An array of dark malts and a heaping dose of cocoa nibs* from French Broad Chocolate Lounge make this chocolate stout an instant classic. Aged on nibs for a number of weeks, this beer displays the gentle alchemy of chocolate and malted barley. Available now on the Nitro tap for superior smoothness.
*Broken pieces of the cocoa bean. FBCL’s chocolate maker hand-sorted, roasted, cracked, & winnowed beans from the La Red Guaconejo cooperative of the Dominican Republic.

I wish I could remember who sent me this NC beauty.
Truth be told, I've sat on this for a full year and a half.
Pours a a dark brown leather. A creamy, milky head forms. Cafe mocha in color. Beautiful. 2 plus fingers high. Eventually it settles to a consistent, lightly creamy ring that sticks around for the whole ride.
Smell is gorgeous, lush, and surprisingly almost devoid of any chocolate notes. Primarily a roasted malty sweetness.
Flavor begins with a gentle roast of malt, moving toward coffee, and eventually some baker's cocoa (unsweetened), and finally a rounded out earthy note that oh so subtly nods toward peat. Finishes with the cocoa.
Mouthfeel is creamy, one could say lush at first, then actually finishes a tad watery.
Overall, a very nice, not overly sweet, chocolate milk stout. Only thing I'd like is to have the mouthfeel finish the way it begins. But I'm not knocking this one a bit.

Bottled 2/14/14

Pours black with a small tan head that quickly settles to a creamy ring. Sweet chocolaty malt aroma upfront back up by coffee bean roast, creamy nougat, and nutty oats. Nice roasted chocolate malt profile in the flavor as well, unsurprisingly. Not like some chocolate stouts where it's all chocolate sweetness all the time, this lets the oats and coffee-like roast come through to add some depth and keep things drinkable. Quite a bit of coffee actually, in a fresh beany sort of way, which is a pleasant surprise. Medium bodied and slightly creamy. Nicely done.

A: Dark-opague brown with a surprisingly modest tan head.

S: Ooooo. Deep roasty cocoa, dark chocolate, creamy caramel, and dark roast coffee beans. A touch of tobacco, and smoked meat. Very pleasant and nicely rounded.

T: Brighter than expected from the nose, and still very chocolatey. Roast coffee beans, smooth creamy oats, seemingly light and fluffy.

M: Soft, smooth medium feeling body with a full frothiness to it. Liquid but with a melted chocolate kind of quality. Cool on the palate as well. Quite nice...

O: Nice one. Not too heavy, not one sided with chocolate. Nice balance and flavor variety. Coffee and cream included.

S: Chocolate and coffee aromas dominate a malt forward nose.
T: Rich malty flavors of bittersweet dark chocolate & oats.
M: Smooth and rich. Sweetens up as it warms. Dry finish.
O: A very good Oatmeal Stout.

No bottling date that I can see.

A: Pours a very dark brown, not quite black. Tall, frothy medium brown head. Head fades slowly with minimal lacing but great head retention.

S: Oh yeah, really nice. Bittersweet chocolate and sweet grainy oatmeal. Surprising amount of coffee too. Pretty sure there's no actual coffee in there but it certainly smells like coffee beans. Get a bit of toasted malt in there too, like pretzels.

T: Lots of bittersweet chocolate intermingled with coffee beans, giving it sort of a mocha-like flavor. Loaded with oatmeal, giving it a sweet, creamy character, particularly in the finish where it is joined by some nice milk chocolate.

M: Light/medium bodied. Borderline watery at times, probably the only knock against this beer. Smooth and creamy in general though which saves it.

O: Damn nice chocolate oatmeal stout. Great chocolate, coffee and oatmeal flavors. Well balanced and easy drinking. Pretty sweet, almost overly so at times but I don't mind. I bet this would be amazing on nitro. Tasty. Well done again, Pisgah.

Pours a deep dark chocolate brown with reddish brown hue when held to the light,a thinner beige head atop.Chocolate to be expected is the star of the show in both the aromas and flavors, dark roast coffee and mild alcohol sweetness is also detected in the nose.Dark chocolate flavors ,nuttiness, and roasted coffee notes as well to go along with some vanilla and brown sugar-like sweetness.A dessert pairing no doubt,a pretty rich stout,a chocolate lovers dream.
