I do not know if this proposal is even, but found no body, and so the smoky, artificial; I'd rather be wrong. Foam almost absent and elusive, the smoked only felt in the aftertaste.

Pours a bronze colour, quite clear with minimal head, sinks to a thin ring of off-white bubbles. Leaves some unimpressive lace. Hmmmm... not very impressed, a bit blah.

Nose is quite amber-malty with some dark characters as well and hints of currants and cherry, then emerges this slight dark wood smoke, a lot of smouldered oaky notes, with a hint of cola lurking behind. Slightly subdued smoke-wise, but not bad, has a bit too much sweetness though.

Taste is sadly a let-down, very malty and sweet with brown sugar and some weak citric notes, then gets a slight smokey flavour at the back but dominated by a medicinal overtone and the smoke comes through as more of an afterthought. It may well just be diminished from being old though, it does retain a shadow of its woody, smokey past but it's a pale imitation of what it could be and what other Rauchs are.

Thin and untextured mostly, a bit syrupy as it goes down, actually quite unpleasant texture.

Fairly unimpressed with this but will happily give this a second chance with a fresh bottle if anyone from Oz wants to import another batch.

as much as like this brewery, I didn't really like this specific beer. It's quite strong, and the alcohol content isn't that high, but isn't well hidden.

It forms a nice head, that lasts for a decent amount of time, and the color is nice, redish/ambar. I could really taste the smoked malt, and I didn't really like it.

Not a bad beer, it just doesn't fit my personal taste.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a caramel color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, some malts. Taste is good, malts and smokes meat, some notes of hops. Feels light in the mouth and has average drinkability. Overall a pretty interesting and not bad beer.

Nearly no head initially, what little there is is gone within five minutes. Limited lace. Attractive color, burnt orange; very clear.

Not much of a smoky aroma, but there is a lot crystal malt smells--slightly sweet.

The sweetness shows up in the initial sip. Far more malty than hoppy, very little smoke flavors, which for me is a good thing, but not really true to style. This beer has a full body as would be expected in a slightly sweet beer. The carbonation is low.

If blindfolded, I believe I'd most closely compare it to a Scotch Ale in flavor. It is a subtly smoky beer which might make it a good introduction to the style.

The Eisenbahn Rauchbier was available a Figiera Restaurant in Sao Paulo. I tried this beer after the Pale Ale. The Rauch or smoke beer was ok. The appearance was a rich clear amber and a decent white head was present. The scent was somewhat smokey, but not dominate. The taste was decent, malt and grain present with tinges of roast/smoke. The mouthfeel was slightly downgraded because Alcohol was definitely present. Overall a decent beer and worth a try.

Sold to me as the Defumada. Slogan says that this joint is "South America's Craft Brewery," and man it must suck to live in a whole continent with only one craft brewery. I thought North Dakota was bad, but this is just crazy.

Pours light brown with a decent sized white head.

Smells meaty, salami and colby jack, with more generic wooden smoke and some malt that might be just a little stale. Says its from Batch 06, whatever that means. No freshness date = safe to review.

Tastes a lot more together, even if it's a little old. The malt is fruity and aged, but that actually works to tie together the nice smoke complexities. We got your meats, your cheeses, and your earthen grains yearning to breathe free. Solid smoke.

Well brewed. If I could be guaranteed to get ahold of this fresh, I'd love to try some more from this brewer.

This beer pours a murky ruby color. The head is one inch in height, and recedes slowly into nice lacing. The aroma is of caramel, and toffee malt with a smoke undercurrent. The taste is a bit smokier than the aroma, and there is still a solid malt presence. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a lot of carbonation which seems to slightly get in the way of the taste. Overall, this is a decent rauchbier that I could drink again, but there are better examples out to be had.

Amber red color with a two finger fluffy head with short retention.
Light predominant aroma of smoked malts and biscuit.
Flavor of smoked malts, red apples, caramel and a hint of pine. Dry aftertaste.
Light body with medium carbonation. Alcohol of 6.5% abv is well hidden.
A sessionable Rauchbier, maybe worth it as an entrance for beginners, but far from the usual smoked intense for the style.

What they heck do I call this one? I picked this up in the store because well, it looked interesting and what the heck right. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 12/02/2008.

The pour had me scared, lifeless, flat and dull. Amber in color with no head or any visible carbonation. Not sure what to make of this one here, but I am hoping that going forward it will improve a bit, but we shall see.

The aroma was smoked to high heaven, but rather one sided, some touches of a cough syrup like smell coming off it as it warmed, not sure what that was, but hints of grain buried underneath as well. The flavor was surprisingly good though. Rich notes here of peat and malted grains, nice roasted touches and a very nice and well balanced grain bill. Definitely a very nice flavor and it took me off guard, the feel was a bit thin and one sided, but still not terrible.

Overall I would not get it again, but it was interesting. Whatever style you want to call it, it was interesting.

Pours a clear amber colour, looking rather flat and limp, with a mildly filmy, fine-bubbled white head. Some lacing in nice curtains as the glass empties.

Light sweetness on the nose, with a very subdued but definitely noticeable smoke character. Very much merely a slight woodsmoke note; none of the big smoked meat characters. Even a little pine resin creeping in. Not bad though.

I do like the fact that there is a very noticeable smoky character on the palate. Round enough on the front, and not very full-bodied, which is rather suitable, before a smoky-sweet flavour permeates and stays till the end. It's again rather muted, but I love the effective smoke here.

Mouthfeel is thin, which again, is perhaps suited to the style, but it feels a little disappointing.

Gets slightly cloying after a while, with the sweetness raising its head once too often. It doesn't strike me as a particularly good rauch, but it has its moments.

IMPORTANT: The following review is for cold to cooler beer. Upon drinking it fully, and the beer had a chance to warm up, the beer became much much much...better. At least an A-. Make sure the beer is close to room temp. before all of the goodness shows up.

First beer from Brazil....can't wait to try. Found this at a hole in the wall store in the Twin Cities. Saw that it was a Rauchbier and had to pick a few up.

A - Average to Good. Burnt Carmel look. Dark Orange to Brown color. Small head which disappears quickly. No lacing present after head leaves.

S - Really not much there. Therefore, an average rating. I was expecting more of a smoke smell.

T - Good. Can taste the smoke wood flavor. I bet it would go great with brats...beer brats that is. However, hard to come by so I think I will just drink my two instead of making brats. Maybe next time I go to the cities, I will have to pick up some for cooking. I just wish there was more smoke flavor. I want campfire. Northern woods of Minnesota feel. Just isn't there for this beer. Very good tasting but light on the smoke flavor. Highly likeable though in its own sense. Much rather drink a Three Feet Deep for a rustic beer but that's just me.

M - Thin but crisp. I like the feel. Not heavy at all. Refreshing. Low carbonation which is nice.

D - At 6.5% alcohol, not a session beer. Also, hard to locate. Therefore, lower marks for this one here.

Overall, impressed with my first Brazilian beer. Will I search this one out....probably not since it is $2.50 per bottle before taxes and I can have a Three Feet Down for much less than that. However, great experience. If you have the chance, I say try one...I have 2 that I am going to enjoy.

12 oz twist off "Defumada" bottle.

Pours a red amber with a 1 centimeter white head that dissipates rather quickly.

The smoke scent is incredibly subtle with dark malts in the forefront.

The taste is rauchbier mixed with doppelbock and it works really well. It has hints of chocolate, coffee, and smoke. All of it is well balanced.

It is a pretty good rauchbier.

Appearance: Hazy amber-brown, ok head.

Smell: Smoky meats, not too strong.

Taste: Moderate smoked meat flavor backed with bready malt base.

Drinkability: I could have a few of these since the smoke is not overpowering.

A single I picked up since I liked the weizenbock I tried from this brewery and smoked beers are interesting. This is a pretty decent smoked beer/rauch. Not overpowering in the smokiness, but gives a nice smoked sausage flavor. Worth a shot.

Picked up a single bottle at Nikki's Liquors in RI. Poured into my nonic pint glass a clear golden amber color with a quickly vanishing off-white head. Smells mildly of smoked malts and burnt caramel with a unique taffy like sweetness. Tastes of sweet, brown sugar coated smoked ribs. The smoke is mild and not overpowering. A bit thin in body with medium carbonation. It did not take long for my glass to become empty. Worth a try if you see it.

Review based on notes

Pours orange/caramel with 2 fingers of tan head. A bit of lacing & head retention

S: Caramel & oak smoke

T: Caramel, a bit of breadyness & light smokeyness up front. Some toffee & slightly heavier smokeyness (more like alder or oak ) as this warms. Finishes a bit too sweet, with smokeyness, a touch of grainy booze

MF: Medium bodied, with a hint of stickyness, pretty good balance & moderate carbonation

Drinks alright, more malt depth would help. A nice starter Rauch

Poured into a seidel. Clear copper color with an ecru head that fizzes out pretty quick. No lacing. Aroma is salted meat with a mild phenolic plastic note. Some sweet caramel tempers the smoke, making this beer less intense than the Schlenkerla rauchbiers. Flavor is pretty much identical. Nice light smokiness, not like drinking a Christmas ham. Light body and pretty clean. Drinkable and even kinda refreshing.

Well balanced malt and smoke aroma with the moderate smoke playing against a relatively sweet malt profile. Bacon and wood are the main elements of the smoke. No hops.

Very clear, deep amber colour with a tiny, short lasting head.

Solidly malty flavour with a mild smokiness. Fairly sweet but also quite clean. This is actually a very easy to drink rauchbier which is nice and is quite different to the Schlenkerla version.

The mouthfeel is quite creamy with a medium body and lowish carbonation.

Quite drinkable for a rauchbier though I find myself preferring the boldness of the richer, smokier versions.

Served in a Hirter stange.

Pours a clear amber-brown with about a finger of light head that leaves little lacing on the glass. The smell is of mesquite BBQ, with hints of green apple, cocoa, and plums. The taste begins with a subtly sweet maltiness, allowing the smokiness to build up behind. That maltiness is what lingers in the aftertaste, though, rather than the smoke, as would be expected. The medium body, coupled with the overall sweetness, makes for a more drinkable rauch than usual.

I had high hopes for this one, despite the fact the new label is not as nice as the one from the picture on BA...
My country, one of my favorite styles, and from a region with heavy german culture, it was promising....
It starts quite nicely, brown with mahogany hues, a nice off-white head with good retention after puring on a mug...
The smell, although quite pleasant and "smoked", bacon and sausage-like, as expected, is unfortunately quite mild, at least for me, that love a heavy smoked aroma like the Schlenkerlas.
It has a reasonably smooth body , and the taste has some unexpected sweet maltiness, and the obviously expected smoked, sausage like flavors. It is a bit more complex that Schlenkerla, but that is secondary to lackinh that big smoked "punch" I personally love.
Reasonably good beer, a nice surprise from my country, not exactly known from great beers, but a little below what I expect from rauchbiers. Perhaps a good introduction for non-rauchbier lovers, but I prefer the wicked smoked flavors of the german counterparts.

I am a fan of smoked beer and this Brazilian entrant did not disappoint.

Poured a nice brown color with a good quality head which dissipated rather quickly.

Very easy drinking.... Crisp clean and fresh. Not as smoky as some of the beers imported from Bamburg but a good deal of smoke flavor especially on the back end. I likely the fact that this was a bit more heavy on the malt. Overall a interesting take on my favorite style.

Quite a refreshing beer on a hot day.

Tan head about two fingers, dark amber color with red highlights. Ample carbonation and a nice head, good lacing.

Smokey aroma, but light in a way. Singed wood is pointed without getting too acidic or charred, and the aroma's presence is notable.

The lager flavor at the beginning are light, creamy and sweet; they get overtaken in the middle by the silky smoke which meets up with a caramel malt backing. Subtle hop presence is there for balance, everything is nuanced and not forced. The light smoke character is very good for drinkability - rating Defumada against other rauchbier, drinkability should be higher, though the flavors perhaps less adventurous.

Finish is clean, a nice caramel malt driven lager. The smoky aftertaste hangs around long enough to be effective, but is also whisked nicely off the palate by scrubbing hops. All around a very nice brew.

Strong copper color with some light ruby and hay colored highlights. Very light tan, two finger head after a zealous pour. Pretty good retention and some sticking after each sip. Smokey bread and old world candy aroma, the hops and yeast combine to add a touch of spicy fruit to the nose. Starts with soesoft, campfire toasted malt that give a note of fruity coffee cakeRoasted plums mix with a faint peppermint hop lingering in the back of the tongue. Medium, smokey smooth body. Maybe not sessionable in my book, but still a drinkable beer.

Found this 12oz brown bottle at Binny's in Glen Ellyn, IL. but my label is completely different from the one shown above in the BA picture. Mine has a picture of a freight train engine on it with the words Defumada smoked lager on the front instead of the German word rauchbier.

The beer pours a clear caramel color that left a 2 finger tan head that dissipated in less than 30 seconds and left no lacing. This is the clearest dark beer I've ever seen. You can look right thru the glass and see things on the other side.

The smell is an interesting mix of heavy malt and smoked deli meats. It's unlike any other beer smell.

Very sweet caramel taste. In fact the caramel is more pronounced than the smoke flavor. Some burnt malt is in there as well. The finish has a nice touch of spicy alcohol flavor to it.

The mouthfeel is surprisingly weak and watery. How they put all those flavors in there and still made it so light I don't know, but this was the most disappointing part of the beer. The carbonation is low to medium, which is OK for this style, but I wish it was thicker or chewier.

Don't know if anyone would want to polish off a full 6 of these all in one sitting, but I sure wouldn't mind another one.
