Bottle dated APR2014.

Poured into a porter glass.

1 finger light tan head disipated quickly leaving a layer of foam over a clear dark amber brew with a stead stream of bubbles refreshing the head.

Slight skink at first, but then oak and rum, malt and bread.

Good news, none of the skunk makes it to the flavor. Bright, refreshing, slightly sweet, flowery, a little hop bitter in the middle, nicely rounded in the aftertaste. I can taste the rum, maybe some raisins. It is a rather delightful, and distinct flavor.

The mouthfeel is a medium body with plenty of effervescence.

This is a fine brew. The oak rum barrel chips lend a distinctive and very desirable flavor.

A: Pours a deep ruby color with a fingers worth of head that fades down to a thin layer of bubbles after about a minute

S: Some sweet malts, cherry, oak, more dark fruits, and a hint of the rum make up for a majority of the nose. Some nice complexity going on

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with a bit of sweetness accompanied by the same cherry, oak, and dark fruits found in the nose. Also get some vanilla and a hint of rum that gives off some more fruitiness

M: Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation. A little on the prickly side

O: A very nice dessert beer with a good amount of sweetness balanced by the oak and fruitiness. A solid example of using spirit-soaked oak chips to add a nice depth and complexity to a beer. Can't complain about price, either

Deep amber color. Rapidly decaying just-off-white head.

Nice mix of rum and wood in the aroma, but it is not as assertive as I would have liked.

Sweetness up front, from both the Scotish Ale base, and the the rum barrel. The rum makes for nice accents, but the base beer seems weak in terms of taste.

Not as full a mouthfeel as I expected.

Decent but not great.

On tap into a pint glass

A - Beer is clear but is hard to see through due to the dark red tint (almost a mahogany). Head is somewhat creamy and leaves out at juster under a finger after it dissipates from the initial pour. Little carbonation is visible. 4/5

S - Very simplistic aroma profile featuring dark stone fruit, toffee (somewhat muted note), herbal hops, and a bit of woodiness. 3.5/5

T - This beer is somewhat on the sweet side of things but the flavor is very subdued. Flavors are more hints than anything. Vanilla, oak, toffee, dates, herbal hops and cereal grains all are discerned but they have to be searched for. No real bitterness to this beer. 3.5/5

M - Smooth and crisp with a bit of carbonation tickle. Medium bodied that is not drying in the slightest and there really is no lingering feel in the mouth after the swallow. 3.75/5

O - While I like to look for flavors in beer and attempt to figure out what the brewmaster used, when the entire profile this way the search is just exhausting. Very subdued beer in both aroma and flavor which allows it to be paired with just about any food, but it is hard to drink by itself and love the flavor. 3.5/5
