pours a deep murky brown with slight amberish undertones and an off white head. very enticing, a quintessential color for a brown ale

caramel malt upfront followed by slight licorice and molasses undertones, slight roasted notes as well, faint piney hops

smooth maltyness with caramel upfront leading to more roasted and semi dry malt, licorice and bready molasses with slight ginger, faint chocolate notes, followed by a slightly piney and lemony hop balance at the end

smooth, balanced, textured, intricate, long finish that makes you want another sip very soon to take in more of the flavors

an excellent ale. the best brown ale i've had in recent memory by far. deep yet structured malt base with a spiced layer that lies just over the malt. A refreshingly light, lemony, and piney hop finish balances it all out to make for a delicious beer. I'll be looking for more.

Poured this into a pint glass and it poured a deep amber/mahogany with a thick frothy head and tight slow lacing.

The smell is not intense by any means but offered a light malty nose with floral and resiny tones.

The flavor was a soft, easy mixture of the hops' fruity and resiny character with brown sugar notes and a well balanced bitterness on the finish.

Medium bodied with mellow carbonation.

Nicely done.

Silver Moon Brewing chose to push the limits of an American Brown Ale and partially succeeded. Brown Eyes is significantly above style guidelines for both ABV and IBU's and the decision to do this has led to an interesting and enjoyable beer but a slight let down within its category.

Aroma:
A piney, overpowering fresh hop aroma greets you with an overly firm handshake and doesn't let go. I was unable to get past this hop aroma and find the other aromas I look forward to in a brown, such as chocolate, caramel and roast. It is, however, an enjoyable hop aroma. However, after the hop aroma dissipated a bit some of the malt came through. Mostly it smelled like strawberries and peaches with some dark fruit mixed in and a hard candy like smell. Good, but not what I want in a Brown.

Appearance:
This deep dark amber brew generates a nice frothy two finger sized light tan foam that is creamy in texture. Good stability but poor lacing. I could not detect any haze, nice clear beer.

Taste:
Delicious malt sweetness gives way to the floral hop finish. Along the way there is a small plum/dark fruit appearance and some chocolate flavors, that seem to play hide and seek with your taste buds. At first, the alcohol is well masked for a high ABV beer but as the beer warms the alcohol begins to take over. The alcohol and bitterness linger a bit too long in the finish of this medium to full bodied brew.

22oz

Appearance- Very dark, chocolaty brown color. Even head has a tint of brown. Good retention.

Smell- Nutty, malty, no hop smell, molasses(brewed with).

Taste- I could mistaken this for a porter! Brown ale my ace! Very thick and silky, burnt, nutty taste. Molasses, caramel and prune. Leaves kind of a burnt malt, after taste.

Drinkability- Goes down easy. Fair drinkability.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a pint glass at 48F.

A - A dark ruby brown, this had some significant head from a quick pour. The foam sticks around nicely and has a pillowy appearance. Moderate lacing.

S - I definitely catch the burnt caramel and molasses qualities, but they are overpowered by the floral hoppiness. Hmm, thats different for the style - let's taste it.

T - Starts off with a strong malty flavor that is quite sweet. Lots of caramel here. Very quickly transitions to bitter floral hops, and I have to say the hops overpower at this point and the bitterness lingers. Just a bit of nuttiness, but the hops are the focal point by far. Not what I was expecting...

M - Medium bodied with above average carbonation. Doesn't really stand out, good or bad.

D - Well, for me this didn't quite work. The hops seem to overtake any balance this beer would have had, and the alcohol definitely is noticeable in the flavor profile. Somewhat disappointing, but I can respect them for trying something different for the style.
