Sampling at room temperatrue poured into a snifter. The beer pours a dark cocoa brown with foamy tan head of 3cm even with a gentle pour. Aroma is lite coffee grounds and roasted malt. Some brown sugar mixed in the background. Predominantly a roasty nose. First sip reveals an average body with silky smooth texture and mild rolling carbonation. Flavor is sweet malt and roasty with again brown sugar. A little coffee bite but no hops or ABV show up for this dance. Very easy smooth drinking beer. Aftertaste lingers for a little bit but then is gone, maybe a little chalky on the finish. OVerall a nice beer that isnt amazingly robust but does drink easy and taste good.

Big thanks to mikesgroove for sending me this 750mL bottle in a trade recently.

A: Pours dark black with a TON and I wish I could stress it more...a TON of khaki colored head (seriously looked like a beer float but no ice cream) and laced the glass a lot as it settled.

S: The dominant smell is chocolate, then roasted malts and coffee in the background...not complex or anything, but smells absolutely delicious and I hope the taste is similar

T: Roasted malts come out way more in the taste, then the coffee and chocolate are in the background this time.

M: I think far too much of the carbonation went out in the pour on this because what's left is a little more thin than I would expect. I even poured carefully so I dunno how to fix this. I get hints of creaminess when the carbonation stands out.

D: Because it's a little thin I could probably drink more than some creamy beers, but the flavor isn't really anything special to me unfortunately. Not really any alcohol picked up which is good. It tastes just like the majority of imperial stouts do. Now, that isn't all bad, because imperial stouts taste good, this just doesn't stand out above other examples of the style.

Coffee blammo WOW in the nose right off the bat. Amazing aroma. Absolutely perfect for a coffee stout. Roasted dark coffee, the stout has medium body, lacy appearance, and a clean finish. The taste doesn't match the aroma, unfortunately, as it can't match the coffee bitterness and sweetness, and the water sticks out just a little. That said, it's incredible to smell, and that factor alone keeps you coming back.

Enormous head that is just a shade lighter than brown. Almost completely opaque in color. Really beautiful beer. Smells of fresh coffee and dark chocolate, as well as some vanilla, and maybe even some cherry.

Coffee dominates the taste. Sipping it is like sipping an espresso shot. Some bitterness comes through. The coffee overpowers any chocolate flavors that may try to come through. The aftertaste is sweet and pleasant, though. Full bodied and very thick mouthfeel. Nice to sip, but hard to get through the whole thing.

I haven't tried too many coffee stouts, but this one really stood out to me. Definitely worth a try!

On tap at the brewery. Deep brown in color, tan head. Smells like and espresso or something. From the smell I was expecting some serious coffee flavor when I tasted it. However, it's not as harsh as I thought it would be. Besides some malty sweetness, maybe a little chocolate, it comes off as a bubbly iced coffee. Little to no hop bitterness, but a good amount of coffee bitterness. I enjoyed this one a good bit. Probably would go well with ice cream or something. Don't really get why it's listed here as a imperial stout, but whatever.

Thanks to stoutfiend27 for providing this bottle for a recent tasting that we had.

Poured into a tulip, which was my weapon of choice for the day, the beer is a fully opaque black that is capped by a fluffy and creamy hot chocolate-colored head. It is well retained and produces significant lacing in a cobweb-like pattern.

The smell is dominated by natural coffee notes. Too often, I feel, coffee stouts are augmented by cheap imitation coffee flavor. Not so with Valdez. A natural coffee and roast inundate the nose. The taste brings on more of the same, with the notable addition of caramel to the dessert-like medley. There is also a hint of chocolate that comes through in the finish.

Creamy and full-bodied, this beer does not disappoint. It lived up to the expectations I had based on the little that I had heard about it. A very solid coffee stout, and if not for its relative difficulty to procure, could be one of my go-tos for the style.

Appears clear and black with the darkest head I've seen on a stout. Smells like an Irish Coffee, missing only the more vanilla notes. Tastes nutty with mildly roasted coffee shining through. Very dry. A little harsh in the end and would benefit from a little aging. This is a great beer that deserves it's place in the top 10 IS's. Well done.

22oz Bomber Bottled January 09' Consumed January 10'

Appearance: Pours an attractive deep dark brown with a 2 finger light brown crown that shows some retention and lace.

Smell: Chocolate malt, mellowed coffee, roast malt.

Taste: More coffee than chocolate (opposite of nose) and the finish actually tastes like cream! My mind screams "iced coffee" over and over!

Mouthfeel: A touch thick but mighty slick too. Carbonation is ultra fine and comes into play about 2/3 of the way through the swallow.

Drinkability: Easy living!

22oz bomber into a tulip.

A: Impenetrably black. Even holding this to the light, this rejects all temptation to give a hint of color. Small half finger tan head recedes quickly.

S: Big coffee dominates. Some chocolate to the nose as well, with toasty malt.

T: Not as powerful on the coffee as the nose would suggest. Lots of chocolate and toasted malt pour through. Sweet mostly, till a nice coffee layer comes in on the finish.

M: Very smooth till swallow where a light dryness comes in with the coffee flavor. Quite nice combination.

D: A very abundantly flavorful stout at such a small ABV%. Finishing the bomber was not a problem. Really enjoyed this stout, though at $9 for the 22oz it is not something I'd get often.

I've been wanting to try this one for a few years now and finally broke down and acquired a bottle...

Poured into a Chimay goblet...

Pours a 98% black with only a little brown showing around the edges when I hold the goblet up to the light... This brew forms a good head at first but that quickly dies down to leave just a little wispy one.. Not bad at all...

Huge pungent aromas of dark chocolate and dark roasted coffee beans that have been freshly ground... I have a Keurig coffeemaker and there's a brand of coffee that is super dark and rich and when its brewing it smells just like this beer... Very pungent and dark smelling with notes of what might be a little smokiness like a good smoked porter might have...

Loads of very dark roasted malts and coffee beans up front here... It's not hugely complex but I think that this is the sort of beer that doesn't have to be... You know what you're getting when you buy it.. It's a coffee stout first and foremost..

The mouthfeel leaves quite a bit to be desired here... This is basically a coffee porter if judged by the mouthfeel here... It isnt in the same class in this category with the other brews of the style...

Even with the thin mouthfeel, I still liked this one quite a bit... It's very drinkable and tasty and I'm very glad I got to give this one a shot... Would I purchase this one again? Hmmm.. hard to say.. I'd like to try it on tap sometime and do a comparison... The thin mouthfeel here sort of mars this one in my opinion...

A: The beer is close to being black in color—traces of reddish brown are visible near the edges of the glass when it is held up to the light. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving a collar around the edge of the glass and some small patches of bubbles on the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of freshly ground French roast coffee are present in the nose.
T: Just like the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of roasted coffee beans and has a light amount of associated bitterness.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer could be considered as an alternative to your daily cup of joe, especially if it is a weekend. It delivers a strong dose of coffee aromas and flavors and is rather easy to drink.

A: We have a rather massive gusher, resulting in a black beer with an overwhelmingly large dark brown head. Retention isn't all that hot, but this beer looks good allasame

S: Coffee. Freshly brewed, mellow and complex. Cold pressed? Some chocolate is present in the back, lending a decadent note to this beer. Pleasant roastiness. Quite awesome, really. As pronounced as the coffee is, there's enough going on behind it to keep this beer interesting.

T: Tastes like coffee. Just pure coffee. I usually dislike one-dimensional beers but this is one crazy good cuppa. Beautiful medium roast coffee with a little bit of chocolate. As a stout, this isn't all that great, but as a beer? Great. Finishes dry, long and bitter

M: Light with soft carbonation and a finish that's brilliant, this one's awesome. The pure coffee bitterness is netherworldly

D: This bomber is going in about 20 minutes, which isn't a great sign for me.

Pours an opaque black color with a froth of heavily tanned head. Some cloudy retention and a few spots of lacing left behind.

Wonderful scents of coffee beans and roasted warmth. Tones of dark malts, chocolate, and nuttiness. Practically no alcohol scent, a light touch of hops.

Eruption of roasted bean coffee flavor right up front. Nutty and sweet with chocolate and a light touch of molasses. Faint hint of caramel and vanilla as well. Layers of dark malts with roasted warmth. Faint hoppiness towards the finish with more coffee flavor.

Fuller body, higher carbonation, pretty smooth but prickly on the tongue. Really delicious coffee profile on this one, both in the nose and flavor - I'd definitely drink this again.

A: Pours black with about a finger of chocolate-colored head that quickly recedes into a thin ring with a little lacing.

S: There are some roasted malt and chocolate aromas in there, but mostly it's just coffee. Full-bodied, rich, dark-roasted coffee.

T: Very similar to the aroma, this beer is just bursting with rich, dark-roasted coffee flavors. There are touches of roasted malt and chocolate, but mostly coffee. The finish is surprisingly smooth and not bitter.

M: Medium-thick body with low-medium carbonation, this beer is thick and creamy.

D: This beer goes down very easily. It's a pretty simple beer, tasting more like a glass of high quality iced coffee with carbonation than a beer. Very straight-forward, but very good as well.

A dear friend of mine picked up a growler of Valdez while visiting the brewery two weeks ago. She raved about it, and although my curiosity was roused I put it aside until I had time to drink and think. It was well worth it! This may be the best coffee stout I've ever had.

The growler made a dynamic "poof" as I turned the cap. It poured pitch black into my Pisgah pint glass (also provided by my dear friend). The one-finger head was beautiful; it was dark brown and very dense. One deep inhalation picks up aromas of freshly ground coffee beans and dark, dark malts. There's also an extremely mild fruity ester present, but it takes a very deep sniff to detect it. Flavors of espresso attack the tongue with the first mouthful. The aforementioned sweetness is there as well, but it soon dissipates into a nice, mellow dark coffee center. The finish is a bit hoppy, which balances well with the other flavors. What I really appreciate is the decent malt backbone this version of the coffee stout has; I had another local version of this style just a few weeks ago, and, although it was quite nice, there was too much coffee and not enough balancing malts. This is a far cry better. Well done, Pisgah! I hope to drop by and refill my growler soon!

Super excited to try this big beer from the boys at Pisgah. Poured into a snifter glass. Pours a thick viscous black with no head on top at all. Nothing. Big roasted coffee scents burst out. This is strong right after popping the cap. Lots of espresso, some milk chocolate, cream, toasted sugar. This smells great. A very good lead-in to drinking this bad boy.

The mouth is very crisp and bubbly...too much so. For this style I prefer big and heavy, as this one is, but it needs to be smoother and a little creamier. Too much carbonation going on. Great roasted coffee flavors all over this. Excellent bitter black coffee balanced with a creamy milky chocolate on the end. Slight grassy hops noted on the finish as well. I like that touch. It claimed to be a coffee beer, and a coffee beer it was. Wow.

*Note: This was my third "coffee" beer in a row (all different styles), and this one was my favorite for sure. One of the best coffee beers I've had in awhile.

Beer is black and opaque with a thin tan head that leaves a lot of lacing on the glass. Head has moderate retention to it.

Aroma is roasty, mildly sweet and uncomplex. Smells like a big stout.

MMMM....sweet stout. Beer is medium in body and fills out the palate nice, coating the mouth with a strong feeling of sweetness with some chocolate flavors and some moderate bitterness at the finish. Coffee and roast are distinctive in the finish. I was surprised how sweet and chocolaty this beer was. A very nice beer overall.

Got as an extra from jmu500...thanks again John; looking forward to this, considering it was one of my wants! Vintage 2008.

Poured from a cork and caged 750ml bottle into my Portsmouth large tulip/snifter glass. Pours a dark brown...filling the glass a solid black, and a massive frothy tan head. Head retention is mild...but dissipates into a creamy, patchy surface. Lacing is nice, but slides relatively quick.

Aroma is exactly what I expected...a coffee stout! Loads of great coffee notes and roasted malts.

Flavor is very nice for its style. True to form, a GREAT coffee stout! The coffee flavor is not only strong, but a tasty coffee resemblance. It's so stinkin' drinkable too! Medium body, high carbonation...which isn't generally a good thing for stouts...but this one works well! There's a slight milk or cream flavor added to the coffee, and not much hops to speak of...but that could also be due to age. Delicious!

Received this brew from both tpd975 and hoppymeal in fairly recent trades. This will be my first Pisgah brew and thank the lord! I absolutely love coffee brews and they are by far my favorite 'style'. Drank from my Darkness snifter.

September 2008 on side of bottle. Holy F'n cork, they weld these in apparently.

Appearance- Oh this is a good looking brew. Pours a super dark black with an absolutely huge three finger dark khaki head that recedes fairly slowly. My snifter is half beer, half head. A thin cap and nice manly collar remain behind leaving somewhere between a lot and an ass ton of lacing.
Smell- Coffee. I could easily just end there and this would be my most accurate review of a nose yet. A bit of cream and chocolate but I've said too much...
Taste- Slightly dirty and murky from the start with bits of raw cocoa nibs and acrid watered down coffee. Some cream and light sugar add a smooth sweetness but frankly I think the over-carbonation takes this beer down a notch. No hops to speak of. The majority of the coffee flavor is in the aftertaste after the burn of the CO2 wears off. It's lightly sweet and full of French roast goodness. If not for the aggressive carbonation this would definitely be a 5.
Mouthfeel- Thin body (maybe from adding brewed coffee?) and light crisp feel that is not what I like in this style beer. I prefer smooth and creamy and this is the only flaw in this brew IMO. It's just a shame that this particular flaw affects the flavor so much.
Drinkability- After some of the carbonation escapes this thing really picks up. The coffee seems to come out a bit more and it really shines. Since I never really got the beer cold it honestly didn't take long to smooth out a bit. I'll bump up the mouthfeel a half point more than I would have but it still needs toned down. Okay, no more Nancy negative. This really is a nice coffee brew that tastes delicious and I really did enjoy. Thanks again to Greg and Derek!

A: This poured pitch black with a bit of tan head.
S: It smelled like lots of coffee, with a little cream and vanilla.
T: It tasted like strong coffee, with a bit of dark chocolate and cream and sugary vanilla. It had a lasting bitter aftertaste.
M: It was watery with a little carbonation. A bit too light.
D: This was up there with Peche Mortel and Brunch Weasel for super strong coffee beers. Very nice scent and taste, but the body was sort of weak. Easy enough to drink anyway, as long as you like coffee. Nice beer.

A: Color is mostly black (wouldn’t say pitch black though) and slightly brown. Small off-white head: light brown; tan, and some retention

S: This is all about the coffee with hints of chocolate, caramel, and malt

T: Granted, the coffee presence is pulling some weight here; nonetheless, the induction of chocolate and caramel balances out extremely well. Slight acidity/bitterness from this coffee treat as well.

M: Smooth, creamy, milky, velvety, and has a light/Medium body. The carbonation is on par

O: An extremely fine coffee stout; the sweetness and the tartness were by no means overboard. An excellent example of infusing beer with coffee, and thus definitely one of the better coffee stouts out there; enjoy this in the evening, or at the sound of your morning alarm clock….delicious either way

Into my Duvel glass, pours a slick dark brown to black, a whopping head of tan foam, sitting around forever, with great big bunches off lacing. Lovely. Aroma has nice dark chocolate notes, coffee grounds, mostly coffee, and thats pretty much it. Simply but effective.

Taste is a bit more diverse, some roasted malt entering the mix, maybe a bit of hop, maybe some cream, but its mostly coffee delight, much like the nose. Again, simple, but delicious. The mouth is smooth, full body, the lightest of carbonation, a nice finish. In all, I did a lot of searching for this one, and it isn't a home run hitter, but it is a fine beer.

Kinda light for a stout in appearance. Thin white head. The nose is intense coffee. Starbucks. Hard to believe this is beer. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied at best. Tastes like coffee, with a roasty bitter finish. Fascinating for what it is, but almost difficult to compare against other stouts. Unique for sure.

I get the opportunity to sample my first from Pisgah thanks to Mikesgroove, thanks Mike! Valdez is a fine looking beer! Pours black with some transparency in the form of chestnut highlights at the bottom of the glass. The dirty tan head grew to a solid finger and a half on the pour and fell rather slowly to a skimming and respectable collar. The head leaves a patch or two of lacing here and there.

Wow! This beer is not really beer! It's cold coffee! Well, that's what the aroma suggests anyways. High quality fresh pressed coffees grabs the nose and never let's go. As I stir the head I still get massive coffee but a drop of cream and a pinch of sugar have been added. As the head dies back down it's back to black coffee.

Big coffee in the flavor as well, obviously. I wonder if there's any beer in here? Although the coffee is everywhere it just doesn't live up to the intensity of the aroma, which would be near impossible to do. That's just me being picky though. Finishes with a solid coffee bitterness that grows the more I drink.

The mouthfeel is a little on the thin side but it actually increases the drinkability. I could be wrong but I think this was created to be a fairly drinkable coffee stout instead of a sippin' brew. So keeping that in mind the mouthfeel fits well.

Like I said earlier the drinkability on this stout is up there pretty high. It's already going down far to fast.

I have no idea how the guys at Pisgah squeezed this much coffee into a stout but I commend them for it. I'm already jittery and jonesin' for a cigarette! I'd love to see this get bottled in four packs in the future, although that may be a long way off since they only do limited bombers now. Thanks again Mike for sending this tasty treat!

Served on draft at Duckworths in N Charlotte for $2.50 a pint. Great deal!

Comes to the bar pitch black. A very small tan head is present but then leaves completely. I was disappointed in the appearance of this one. Kind of looks like a cup of coffee in the glass. Actually, it smells like it too.

Aroma is full of coffee. I love it! Not a whole lot else is going on. Mild, freshly brewed coffee seems to be the dominating aroma.

Tastes like coffee as well. The coffee seems somwhat subdued but is certainly the focal point of this one. A bit of fruitiness and roasted grains penetrate the coffee blanket but lack the tenacity to make themselves completely known.

I really dug this one. It was served around 50F or so and as it warmed, it got better. I could drink this one at room temp. A bit thick on the tongue. Quite creamy. So delicious.

Note: This one is only 6.7% abv so how it is considered an Imperial Stout is beyond me. This one drinks like a stout and has the abv of a stout. The abv is very well hidden, however.
