Dagger Dark Lager is a tasty example of the Schwarzbier style. It's sessionable AND has flavor. When poured into a glass it's attractive to look at. It comes up a little short on taste just because the middle doesn't deliver much.
Each sniff reveals new aromas. Some roast and faint bakers chocolate hit me first. Light coffee too. As it warms a slight caramel sweetness becomes apparent. Hops do not contribute much as per style.
This is an attractive brew. Two fingers of tan foam, maybe a little more, cap a very dark brown, almost black brew. Only when held up to the light do deep ruby colors peek around the edges. No noticeable haze.
This light bodied brew greets you with subtle chocolate and a definite roast kick up front. These fade as we head into the middle of the flavor and this is the beer's one weak spot. Then a subtle and appetizing smoke flavor kicks in helping you forget the lackluster and a tad watery middle. Dagger finishes clean and though it doesn't leave you with much it is refreshing.

On draught at the Bier Stein, served in a tall Ayinger mug, Dagger is a dark brown with a creamy off-white head that leaves foamy lace.
Smell is a not too strong, as it opens you get some sweeter bready malt, caramel and fennel.
Taste is nice, satisfying flavor but clean and sessionable. Toasty malt and chocolate, a bit nutty, a hint of light roasted coffee, bittersweet.
Mouthfeel is really carbonated, big foam when I even lightly swish it in my mouth, but there's a softness to it in spite of the dry finish. Medium light bodied.
Drinkability is good, a nice Schwartz, I dig the fairly full, complex flavor that still keeps it light enough to quaff liberally.
