This is a style I am warming up to a bit and I have read and heard some really good stuff about this Brazilian brewer so it was a no brainer for me to pick this up today.Poured into a .5 liter stein a deep rich amber with a swirling tight 1 one finger off white head very nice clarity to the pour, the smoke is prominent but there is a big brown sugar and taostiness to compliment the hardwood smoke.Starts off sweet before the smoke cuts thru it a nice mix of brown sugar sweetness and smoke like a brown sugar cured smoked ham.A very well made rauchbier better than alot of Bamburg ones I have had Eisenbahn impresses in my first encounter with them.

Thank you to Todd the beer guy at McKean and Charles in Waldoboro for getting me to try this. I never would have tried it without his suggestion, and then I would have really missed out. This is a great, almost phenomenal, beer. A 12oz bottle, Batch 06, poured into a pint glass. Dark amber color, small head. Faint campfire smoke aroma, with a some fruit. Very pleasant. Fruit, malt taste, with the faint smoke flavor coming in afterwards. Very subtle, very comfortable. Truly a beer to enjoy. I need to see if Tully's carries this, because I don't get up to Waldoboro that often.

Thanks to my brother for sharing this beer. Always excited to try new smoke beers.

Batch 04.

The beer pours an amber color with an off-white head. The aroma is very nice. I get a lot of toffee malt with some smoke mixed in. The smoke is present, but far from overwhelming.

The flavor is very similar. The first and main flavor that I get is a meaty smoke, but there is also a strong caramel and toffee malt backbone. As the beer warms I start to get some dark fruit notes that mix very well with the other components. Very easy to drink.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Appears a ruby amber tone nice velvety light tan head dwindles slowly leaves behind fine even lacing looking good. Smelling even better smoked rauchbier at it's finest smoked meats and peated malt accents burnt wood with sweet fruit malt undertones not getting much hops but that's okay I never have from a true rauchbier. Flavors like camp fire roasted caramel covered nuts, and smoked meats combine to form a slight woody flavor with enough malts coming through to really forms a tasty balanced smoked lager. A touch of alcohol and sweet ripened plums combine but the lingering smokiness is killer really great brew. Texture wise I get fine even carbonation even a bit bubbly medium bodied ale with lingering presence on the palate due to the dry smokiness. Drinkability is nice I could see myself indulging on a couple bottles of this stuff smoked beer grows on you especially after a couple in a session this would be addictive for me especially with some assorted meats and cheeses.

Bottle labeled Defumada with a freight train on the front purchased from Green's on Ponce in Atlanta.

Pours a clear copper color with a one-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of smoked malts with a good amount of underlying sweetness. As the beer warms the smoked malt aromas increase.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Smoked malt flavors up front with an underlying sweetness that carries through to a mildly sweet ending with a lingering smokiness.

Mouthfeel is good. It has a solid thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing the bottle and I could have a few more.

Overall this was a pretty good rauchbier. The flavors certainly improve as the beer warms so be sure to let this one get to a good temperature. Worth a shot.

12 oz bottle poured into tulip glass

A: Very nice dark caramel color with ruby accents, but also a lot of visible sediment. I'd be more put off by that if the color wasn't as attractive as it is. Head disappears quickly, leaving a thin cream-colored ring around the brew.

S: First things first, the smokiness of this beer emerged as soon as I started pouring, which is a great sign for me and my terrible sense of smell. On closer inspection, I smell the expected smoke - like in your peatier single-malts - but also pungent hops. Smells almost like a smoked double IPA.

T: tastes like it smells, really - smoky at first, but then the bitterness kicks in...but then there's that peaty smoke again. The only thing I don't like is that the smoke makes the character of the hops hard to pick up, past the general bitterness.

M: good. Effervescent to start, and once the smoke comes out in the taste, it coats my tongue and top of my mouth very well.

D: it's rauchbier, so I'm not drinking one of these every day - or two in a sitting - but for all that it's pretty smooth going down. I think the conditioning aids the drinkability a lot: this beer's crisp enough to refresh the palate from sip to sip.

O: I bought this in a mix-a-six because my daughter liked the picture of the train on the label. Glad she did. I didn't pay attention to the cost of the bottle or of a six-pack, so I don't know if it was worth what I spent, but I think so. I think this is going to be the Thanksgiving-dinner six-pack this year.

(Served in an American pint glass)
Batch #06
A- This beer has a crystal clear red body with a dirty white head that has a slight yellowish hint. The head last a good bit and is supported by strands of micro bubbles trailing to the surface.

S- This beer has a light tart smoke note with a smooth pale malt smell and toasted malt hint.

T- This beer has a smooth creamy caramel malt note with a light pale malt flavor that is enhanced by a alder smoke flavor. The finish has a flavor that can only be described as zippy with a hint of band-aid that is quite pleasant.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a tight fizz in the finish that gives that zippy taste to the smoke. There is soft alcohol hint on the exhale after each sip but it is very light.

D- This beer has some nice malt flavors but the smoke is a bit odd. That being said most breweries can’t get the smoke correct for stouts and porters so I’m very impressed that they attempted a lager with smoke. They really made a smoked lager better than I could ever expect.

Mine's called 'Defumada' Smoked Lager, with a depiction of an old train engine barreling through a tropical jungle. Oddly enough, it's also called 'Malt Liquor' on the label...

This beer pours a hazy, cloudy dark amber colour, with one finger of fast-disappearing soapy beige head, which leaves some very sparse lace in its wake. Its smells of light smoked wood, grainy malt, deli scraps, and mild grassy hops. The taste is smoked, woody grain, a bit of caramel, savory charred flesh, and floral, weedy, practically refreshing, hops. The carbonation is quite sedate, the body medium-heavy in weight, and smooth, in that campfire-tinged mountain air kind of way. It finishes with still a fair bit going on - caramel sweetness, latent meaty smoke, and light, ethereal, meadowy hops.

A nice, solid, surprisingly clean offering, with more of a tendency towards a visceral, subtle meatiness, than sinus (or palate) searing smoke.

Bottle into an American shaker pint.

A--Pours up a deep copper body with a creamy fairly dense white head that bubbles away after some time and laces well. Looks like a vienna lager--dark brownish red.

S--The smoke is as much wood as it is slim jim. There's a decent beef jerky here but there's also some peaty notes as well as considerable caramelish malt. Smoke is nowhere near overpowering in either sense.

T--Less like standing over a barbecuing Boston butt than like sipping on a decent Marzen that had some drops of liquid smoke in it. Flavor profile is actually pretty malt forward, which puts the smoke into the rear guard. Still, some spicy barbecue type flavors sneak into the back end while the more woody or peaty flavors contribute up front. Very restrained version of the style.

M&D--Both are fine, with higher marks to drinkability just because the subtlety of the smoke doesn't overpower your palate. Better for a more offbeat session than for something that's gonna knock your socks off with novelty--for those expecting a sock of smoke you'll be disappointed, and probably even bored. Could have been more flavorful for the ABV.

As someone who nearly vomited upon first tasting a Rauchbier, I am quite happy I eventually got over all that.

Pours an off-white head that sizzles and settles on top of a ruby-tinted amber/copper brown. A little lace is left in the liquid's wake.

Aroma is, unsurprisingly, dominated by smoke. Has a mesquite charcoal smokiness. Makes me think of glowing coals and BBQ. The smokiness veils any other aromas that might've tried to penetrate.

Oh wow. Flavor-wise this is one of the best smoked beers I've ever had, in any category. The depth of flavor is immense, revolving around a complex smokiness that indicates the brewer didn't use just any old crappy wood when smoking the malt. Woody, earthy, dense, hazy, rich, round...the smoke dominates, but there's an apple-ish layer coming through, giving the right amount of light, sweet balance to an otherwise hearty, heavy brew. Superb flavor. I mean: SUPERB.

As awesome as the flavor is, this is more demanding and left-of-center than your everyday beer, hurting the drinkability somewhat. But it still this comes highly recommended.

Hooked up with this beer thanks to msubulldog25. Much respect flyin' out to B to tha G.

South America's craft brewery.

Pours an interesting red amber color with ok white head. Nose is slight smoke and good pilsnery malt. Taste follows with rich lager, almost schwarzbier taste, some roast and noticeable smoke flavor. A good crisp finish. Adequate carbonation in the mouthfeel, and pretty good drinkability. An interesting style done fairly well. I love rauchbier, but I'm not sure I like it in a lager form. It would be good for an introduction to the style for those unfamiliar. It is good, but it is nothing particularly special or flavorful. Good beer, just not amazing.

Quite a tasty and satisfying smoke, with the medium lager mouthfeel backdropping the right amount of smoked malt flavour, with some long finish and some complexity. Sweetish but not too sweet. Drinkable this one. Tiny white head but appropriate though significant carbonation.

Defumada. 6.5% - different label (this one is in color - but still features a steam locomotive passing through what appears to be a rain forest). Batch 04. Poured from a 12oz bottle into my pilsner glass.

Brilliantly clear rust colored liquid with heavy carbonation building up a three finger, dense, dark beige head. Small curls of lacing adorn the edges of the glass.

Light smoke, but strong clean malt aromatics. Very distinctly German ingredients.

Distinctive buckwheat soba noodle (!) on the palate - incredibly appetizing though a bit surprising. Very slight bacon and butter notes, with a clean mouth-watering finish.

Fairly light bodied with very high carbonation.

This is an excellent lager.

The Eisenbahn Rauchbier was available a Figiera Restaurant in Sao Paulo. I tried this beer after the Pale Ale. The Rauch or smoke beer was ok. The appearance was a rich clear amber and a decent white head was present. The scent was somewhat smokey, but not dominate. The taste was decent, malt and grain present with tinges of roast/smoke. The mouthfeel was slightly downgraded because Alcohol was definitely present. Overall a decent beer and worth a try.

Review based on notes

Pours orange/caramel with 2 fingers of tan head. A bit of lacing & head retention

S: Caramel & oak smoke

T: Caramel, a bit of breadyness & light smokeyness up front. Some toffee & slightly heavier smokeyness (more like alder or oak ) as this warms. Finishes a bit too sweet, with smokeyness, a touch of grainy booze

MF: Medium bodied, with a hint of stickyness, pretty good balance & moderate carbonation

Drinks alright, more malt depth would help. A nice starter Rauch

I do not know if this proposal is even, but found no body, and so the smoky, artificial; I'd rather be wrong. Foam almost absent and elusive, the smoked only felt in the aftertaste.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a caramel color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, some malts. Taste is good, malts and smokes meat, some notes of hops. Feels light in the mouth and has average drinkability. Overall a pretty interesting and not bad beer.

Label reads "Defumada" Smoked Lager...
Different label, imported by Shelton Bros.

A sheen of tiny micro-bubbles cling to the sides of the glass, plenty of foam atop the reddish amber liquid.

Smell is lightly smoked malt, not overpowering. Reminds me a little of Spezial Rauchbier Lager. Slight grain husk sweetness.

Taste is very smooth, light smoke upfront, nutty almond, woody dry aftertaste. Some residual bitterness, but doesn't hinder it's mouthfeel or drinkability.

Overall, a better session candidate than bigger Rauchbiers like Schlenkerla, Spezial, and Rauchenfelser. Very clean and inviting.

I am a fan of smoked beer and this Brazilian entrant did not disappoint.

Poured a nice brown color with a good quality head which dissipated rather quickly.

Very easy drinking.... Crisp clean and fresh. Not as smoky as some of the beers imported from Bamburg but a good deal of smoke flavor especially on the back end. I likely the fact that this was a bit more heavy on the malt. Overall a interesting take on my favorite style.

Quite a refreshing beer on a hot day.

Found this 12oz brown bottle at Binny's in Glen Ellyn, IL. but my label is completely different from the one shown above in the BA picture. Mine has a picture of a freight train engine on it with the words Defumada smoked lager on the front instead of the German word rauchbier.

The beer pours a clear caramel color that left a 2 finger tan head that dissipated in less than 30 seconds and left no lacing. This is the clearest dark beer I've ever seen. You can look right thru the glass and see things on the other side.

The smell is an interesting mix of heavy malt and smoked deli meats. It's unlike any other beer smell.

Very sweet caramel taste. In fact the caramel is more pronounced than the smoke flavor. Some burnt malt is in there as well. The finish has a nice touch of spicy alcohol flavor to it.

The mouthfeel is surprisingly weak and watery. How they put all those flavors in there and still made it so light I don't know, but this was the most disappointing part of the beer. The carbonation is low to medium, which is OK for this style, but I wish it was thicker or chewier.

Don't know if anyone would want to polish off a full 6 of these all in one sitting, but I sure wouldn't mind another one.
