Golden color with turbulent apparent carbonation and a huge mushroom thick head with eternal retention and leaving laces.
Aroma with notes of cloves, yeast, wheat malt and more bubblegum than banana.
Refreshing flavor with lots of bubblegum, cloves, spicy hops, some banana, mild tart pineapple and wheat-hay combo.
Light body with good carbonation.
Refreshing Weiss, not special, but better than I expected. The spicy hops were a pleasant surprise. It could have a bolder body.

Straight pour from 500ml pry-off bottle to a large wineglass. Freshness date of March 28, 2013 printed clearly in black ink along with some batch info in a little box on the back label, just above the barcode (“28/03/13 5621284 3”)

Appearance (4.0): This has a very nice, extremely tight, bone-white head that reaches three fingers with moderate speed but fades slowly, without leaving much lace—but what’s there is loose and sudsy. The body is a pale, hazy peach color, and very, very pretty. The head could stick a bit more, but the body’s gorgeous and the head’s not bad.

Smell (4.0): Nice fresh, dry hay scent mixed with a bright, underripe banana note with some modest, well-placed clove underneath. Rather, the clove is definitely there and it’s clear, but it’s not overly strong in any way like in a lot of hefes. This is nice and balanced, fragrant but could be a bit more.

Taste (4.0): Following the nose, this has a nice hay-like character on the palate and more underripe banana, but not as strongly as in the nose. The wheat malts shine through with a nice, tart character on the back end, which transitions to a grassy hop finish nicely. There’s some spice underneath all of this—mainly some clove and white pepper, neither of which predominates—which is kept in check by the underripe banana and tart wheat flavors. It becomes a bit fruitier and richer as it warms, while retaining that nice, wheaty character.

Mouthfeel (4.0): Actually pretty light and spritzy, this has a smooth carbonation which sticks around for a bit, a soft mouthfeel and light-side-of-medium body. This is a real quencher, but has enough character that it feels nice to take is slow, if you want to.

Overall (4.0): This is surprisingly nice, like a crisper version of the full-bodied hefes that come to find for this style. It doesn’t exactly “pop” in any particular sense, but it’s surprisingly balanced. I could see a lot of people finding this to be on the boring side, but I think if you take it slow and parse it out a little, you’ll find it’s actually well-crafted and balanced in every regard. A nice surprise!
