Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $5 or so

Appearance - Brown colour with a large size beige coloured head. It's too dark to see the carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 4-5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Grains, dark fruits?, malts

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste a smokiness, a bit of wood, caramel, and malts. There is also some dark fruit flavour and a hint of vanilla.

Overall - Probably not worth the price tag, but this is a pleasant tasting brew. Perhaps something that would work well to introduce others to craft beer. None of the flavours are very pronounced.

330 ml bottle into snifter, best before 9/2014. Moderate gusher upon opening. Pours crystal clear deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, raisin, molasses, brown bread, oak, vanilla, light clove, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of dark/bready malt, oak, and molasses notes; with solid strength and complexity. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, brown bread, raisin, oak, vanilla, light clove, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Minimal earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, brown bread, oak, vanilla, light clove, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice balance and solid complexity of dark/bready malt, oak, and molasses flavors; with a good oak/malt flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and fairly creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice brown porter style. Good balance and solid complexity of dark/bready malt, oak, and molasses flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

330ml Bottle as a Christmas gift:
Caramel with a 1cm beige head that is creamy & holds quite well.

Sweet with some caramel, toffee and various malts along with hints of treacle and some light vanilla. Dark fruits and sugar & some spice feature as well.

Sweet treacle and some bitterness along with it, there is some vanilla & butterscotch with a slight bit of alcohol & fruits too. I could detect some banana and toffee with some earthy malts on top of that. It is definitely an interesting tasting beer and one that goes down well.

Smooth with a light medium body and a sweetness through with strong carbonation. The beer has touches of bitterness towards the end with the finish a dry and crisp one.

Quite a good Innis & Gunn offering, a good combination of sweetness and slightly darker malts coming through, the only real downside was that the nose could have done with being a little stronger although it wasn't weak or bland.

Poured from the clear bottle into an English pint glass. A dark brown porter with a peachy orange tint, interesting look. Light beige foam, perhaps an inch deep. Smells like caramel toffee, vanilla, and oak, the classic Innis & Gunn aroma albeit darker and with a more prominent earthy hop bitterness and some light roasted notes. Palate is similar, ample toffee sweetness, a light cola-like spice, molasses, faint chocolate, red berry. The oaky tannic woodiness that is more obvious in brews like Innis & Gunn Original scottish ale is also present here but more subdued, and the bitterness from the molasses manages to reign in the usual sweet maltiness that pervades this brewer's ales. Just a shade thicker than thin-bodied to my palate, highly carbonated and finishes quite dry, bitter with echoes of roasted coffee bean and wood. Dries out as you go, becoming more woody and tannic near the end of a bottle. Not bad. I like the bitterness the molasses imparts. I do prefer more typical porters.
