Appearance: A pinky's worth of head that offers a slight degree of retention and lacing accents a coppery body that boasts ample carbonation.

Smell: Caramel malt and oak dominate the nose, with hints of figs and apricots hidden amongst the malt. Warming really helps to bring the smell out.

Taste: I've never had a beer make me say, this tastes like wine until now. To be fair, a strong vanilla and oak backed malt starts out the beer, but then as you drink it, it seems to unlock a figgy, oaked white wine aspect which many here seem to identify as Sherry. In either case it takes over at that point and ends there too.

Mouthfeel: A very crisp beer, as there is a slight acidic cleanse that hits the end of the beer that does a fine job of cleansing the palette. The carbonation is a little thin, but it works for this one I think given it's wine like taste.

Drinkability: It's an easy drinker, and really seems to take from white wine once again in that regard. Refreshing, but great alone and doesn't need a meal to go with it like so many reds. It's high class though, and really apart from the malt, it doesn't really have a lot of beer aspects.

Final Thoughts: All in all a good experience, but I wouldn't call it earth shattering by any means. I mean, it's a beer that drinks like white desert wine, with a reasonable amount of booze to it. All in all, it was interesting to try, and certainly I'd have it again if offered, but the price per bottle is a little bit too steep for me.

As a side note, part of me can't help but feel that the pursuit of the beer isn't what made this brew come about, but that a distillery wanted to try an Oloroso barrel aged with beer to come up with a new kind of scotch. If so, I'd be interested to see what came of that result.

A most excellent of ales I have tried from Innis and Gunn. Barring the little paper description, this beer pours a clear light amber with a quickly diminishing white head. Nose is very soft, light malts, raisins, caramel, slight herbal notes. The taste is exceptional in my humble opinion. Soft caramel malts dance to the front, light fresh grape flavor, lightly tart, with a very light hop bitterness on the back. VERY balanced, and the alcohol UMPH is quite a nice surprise. HIGHLY drinkable and has a nice clean finish and caramel/grape aftertaste that is both pleasing and elegant. Lightly carbonated and full of flavor, this ale has a lot of depth with warmth and tons of character beyond a standard Scottish profile. CHEERS!

A- Pours a dark coppery color, and is very clear. The head is less than impressive, starting out less than one finger in thickness, and giving me a quick disappearing act, settling itself into a very thin patchwork of foam. There also appears to be a bold carbonation in this beer, with several column of bristly looking bubbles rising rapidly to the top. The lacing is also not very well defined, as there are only a few small spheres of oily looking head sticking to the side of my glass.

S- There is a very sticky, sweet smell that beholds the overall aroma profile. There is a medley of smells happening here...plenty of toffee and brown sugar, and a distinct nuttiness that reminds me very closely of peanut brittle. Dried dark fruit aromas are present as well, such as chocolate covered raisins, prunes and/or plums. The aroma profile lingers and leaves a heavy note in the immediate air. The longer I smell this, the more spice that shows up...cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of clove...almost like a pumpkin pie! What a complex aroma this beer provides....something that I find is somewhat rare, at least with the beers I review.

T- Wow, this is a surprisingly clean and mild tasting beer overall! The flavors mentioned in the smells, however, follow closely. I definitely taste the wine-y sweetness of the Oloroso Sherry, (something I do drink), along with brown sugar/caramel and sweet nuttiness. There doesn't seem to me to be any real hop presence on the palate, which is something I&G say is there....perhaps this is the 'balance', and why I'm finding this beer so clean on the finish!

M- This has a medium body to it, yet is so clean that it really tastes like a thin bodied brew. The carbonation leans towards the hard side in my opinion, helping to provide that refreshing taste I keep bringing up. It's very desert like and reminds me of a light rum/fruitcake but it doesn't have that heaviness I would have expected....that and the 7.4% alc/vol is virtually invisible in the taste and feel....great!

O- This is a highly deceiving beer, and I mean that in a good way. I don't know that this is my absolute favorite I&G brew, but it's so unique within their lineup. It has an incredible aroma profile, crisp and clean full flavors and does well on it's own, and I dare say this would be a great sweetening agent into a chili! Big thumbs up again...I recommend this one!
