A bit of an "uncanny Valley" Beer for me, maybe due to my inexperience with French Beer.Very different from the Belgian Ambers.I sort-of liked it and sort-of didn't.

Opaque, barely lighter than cola but more reddish brown. rising carbonation is only visible right at the top but there's a huge soda 3 finger head.
Plasticy yeast, chocolate soda (when i used to put quik powder into sprite as a kid), nostril dilating yeast. Artificial strawberry. An odd smell.
A lot like my childhood recipe of chocolate soda, perhaps with a bit of coffee candy. Only a moderate sweetness. Certainly odd flavor for beer.
A hair astringent, otherwise like a mild soda.
An odd one, but certainly drinkable.

Pours cloudy chestnut brown, foamy tan head which settles to a nice covering.
Smells boozy, fruity, toasted.
On the palate, sweet malt dominates, rounded out by subtle hop bitterness. It tastes mildly nutty, with a slight tang that provokes the mouth to water. Carbonation is low, but lends a nice mouthfeel with the otherwise heavy flavor profile.
This is fine example of the French ambrée style, full of flavor, but nice and cloudy and a little rough around the edges. One of several fine offerings from this brewer. Definitely grab one if you can.

Beer bottle (33cl. 75cl.), tasted in 2003.
Appearance : red-amber color, with white foam head (not persistent).
Smell : yeast and spicy aromas
Taste and mouthfeel : sweet, flavours mixed roasted malts and spices.
Drinkability : a good beer in the style Belgian dark ale, ideal with cheese, or for cooking with beer.
Review translated from french 6-27-2008.
