An aggressive pour yields only a short head that quickly dissipates, emitting a pleasant aroma of sugar cane and oak. The brew is a reddish, nutty-brown color and quite still, leaving little to no lacing or residual head. The very clear appearance and lack of bubbles makes it look almost like tea.
Despite the lack of visual carbonation, this Scottish beer has plenty of froth in the mouth, with a nice balance of malt and hops. A quick shot of sweetness at the first sip gives way to a complex, earthy flavor with a bitter kick in the middle and back palate, leaving a sweet trailer.
This was a nice pairing with a plate of spicy shrimp fried rice, which did not overpower the depth of flavor in this visually deceptive brew.
