11.2 ounce clear bottle

Pours medium almond amber, moderate tan head, leaves some fine scattered lace behind

Caramel malt nose with whispers of vanilla and honey

smooth, malty, overpriced and enjoyable ale. More caramel, more honey, more vanilla, with a hint of wood/smoke character just barely making itself felt.

Decent enough scottish ale, worth a try, but no bargain

Had to have this guy on July 4th.

A - Amber pour, with a creme colored foam top. Clarity is good. No lcaing of note.

S - Smells of vanilla, earthy hops, and rum. Are all their beers on rum casks?

T - Flavors of rum again are dominant. Behind that, some vanilla bean, and brown sugar. Kinda wish the rum wasn't so forward.

M - After a glass of this I was done. Just found the rum taste was stuck in my mouth. I get that this is their intent, but I didn't find it so drinkable.

O - Not bad, and I'm sure those that like I&G will appreciate it. Butnot my favorite in a scotch ale.

Initially not much to look at. Clear caramel color with a small head that fades quickly and not much lace. Smell is lovely with lots of sweet malt and caramel, along with a big fruity bouquet of fruitcake and yeasty dinner rolls. A touch of fusel alcohol and an herbal hop presence. Tastes great! Scotch ale with a huge portion of fruits. Big toasted caramel malt core with lightly scorched caramel notes. Cherries and vanilla, lovely oak and lightly bitter hops. A drying astringent quality that makes this one go down like soda pop. Feel is smooth and lightly carbonated. Supple over the tongue with super drinkability. This is a great brew with a great overall character.

clear orange glow with a finger of sticky off white head. Extremely malty and woody on the nose. Vanilla and oak with sweet toffee and caramel covered apples on the nose.

Smooth velvety almost wine like mouthfeel. Close to flat. Flavors that are on the nose all blend well together into one concise sip over the tongue with the oak being the star of the show and a little fruit twang on the back of the tongue. Sweet but with a clean oaky/spicy finish that isn't overwhelming. Concise, complex and flavorful. Pretty good. Not sure how I feel about the scotts brewing a beer for an american holiday but at least it came out good.

Pours dark amber with a small head.
Nose shows classic I&G vanilla oak, toffee, caramel and faint spicy notes. Pretty enticing.
Coconut and vanilla stand out as flavours, with sweet caramel following. The base beer feels a little weak.
Body feels a bit light on.
A little to sweet, gets cloying, but nice oak characters throughout.

Split into two tumblers at the Independence Tap. Sadly very little foam, fizzed up like soda, then there was absolutely no head. Tawny reddish copper color, pretty nice clarity.

Slight woody and sweet gingersnap aromas, cola.

Bitter and woody, dark toasted malts, caramelized sugars. Savory and relatively tasty, though it feels like flat cola in the mouth. Abv is fairly well obscured. Innis & Gunn should look into force carbing their exceedingly watery brews. Tasted alright, though it could use some improvement in the body/mouthfeel department.

11.2 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a clear orange/amber color with about a half inch off-white head that didn't stick around for too long. Not much lacing at all. The brew smells like caramel malt, apples, vanilla and a bit of nuts. Taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like caramel malt, apples, oak, vanilla, and a little bit of butterscotch. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and smooth with moderate carbonation. I think it's a decent enough overall brew.

Appearance: tan, caramel appearance. Wispy off white head. Clear, but lots of bubbles.
Smell: frankly, not distinguishable from other Innis and gunn in any significant way. Not bad in and of itself. Kind of a barrel aged "light", a pleasant mix of candy, oak, and malt.
Taste: Much like the nose. Pleasant, understated.
Overall: nice brew. Very cool that the brewers did this our Independence Day. Thanks fellas.

On tap at Kickbacks in Jax. Poured into a Unibroue tulip. Off-white head with good retention. Oily, soapy lacing sticks to the glass. Body is dark copper in color. Aroma consists of sweet molasses, slight plantain and maybe brown sugar. Taste is mildly sweet with caramel malts, no bitterness and no alcohol. Not terribly exciting but certainly not bad at all.

I picked up a bottle of Innis & Gunn's Independence Day 2912 for $2.69 at The Lager Mill. I have been pretty impressed with this brewery and when I say that they made a beer for Independence day I figured I should try it, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date 2012 vintage. Poured from a clear 11.2oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label is just about the same as their others, but with a blue background, it looks ok. It poured a nice amber color that took on and amber/copper almost caramel like color when held to the light with three fingers worth of fluffy white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and left some patchy lacing. This is a very good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with tons of sweet malts that impart some toffee aromas with brown sugar and caramel sticking out the most giving the aroma a high amount of sweetness and there is also a light nutty aroma. Next comes some buttery aromas and some light vanilla and oak aromas. Towards the end I get a lighter amount of noticeable hops that mainly impart an earthy aroma with a slight spicy hop aroma. The aroma is nice, but I wish that the barrel showed up a little more and the it wasn't so sweet, still a nice aroma though.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and starts the same with loads of malts that have a high amount of medium sweetness and impart lots of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar flavors. Next comes some barrel flavors that stick out a little more then they did in the aroma and impart some nice oak and vanilla flavors. After that I get a little more sweetness then comes the hops which impart some earthy and slightly spicy flavors with a lighter amount of medium bitterness with a sweet and barrel like aftertaste. I like the taste of this beer, the hops were a nice addition, but I feel like the flavors didn't come together as well as they could have, still pretty solid though.

M- Pretty smooth, a little chewy, a little sticky, on the lighter side of being medium bodied, with a good amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is nice, but it's not as good as some of their other beers, it felt a little watery.

Overall I thought that this was a good beer and an above average example of the style, there are some nice added touches to this beer that keep it from being mediocre. This beer had good drinkability, it went down smoother then expected and the flavor held my attention, but the added sweetness hurts it a little, I might be able to drink two if the sweetness doesn't get to me. What I liked most about this beer was the appearance and the noticeable amount of hops, this beer looked damn good and the added hop aspect helped balance this beer out a little. What I liked least about this beer was the higher amount of sweetness and I thought the barrel aspect could show up a little more, but the high sweetness was my biggest complaint, it seems much sweeter then their other beers. I don't think I would buy this beer again, it's pretty rare so I don't think I'll see it again, and there's a few other beers from this brewery that I would rather have, but I do recommend giving it a try. All in All this was a solid beer, but lacked that special something that brings everything together and makes it cohesive, I liked it but I would rather have their other beers I have tried, it's a solid but I don't think it's that memorable. I like this one slightly less then the original..
