The wives went shopping, and my new friend and I went drinking. With the Lions game ending, the bar area was pretty full, though the rest of the restaurant was dead. Took about 10 minutes before we got our first beer, and we had to get the bartender (a young kid who's shift was ending). Had their porter, it was passable. Certainly nothing special, but okay. After the first beer was finished had to wait another 10 minutes before we could get the attention of the next bartender. TV reception wasn't even that good. Won't be coming back anytime soon. I was there, I wanted a beer. And that's about all I got.

I went into Thunder Bay not expecting to be very impressed overall--after all, it is in Great Lakes Crossing, one of the worst malls in metro Detroit. Previously, Alcatraz Brewing Co. occupied this space--it had decent beer at reasonable prices, and mediocre food at high prices. Needless to say, I ended up not being impressed with this new brewery.
The atmosphere was uncomfortable and too 'restauranty', didn't seem very focused on the beer. I sat at the bar and asked the bartender what the beer selections were. I asked him about a few of the beers, and he didn't seem very knowledgable. I settled on a limited brew of a Belgian ale, and asked about the style of Belgian as well as the ABV--he had NO clue whatsoever. Nevertheless, I went with it--nothing special, and, in fact, the aftertaste was actually almost skunky and not at all pleasant. I'll probably go back to try another beer or two another time, but am in no hurry at all. With the few far superior brewpubs in the area, this is not one to frequent unless you happen to be shopping and in need of a beer!

I had seen this in BeerFly, and wanted to check it out, since I was going to be in the area. I didn't know it was actually located inside the Great Lakes Crossing mall until we got there. I was kind of put off by that fact, but I wanted to give it a shot (and I was backed by a hungry race team). Once inside, I saw that the atmosphere wasn't that great. There were many TVs tuned to sports stations that were turned up too loud. Other than that, there wasn't anything bad - just nothing special. The fermenting vessels were arranged nicely, and in full view which was a nice touch.
Once we sat down, the service was attentive and friendly. They servers made sure our waters were always full and the beer stayed flowing.
The beer menu was pretty decent for such a small place. I was a little put off by the fact that they didn't have a year-round stout (but they do have an RIS as a seasonal offering). Their seasonals this time around were a hefe weizen and a belgian pale ale. I had an IPA and a hefe with dinner, both of which were very good.
Overall the food quality was average (not bad, but not outstanding) and the beers were above average. Good value for what we got. Definitely worth checking out if you are shopping at the Great Lakes Crossing mall, but also worth a shot if you are in the area.
