Of the Coffee infused beers of Asheville, this one takes the cake. Come in 6 pack cans this year. No more bottles. Brewed with coffee from a few blocks away at Dynamite Coffee. Very, very good beer. The right amount of coffee without being obnoxious. This is a winner.

A: Color is mostly black (wouldn’t say pitch black though) and slightly brown. Small off-white head: light brown; tan, and some retention

S: This is all about the coffee with hints of chocolate, caramel, and malt

T: Granted, the coffee presence is pulling some weight here; nonetheless, the induction of chocolate and caramel balances out extremely well. Slight acidity/bitterness from this coffee treat as well.

M: Smooth, creamy, milky, velvety, and has a light/Medium body. The carbonation is on par

O: An extremely fine coffee stout; the sweetness and the tartness were by no means overboard. An excellent example of infusing beer with coffee, and thus definitely one of the better coffee stouts out there; enjoy this in the evening, or at the sound of your morning alarm clock….delicious either way

A: The beer is close to being black in color—traces of reddish brown are visible near the edges of the glass when it is held up to the light. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving a collar around the edge of the glass and some small patches of bubbles on the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of freshly ground French roast coffee are present in the nose.
T: Just like the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of roasted coffee beans and has a light amount of associated bitterness.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer could be considered as an alternative to your daily cup of joe, especially if it is a weekend. It delivers a strong dose of coffee aromas and flavors and is rather easy to drink.

Poured into a Dogfish Spiegelau glass. No freshness date.

A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with a 1/4 inch light brown head that retains well before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Big earthy coffee aroma and some likewise earthy yeast. Almost has a Belgian characteristic to it like Chocolatized Vortex

T- Moderately bitter roasted coffee flavor with a bit more of that yeast element coming through. Sweetness is mild as is the alcohol presence. Very drinkable. Once the palate acclimates, the stout side becomes more apparent with the coffee being more of an afterthought. Caramel aftertaste.

M- Not as creamy as I was hoping. Medium carbonation and a full body.

O- I had this about 9 months ago on draft and was blown away by it. Now, it's good, but not really what I remember. I heard there was a slight recipe change before they started canning it to make the ABV lower but I see no separate listing with a different ABV. Oh well, still good stuff.

I was a bit disappointed to see that this beer had not been properly rated in nearly 3 months. So I pulled this bottle from the cellar to give it a go. This one has been in my cellar for about 6-8 months.

Even with the age I get almost three fingers of deep bread y brown head with a vigorous pour. It lasts a good bit and leaves a wall of lace behind as it slowly fades. Body is pure silky blackness as it should be.

Nose is of coffee distinctly up front. You also get a bit of earthy grain and tobacco to boot. A solid nose but not all that developed.

The flavor, well this is where things go a-rye. With first sip the stand out here is...sour. Yes it is apparent that there was a problem here in terms of infection. Shockingly enough however it really isn't bad. Although I know this beer was not meant to be a sour it plays the hand very well. Dark fruits are drawn from the coffee and almost come off like a Belgian dark ale. I have said this many times, some of the best beers come from accidents or brewery mistakes. The taste here is exciting and very nice. Tartness is complete and thorough across the palate.

Mouthfeel is a dry sour feel that is actually very good. The coffee plays a bit on the mouthfeel as well.

As it stands this is not what I expected at all. But it was a very pleasant surprise.

Picked up a bottle of this and Vortex II in Asheville when I was there in August.

A - dark, almost pitch black, with a off-white head which leaves a nice rim

S - pure coffee, lots of chocolate, had a Founder's Breakfast Stout the next day and the smell was pretty on par with that

T - coffee, chocolate, a bit of tartness up front that maybe shouldn't be there, but pretty subtle, nice semi-dry bitterness on finish

M - maybe a little bit thinner than I expected, tingles the sides of my tongue a bit

O - a beauty coffee stout. Despite having a little age on it the beer still held up well. I assume it would be even better fresh, but as it is, it's one of the nicer coffee stouts I've had in a while

A: Pours an opaque yet clear jet black in color with minimal amounts of gentle visible carbonation along the surface of the beer and moderate amounts of cola brown highlights at the edges.

S: Strong aromas of slightly sweet coffee/espresso - like one that has cream and sugar added to it. Very light notes of roasted malts and just a hint of chocolate.

T: Upfront there is a light flavor of roasted and slightly ashy malts that is followed by strong flavors of coffee/espresso - reminds me of a cuban coffee with milk and sugar. Moderate amounts of bitterness which lingers for quite awhile.

M: Medium bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Smooth, almost creamy.

O: If you enjoy coffee, this is a beer that you really need to try... I love coffee and I really enjoy this one. Super easy to drink with well hidden alcohol. Definitely my favorite beer from this brewery.

I get the opportunity to sample my first from Pisgah thanks to Mikesgroove, thanks Mike! Valdez is a fine looking beer! Pours black with some transparency in the form of chestnut highlights at the bottom of the glass. The dirty tan head grew to a solid finger and a half on the pour and fell rather slowly to a skimming and respectable collar. The head leaves a patch or two of lacing here and there.

Wow! This beer is not really beer! It's cold coffee! Well, that's what the aroma suggests anyways. High quality fresh pressed coffees grabs the nose and never let's go. As I stir the head I still get massive coffee but a drop of cream and a pinch of sugar have been added. As the head dies back down it's back to black coffee.

Big coffee in the flavor as well, obviously. I wonder if there's any beer in here? Although the coffee is everywhere it just doesn't live up to the intensity of the aroma, which would be near impossible to do. That's just me being picky though. Finishes with a solid coffee bitterness that grows the more I drink.

The mouthfeel is a little on the thin side but it actually increases the drinkability. I could be wrong but I think this was created to be a fairly drinkable coffee stout instead of a sippin' brew. So keeping that in mind the mouthfeel fits well.

Like I said earlier the drinkability on this stout is up there pretty high. It's already going down far to fast.

I have no idea how the guys at Pisgah squeezed this much coffee into a stout but I commend them for it. I'm already jittery and jonesin' for a cigarette! I'd love to see this get bottled in four packs in the future, although that may be a long way off since they only do limited bombers now. Thanks again Mike for sending this tasty treat!

Poured into a pint glass out of a 22oz bomber.

Pours pitch black with a one finger dark tan head. Very good head retention with ok lacing.

Aroma is all about the coffee. Lots of medium roast coffee with hints of dark chocolate and dark roasted malt. Some caramel in there too. It is really hard to get past the coffee, though, but it is inviting.

The taste is more and more coffee. Some milk chocolate and caramel/toffee. Really the perfect blend of coffee and chocolate with no one character being too overpowering. Bitterness is very light but this beer is not too sweet either so it balances out nicely.

Overall, a very well done beer from Pisgah. Wish I would have picked up more than one.

Great overall beer from those brewing greats of Pisgah. I preferred the thinner body, along w/ the lower abv%, as it tended to bring the coffee accents out. Plus, it was an easy drinker.

This one is all about the coffee. The roasted flavor is there, then a sweet creaminess, & finishes w/ a sweet, slight chalkiness. The coffee lingers on the tongue way after you've taken your last sip. Truly outstanding!

Pours a jet black in color w/ a 1 finger tan head that produces nice sticky lacing. Aromas of coffee beans, roasted malts, chocolate, and subtle vanilla. The flavor starts w/ initial chocolate sweetness, leading into smooth coffee, and finishes w/ mild vanilla and ever so slight hop bitterness. Medium bodied and finishes dry. I could drink this brew all day especially w/ the lower end ABV.

Overall, this is one of my favorite brews out of the South region and the best coffee stout coming out of the South hands down. The brew is extremely flavorful, but yet very drinkable, just fantastic stuff!

big thanks to hopsleroy for hitting this long time want. enjoyed from a mother earth brewing snifter.

a - poured a watery black that settled into the glass deep and ominous with a tan mocha bubbly head that bubbled away quickly.

s - YUM! gourmet coffee. a fine roast. some chocolate. really just dominated by a really nice gourmet coffee smell. smells fantastic.

t - again, HUGE coffee notes. this is not for the faint of heart. big roast and some hints of bakers chocolate...some nice sweetness. i'm a fan.

m - slightly watery. almost tastes like a watered down coffee. carbonation is soft, body has some porter like char.

o - overall, i'm a BIG fan of this one. it is huge for coffee, but a bit watered down, but still works. not sure what vintage this is, but it doesn't taste anything like what some of the bad reviews boast so there might be bottle variation or even some batch variation? i couldn't have dug this one more.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber to a snifter. Served above 48º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a silk foamy brown tone head with a slightly above average retention. Body is a dark brown with red highlights. Sediment heavy on the bottom, light flecks don't quite settle. Decent head quality, a little crisp and doesn't last long and lacing is thin. A decent appearance but worthy of much more. 3.25

(Smell) I am slightly put off by the aroma, perhaps by its dryness or the acid presence which makes a big part of the aroma. Bitter coffee bean notes forward and a chalky chocolate chip cookie. Earthy hop presence in places. Mild tones of char beyond a generally clean aroma. Relatively light on the nose, with a lesser balance towards sweetness and a bigger emphasis on bitterness and tart black coffee, light on the creamy notes. Most interesting is a doughy dry yeast aroma with some slight notes of tart fruit. The coffee notes are in decent balance with the other aromas in this beer, as there seems plenty of substance to be had. Potency is medium-high. 3.5

(Taste) Most interesting. Front has a fruity juice tartness, followed through with roasty chocolate notes. Mild black mocha coffee finish and a hint of char. Very heavy emphasis on fruit, quite interesting and a bit unusual for my expectations of a coffee stout, but not an unwelcome variation. The balance is actually quite decent and dryness isn't overwhelming. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Oily slickness with a mild creaminess on the finish. Tartness in the body is really a confusion to the appropriate texture, slickness and creaminess is probably the best bet nonetheless. Body is just shy of medium for an Imperial Stout, medium/high amongst all beers. Alcohol presence is largely concealed. 3.75

(Overall) My thought is that this beer is a bit older than anticipated and that the yeast have had some fun transforming the beer. It wasn't a terrible transformation, just a much fruitier beer than I had anticipated with a bit less coffee and roasty flavors than I had desired. I hope to get a really fresh batch of this beer in the near future so that I can confirm these suspicions, as this beer currently seems unfocused, and perhaps misguided, at the worst. 3.25

A Looks like a average brew. Creamy head that sticks to the glass.

S Smells stoutish with much roasted coffee aroma.

T Extremely bitter and over carbonated. Most coffee I've ever had in a beer. Raw chocolate undertone with slight creaminess. And a tart sour finish that just doesn't belong.

M Too bitter to really enjoy.

O I would almost think it is infected from the sourness, but their is still a balanced flavor setting in this off flavored cocktail. Could not finish a glass.

Consumed a few times in the past 2 weeks, both on-tap and bottled

Classification as a Double Stout is quite misleading. The bottled version is over-carbonated and may be confused as *gasp* infected. It just isn't right - fruity and tangy with a metallic finish. On-draft, its an iced coffee overload and is really a nice beer. Unfortunately, the most recent bottling doesn't translate and I was really quite embarrassed to open this for people not familiar with Pisgah.

Bottled January 2009 (discovered today in my cellar)

Appearance: Pours pitch black with a massive, creamy tan head that coats the pint glass with a sheet of lace

Smell: Coffee, coffee and coffee....with sugar; smells like a Cuban coffee

Taste: Cuban coffee with chocolate underneath; the sweeter aspects grow in the middle, with chocolate building in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with creamy carbonation

Overall: While it is a bit too sweet for my palate, that may be a function of age, with the hops falling by the wayside; other than that, the beer has held up pretty well over the past four years

A: 4.0 this beer has a very light translucence and a deep dark hue
S: 4.5 has an amazing aroma of dark chocolate and cinnamon
T: 4.0 surprisingly hopper than I expected. Very bitter on the end.
MF: 3.0 kind of flat for my taste overall, the body is not as deep as I expected.
O: 3.5 I could have one of these as an ender in an evening but would definitely crash your pallet if an opener. Great smell.

A - black with a thin brown head that has decent retention

S - coffee and roasted malts

T - also simply coffee and roasted malts

M - smooth, well carbonated, medium to full bodied

At first I was a bit disappointed that this was one-dimensional. Honestly, the one dimension is flavorful and enjoyable so I'm not mad about it. This is a nice coffee stout that you can enjoy on your own or share. I would have it again.

On draft at the brewery.

Poured a deep black hue with a wisp of off white foam.

The smell featured a pure full blown coffee grounds.

The taste consisted of a strong bitter black coffee with elements of charcoal.

The mouthfeel was toward the thinner side of the style.

If you like coffee you'll enjoy this beer. A bit thin on the mouthfeel however.

Coffee blammo WOW in the nose right off the bat. Amazing aroma. Absolutely perfect for a coffee stout. Roasted dark coffee, the stout has medium body, lacy appearance, and a clean finish. The taste doesn't match the aroma, unfortunately, as it can't match the coffee bitterness and sweetness, and the water sticks out just a little. That said, it's incredible to smell, and that factor alone keeps you coming back.

Pours black in color with a finger of tan head. A bit of spicy coffee to go along with lots of roasted malt and maybe a hint of dark chocolate. There is just a bit of vanilla type sweetness. The flavor is slightly sweet but still fairly heavy on the coffee, which adds a little bit of spiciness. Lots of roasted malt and a bit of dark chocolate. Just an okay coffee stout.

A: Pour a very dark brown with a big fluffy medium brown head. Fades slowly, leaving a decent film of lacing on the glass.

S: Huge coffee aroma. Like fresh roasted beans. Pretty much dominates, maybe a little chocolate creeps in.

T: Oddly not a coffee overload. It's got a bitter coffee flavor up front but then turns into a nice roasted malt char with lots of dark chocolate. Surprisingly well balanced and delicious.

M: Medium bodied, smooth. Bit of coffee bitterness lingers in the mouthfeel.

O: Was expecting a coffee bomb but wow this one surprised me. Wonderfully drinkable stout with a strong and tasty coffee element BUT it's balanced well for a great brew. I'm not even a coffee drinker and I'm pretty "meh" on most coffee beers. This is a must-try for ANY stout lover, but especially a coffee stout lover.

From a bomber into a snifter
Vintage: 2010

APPEARANCE: A dark brown pour yields a two finger, medium looking, noisy, crackly, dark tan head with decent retention. Black body, opaque and medium carbonation evident. Head fades to a full film on top. A half wisp and a ring remain until the end leaving some nice lacing down the glass. Very nice looking beer, though noisy heads are never that appealing.

SMELL: Medium strength nose of roasted malts, roasted coffee beans, sweet cream and vanilla notes. A hint of caramel as well. Like a latte or a very milky, creamy coffee. A very nice nose for the age, though is has mellowed quite a bit at this point I fear.

TASTE: Some roasted and caramel malts up front with sweet cream and milky, roasted coffee through the middle into the finish. Sweet cream and vanilla mesh well with the coffee flavors, making it much like a latte, as the nose had advertised. Milder aftertaste of sweet cream, roasted coffee and a light bitterness lingers nicely on the palate. Very nice and appealing, but much like the nose, this has probably mellowed quite a bit over time.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Light and creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry. Nice and creamy feel.

OVERALL: I wouldn’t call this an imperial stout, but as an American coffee stout, this one is quite nice. I would think the nose and flavor profile was much bolder and forthcoming when the beer was fresh, but after over a year in the bottle, it’s certainly a nice drink; people who enjoy coffee stouts that are more restrained will definitely be extremely pleased with this. I certainly enjoyed this one and the bomber disappeared far too quickly. Thanks again for the brews jbeatty!

Enjoyed on-tap @ Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria in Asheville, NC for $4. Tapped from an unknown tap handle (since sitting @ a table) into a 16oz Barley's Taproom & Pizzeria Pint Glass.

Aroma- I really got my nose into this one! The strongest roast and burnt coffee aroma was hanging around. Very complexed for the style. Could have gone on and on with the aroma but there is much more to this brew!

Appearance- Received with a 1.5 finger head that stayed for good time. Had the deepest brown color body without becoming black. Then, covered the ENTIRE glass with lace.

Flavor- A good, semi-burnt taste started this one out and then Folger's Coffee (cheap roast) came in the middle. Cool! Easy going malts also. Possibly a Cafe Americano when it comes to it.

Mouthfeel- Medium-Full Bodied, Light Carbonation, Smooth, and creamy. Everything a 2X stout should be (without the warming).

Overall Impression- So wild how I found Folger's coffee in this one! Great taste and supported the style well. I'm hoping to find many of these in bottle to enjoy at another date and bring back for friends in the Midwest.

Poured into Aecht snifter courtesy of aasher. Pours a solid black with mocha-tan foam head that leaves about a quarter-inch.

All kinds of chile on the nose with some coffee and dark chocolate. Am i reviewing an Imperial Stout?

Chile on the nose, just like the smell. Coffee is real solid as is the chocolate. More tangy than one would think.

Carbonation is slightly high for the style, but the coffee and chile help to balance it out.

Decent beer, but too much carbonation and lack of chewiness. Perhaps i should let it warm a little bit more?
