Had on tap from the source on 8/29/08, and I couldn't be happier to review this. What a winner from the boys at Pisgah!. This one poured an almost pale hay color into a pint glass. The head on this was a bomb proof inch at least. What a summer time treat! Lacing on the pint glass the whole way down. Carbonation was very fine, and if anything maybe a touch young. Almost Kolsch like to me. Very light with a little funk to be found. Hints of a belgian brew with some light citrus. Lemon, straw, and perhaps some tangerine. Above all a summer saison! Delicious. Hopefully they bottle this one in the future. Quite a looker!

Pisgah Saison, on tap at the Pisgah Tasting Room, Black Mountain, NC, 12/30/08. Served in a traditional American pint glass.

Appearance: A crystal clear, golden yellow bodied brew with tons of fast, fast, fast well-distributed effervescence of medium size. Whew that's some fast carbonation. The one-finger of white head fades relatively fast but does leave some streaky but sticky lacing.

Aroma: An interesting array of spices and herbs, with rosemary, cloves, thyme, and banana all peeking through, almost like a spice racked hefeweizen, backed up by some light, faint, pale malt.

Taste: Very light and crisp, with hints of spice and fruits. Simplistic, though. Light pale malts, with the fruit coming through mainly as flashes of tart lemon and the spice as cloves. There's also a faintly spicy, hay-like hop presence, but it's pretty mild.

Mouthfeel: Big bubbled, with that same visible huge, crisp effervescence cutting down whatever body there might be on this one pretty effectively.

Drinkability: My least favorite of the Pisgah's I sampled this evening. I thought that this one just didn't have a lot going on - a little too straightforward for my tastes that. That being said, it is a 5.8% saison, so it doesn't lose any drinkability points there. I just don't see myself going back for this one.

Growler into a pint glass. Thanks to Deuane for giving me a fill off of a growler fresh from the brewery.

Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with 2 fingers of poofy brite-white head. Simmers down pretty quickly with a solid 1/4 finger of retention that sticks around and leaves a big latticework of lacing down the sides of the glass. The aroma is fresh, strong, lemon citrus and yeast that pretty much dominates the nose. A bit of spiciness does come out more as it warms, as down an underlying current of malt sweetness.

The taste is straight up lemon zest with a slight touch of tartness to it, as well as a yeasty feel that runs through the profile. Maybe some supportive malt sweetness under all of that citrus but that's about it. The mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with crisp and clean feel that still moves smoothly across the palette.

Another new brew from Pisgah and one that's refreshing, crisp, clean, and ... one-note? I would have honestly liked to have seen a little more going on with the aroma and flavor but there's no debating that this is some easy drinking stuff. Worth a look.

Always a pleasure when something new is ready from the tanks. I had been wanting to get up there for the last couple weeks to try this gem, but just could not get around to it. Finally made it up this afternoon and boy was I suprised! Served in a pint glass straight from the fridge. Consumed 09/03/2008.

The pour was breathtaking. To be honest one of the. if not the best looking Saison I have ever seen. Rich looking with a banana tinted light amber color to it. So hazy and cloudy you could not make out the other side of the glass. A large head, maybe three inches high came up off the top and settled down effortlessly into the glass providing me with copious side glass lace and an abundance of carbonation.

The aroma was very pleasant. Nice subtle notes of banana, clove, maybe a touch of peach. Lotso f bready malt tones in here, with the light fruit notes of the yeast providing a subtle, yet pronounced accent to it. The flavor was more of the same, clean would be a good word, with a quick hitting profile of light fruit that melded into some hay and light grass like flavors. Hint of peaches and pears, especially in the finish. Very nice body here, light to medium with a coating nature, but at the same time, very well carbonated and light enough to be easily sessionable. I was drawn to the tap here the most today I have to say.

Overall A very solid effort here. Very simple, clean, excellent summer beer. Nothing over the top just a nice, smooth drinking Saison. Light enough to enjoy on even the hottest of days
