On tap. Poured an opaque, jet-black color with a small, tan head of foam. It smelled sweet and boozy. Lots of sweet chocolate, mild bourbon notes and some vanilla.

Unknown vintage; drank 11/9/14 @ the Yarchives.

Brown/orange hue.

Big tan head; frothy lace.

Banana, booze & cream soda nose; odd for a stout!

Medium thick, creamy mouthfeel.

Banana & cream soda flavors up front; sweet caramel notes emerge as this warms. Belgian yeast notes Mark the finish. Totally unique & not very stout-like, but pretty damn good!

look: doesn't look like a stout ought to. I've brown Ales or black IPAs darker. Fairly dark ruby but not in stout territory.
Smell: nice sweet, lightly roasted bourbon.
Taste: much like the nose. Actually very nice beer IMO.

I wasn't expecting much with this beer, but was curious to give it a try as I have generally enjoyed their rum aged beer and this one was inexpensive. I wasn't disappointed (given my low expectations).

Beer pours a crisp brown - not clear, but certainly looked much thinner than I expected. No head to speak of. Smell was of bourbon and toasted malts - promising and pleasant. Taste was lots of bourbon with the roasted malt as an afterthought, not awful, but not really well balanced. The bourbon overpowered the beer and didn't let any of the other flavors come through. On top of that the stout was just not able handle the bourbon flavor - it was thin and light which did not mesh well with the punch of the bourbon. This beer couldn't handle 30 days of aging in bourbon barrels, so that doesn't say much for it.

Overall, given the price point, Im not sorry I bought it, it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't something I'd ever try again.

I recently had this stout while out with our family. Man I was so happy with the flavor which almost trended to a sweet finish. Sharing the bottle with the rest of the crew they also gave two thumbs up. The nose was delightfully full and very similar to the taste. Try this I think you will like it unless you like a sweeter finish.

"This Innis & Gunn Red Stout has been brewed using rye crystal malt to give it its deep ruby colour, Whitbread Golding hops complement the sweet biscuity malt with a soft hop bitterness. It was matured slowly over Bourbon oak chips which gives it its mellow vanilla flavour and a nice Bourbon kick." Brewed in the style of an English Stout aged over Bourbon Oak Chips, available in 20.3 fl oz. bottles and on rotating draft.

Poured from a 20.3 oz. bottle to a snifter glass.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy creamy foam head of a medium tan color over a clear deep brown body with red highlights and light, lively carbonation. Retention is good and lacing is light and tiered. 4

(Smell) Bourbon and oak character forward with bold bourbon sweetness and acidic, drying oak tannins in the nose top off a far more delicate malt base of little malt character, neither robustness or roast. The bourbon and oak character is very prevalent, and the stout base is conspicuously mute. 3

(Taste) Bourbon and oak again drives the flavor of this beer from the first sip to the last, frankly without much wiggle room for anything else to shine. The stout flavor comes through very subtly trailing the finish, merely as an afterthought, but as English styles go, is very simple, bordering bland and does not even remotely parallel the bourbon and oak character. An earthier, richer, more viscous or more heavily roasted stout base would have fared better with this level of bourbon, but in keeping with the traditional English Stout style, the bourbon and oak is just far too prevalent in this beer. 3

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly residual, smooth, medium dry. Carbonation is medium, generating a medium frothiness and a medium crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, medium/heavy overall. Balance is boozy with tannin acidity over sweetness and earthy bitterness. Alcohol presence is moderate, and there are no off characters. 3.5

(Overall) Truly a bourbon and oak lover's take on the stout. I was hoping for more of a ball game out of the stout, but English variations leave a bit to be desired, and layered underneath a dominating bourbon and oak flavor, laden with vanilla and big tannin flavors, this came surprisingly close to feeling like a watered-down bourbon shot for me. Continuing my barely-hit-or-really-far-off-the-mark-miss trend from Innis & Gunn, I will take my leave of absence from trying anything of theirs for a while. Dialing up the oak and spirits against shallow and unimpressive base beers that really don't justify barrel aging seems to be this brewery's forte. Thus, this may be a decent crossover beer if your go-to drink is a rich, sweet oaky bourbon, but the lack of balance really kills it for me. 3.25
