Tasting sample pours a ruby-tinged mahogany.
I definitely would choose this over their bourbon-barrel aged version, both currently offered on the regular here in TN. The nose shows a bit more restraint on the sloppy-sweet flavors that dominated the 'oak aged' Gunn- earthier aromas of baked orange, birch root, dark bread, cinnamon, brown sugar and baked apple.
The palate is a touch drier too with a dark bready/bran-like maltiness dominating the mouth and joined by more of those savory baked fruit and spice tones- yielding back to doughy dark bread on the moderately long finish with a hint of sunflower seeds.
Like I said, of the two Gunns offered on the regular here in TN, I'd much rather drink this Rum Aged version. A bit bigger alcohol suggests a more robust maltiness which was a great improvement along side the drier, spicier flavors.
