohol isn't exactly overpowering, it's more than I'd like). The yeasty complexities are there but in the shadows of the overwhelming dark malts. Almost has an artificial sweetener flavor to it. Mouthfeel is just a tad stick, but the carbonation is wonderfully smooth. I'd reserve this as a dessert beverage.

A: Pours a cloudy chestnut hue with a decent offwhite head, though it dissipated somewhat quickly for a wheat beer.

S: Wow, that's quite the aroma. We're talking beyond malty... it's like every kind of sugar mixed together, plus a little lemon too. I'm also picking up a hint of banana, but none of the phenols I would expect from a Weizen.

T: This is a very sweet beer, though it's more crystal malt sweetness (think brown sugar) than Munich malt sweetness (think sweet bread). Hardly any clove or banana. Hops are virtually non-existent, with an alcoholic dryness keeping the beer from being intolerably sweet.

M: While I would expect a heavy, thick mouthfeel, this beer is actually rather thin and alcoholic.

D: The thinness makes this rather drinkable for an 8% beer.

Overall: This isn't a bad beer, but certainly isn't what I would like in a Weizenbock. It's rather one-dimensional and thin. I don't want to come off as a style Nazi, but I expect more bready complexity and stone fruit, and more esters and phenols, from a Weizenbock.

12oz. bottle, poured into a 0.5L Weizen glass. Tan foam creeps up past the half-liter mark, slowly settles in a few minutes. Body is an unfiltered, cloudy auburn.

Vigorosa doesn't have a pronounced aroma. Some light cloviness, esters, & mild whiff of alcohol, however not harsh or offensive.

Clove, almond, and rum are the notes that come out in the taste. ABV is there, again not harsh, but the presence is felt.

Mouthfeel is smooth, not as rich as Aventinus or Mahr's, but very pleasing and drinkable. Overall a solid Weizenbock.

I hastily poured this without getting all any of the sediment, so I will have to do a follow up with the yum-yum's.

It's dark, with ruby highlights throughout the edges. Off white head, and no lacing really.

Smells spicy sweet. Rich in malts with a bit of caramel sweetness.

Taste is similar, yet there is definitely a little alcohol kick in the finish. I don't see a whole lot of the wheat in this...the dopplebock characteristics may over power that naturally.

Light-medium body, easy on the carbonation and smooth on the finish.

This is a not too, yet not under complex brew that can be enjoyed over and over.

This is a Brazilian beer, but brewed in one of the most heavily German influenced states, it carries so much of the
German style of beer, as you can plainly notice in the name and city it's brewed. Culture done well; on both sides of the playing field.

12 oz. bottle, 8% ABV, batch 03. Pours a cloudy mahogany color. Thin tan head disappears immediately. Not too bad looking.

Lots of fruit, particularly banana up front. Hints of chocolate and caramel. A bit vinous with a hint of oxidation, adding a bit of complexity.

A bit of caramel and chocolate flavor at first. A bit of tartness from the wheat comes in next. Lots of ripe fruit, with just a hint of earthy bitterness. Some warming from the alcohol. Nice caramel, banana finish.

Medium body, carbonation seems a bit low for the style. Pretty nice and enjoyable.

Reddish-Dark brown with a good head (could be better), hazy as expected for a non-filtered beer. Eisenbahn should also improve the quality of their bottles and labels, in my opinion.
Rather malty than fruity. Good balance, toasted, caramel, spicy (cloves), and esters (banana, apple). Low bitterness, as expected for the style. Good mouthfeel and drinkability.

This beer poured a hazy brown with a decent cream colored head. The aroma is earthy, fruity and grainy. The taste is earthy, sweet and malty - slight banana flavor as well. The mouthfeel is medium and seems well suited. Overall, this is a pleasant surprise which I'd recommend.

Presentation: 12oz bottle (Batch #10) in a classic Weizen glass

Poured smoothly and with a faint crackle. Nice esters up front, yeasty, rocky malts, spicy (clove), overripe fruits. As it warms the malts grow in resonance and tannins & leather emerge. Head was a great 3 fingers of mixed almond hued foam that settled to a 1/8" covering of the same with some faint edge lacing at first, then nothing. A murky, hazed, copper stained tea resides below the head, a very striking color with some light bubble activity.

Mmm..nice. The clove spiciness associated with the genre is upfront & kickin' albeit softly (if clove & faint black pepper can be soft) over a creamy, smooth caramelized malt tongue painting. A nice yeasty quality is present as well as some raisin sweetness. Its crisp, dry, lightly crunchy, which is accentuated by the slowly rising warmth from the ABV. I can tell right now this would be killer with a spicy steak or any fired up red meat. Some classic ripe banana semi-sweetness is now noticeable as it blooms & warms.

It grows thicker, more compacted as a whole on the palate as the alcohol begins a slow burn over an increasing sharpened & dry spiciness. The malts are really beginning to shine more & more, almost like drinking 2 different beers! When cooler its much more in the Weizen style, but as it warms its almost more Belgian Strong Dark Ale....wild! This is quite an experience! It finishes bittersweet with burnt caramel and echoed spices, leaving a nice, thick, chewy aftertaste.

Well, I am impressed. It was a good, but not great, Weizen until that gear shift into what my tastebuds said was almost an entirely different beer. It most definitely does NOT finish wimpy or weak, and actually appears to morph. I will have to try another that is more room temp to see what its like from the start that way. Another excellent beer from Eisenbahn, and definitely recommended. Now where's that pepper crusted steak at?
