A: Absolutely pitch black with no light shining through whatsoever when held to the light. Thick, dark head forms at first, then comes down to a thin ring. Looks very nice.

S: Lots of oats with a faint roastiness in the back. Average.

T: Tastes similar to smell, but much more intense. Some slight vanilla sweetness with a lot of oat flavor. A bit of oxidation as well, but I'm not sure of the age of the beer.

M: Mouthfeel is thick with good carbonation. Very good.

O: This beer is solid, but uninteresting.

Pours pitch black with a thin layer of brown head. Pretty big aroma here; oats, black strap molasses, and dark chocolate liqueur. The flavor has an added note of smoke to go along with big, fairly dry, chocolate flavors. The rich, creamy mouthfeel is the overall highlight to compliment the flavor. This is a big ol' oat stout that's worth trying at least once.

Had this on tap at the Draught House.

Pours dark brown with a cream-colored head. The aroma is roasted malts with some chocolate. The flavor is roasted malt, coffee, cream and some chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium to thick and is pretty creamy. Low carbonation.

Very dark brown color with a yellow rim. No head whatsoever despite being poured straight down the center of the glass. Wisps of dark tan bubbles.

Dark roast coffee, rich bitter dark chocolate, vanilla, toast and some light charcoal notes. There is a soft metallic note in the back of the nose of this beer. Overall, a mild nose for such a dark beer.

The alcohol in this beer creates a low heat that actually pushes the flavor through the palate - dark chocolate and a burnt malt flavor. Bitterness like cold coffee and a mild menthol feel from the alcohol.

The mouthfeel is a little on the thin side for such a big beer. Maybe a little over attenuated. The bitter lingers long after everything else. A little more carbonation would have helped lift things as well.

While certainly not a bad beer, just seemed to miss a little for me on several levels. A little more texture and a little richer and less astringent malt bill would push this beer up considerably. Overall, the alcohol is well integrated for such a big beer.

Thanks to brewerdan23 for sharing a pour of Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout from a 12 oz bottle.

Sticky sand colored foam on a dark, almost black beer. The nose was very chocolately with a fair bit of grain. The beer tasted like dusty cocoa powder with a little bit of licorice. The beer was surprisingly thin and with a dry finish. Not the best, but certainly a solid beer.

This is one of my staples...I love Independence Brewery and this is one of the better Texas stouts on the market in my opinion.

Poured into my DFH snifter, pours a pitch black motor oil color, but appears to be pretty medium bodied. A full off-white/tan head fills the glass and the recedes, leaving no lacing. Decent alcohol legs. Smell- dark chocolate, molasses, maybe some faint coffee. Taste- a roasty burnt bitter flavor at the back of the throat, rich carbonation, dark chocolate, and molasses. Mouthfeel- this one is fresh, has awesome thick and rich carbonation to it. Drinkability- for 8.5%, it is amazingly drinkable, with not much detected alcohol warmth. This is also 6$ for a 4 pack, which is an awesome price for a beer this good.

I appreciate trying more stuff from Texas that doesn't normally get up Northest. This one gre on me. Lots of roast, smoke, very lacey brown, chocolate.Lots of coffee in the finish. Not as thick as I would expect from the style.Very malty, and a good drinker.

Many thanks to lnashsig for this one. Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Deep seal brown liquid, thoroughly opaque with a thin dark camel ring of creamy foam. Sandy lacing subsides in arcs dancing around the clear panes of viscous tears. Great retention. A swirl brings the head back up though it lightens in color.

Roasted grain, oatmeal (rather than oats!), faint brown sugar, and perhaps a hint of diacetyl in the nose (faintly buttery but that can work for this style).

Dark roast malt yields a rich lasting flavor with some hints of coffee and a touch of cocoa emerges as the beer warms up. Faint char adds a bitter not mid-palate which leads into a dry crisp finish. Smooth vaguely nutty/oaty aftertaste. Very light esters and perhaps a hint of licorice or fennel are in the margins of the profile.

Medium-full bodied, lightly creamy, and well carbonated mouthfeel. Lightly astringent from the roast malt.

Quite drinkable thanks to the balance of flavors. Best served lightly chilled, this makes a great "breakfast stout" even without the direct addition of coffee.

Picked up a single from Whole Foods. It's basically a big roasty stout with a mild oatmeal edge. It's not overly thick and you could easily mistake it for a ~6% beer. There's a classic malty dark chocolate and java taste with a little dark bread crust taste and sweetness. Not a bad for a winter day, but also not a standout stout.

12 oz. bottle poured into a chalice.

Appearance - Pretty dark body with a substantial khaki head on. Almost overflowed my glass. Retention is phenomenal. Lacing is decent.

Smell - Sweet caramel smell first, followed by a chocolate roasted malt aroma. Not a strong smell and not really stout-smelling.

Taste - Very oatmeal-forward. So much oatmeal that a lot of the stout characteristics are lost. Nevertheless, there's a hint of coffee at the start and some milk chocolate in the middle. Lots of oatmeal in the finish and a hefty bitterness as well.

Mouthfeel - Doesn't taste as thick or heavy as I'd expect from 8.5%. High in carbonation, too. Really, it feels too light as a result. Bitter finish is never my favorite in a stout like this, either.

Overall - It's certainly not bad. I am enjoying it, but I wouldn't say it's anything special. The same stout that your local brewery is making right now.

Poured into my Fantome Tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a one finger tan head on top of a pitch black body. I love the way this beer looks!

Smell: Nice roasty smell, however it is overpowered by booziness.

Taste: I am getting to roast and some booze from the nose, however the booze is much more toned down in the taste, fortunately. I also get some nice bitterness and some chocolate notes.

Mouthfeel: While it i creamy which I like in this style, it is a little over carbonated which detracts a little.

Overall: Decent, didn't blow me out of the water but it was certainly solid.

Had this in a tulip. Independence is from my from my hometown and I decided I had to finally give this a try...

A: motor oil color and viscosity. Barely any head but what lingers is deep caramel.

S: char, smoke, heaps of malt

T: just how a stout should be: dry and bitter, yet smooth and amply sweet as well. Burnt sugar, black coffee, molasses and smoke. Warm alcohol, a dab of whiskey and dark chocolate on the finish.

M: Thick and creamy, syrupy even. Smooth.

D: simple and straightforward, a great example of a well balanced oatmeal stout.

Big thanks goes out to Exiled for sending me this one in a past trade as an extra! Served from bottle into a Spaten Optimator mug. Poured pitch black with a two finger brown head that subsided to a half finger slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, caramel, cream, and very subtle oat. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, cream, oatmeal, and alcohol on the followthrough. It had a heavy feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. A little much for outside in our current weather but still quite tasty. The flavor on this one is much better than the aroma in my opinion. But that wouldn't be saying too much in this case if I'm honest. Worth trying for sure but that is about it.

A- Dark black with brownish/mocha head which is sizable and remains for some time.

S- Cofee, chocolate and malt, the malt smell increasing as the beer warms.

T- Opens with a chocolatey taste, followed by a coffee/malt mix into a slightly alcohol-tasting finish.

M- Very smooth, especially for such a high alcohol content. Slightly dry finish.

O- Delicious. One of my favorites of the type.

Poured a nice engine oil black with a hearty chocolate head, a solid 2-3 fingers of head. Good bit of lacing, head dissipates about a min into the beer.

Roasted nuts, coffee, and bittersweet chocolate. Inviting, but a bit on the bitter side on the nose.

Hearty roasty flavors. Coffee, bitter chocolate, and rich fruity esters with a good bit of hops in the background. Well balanced!

Mild carbonation, no alcohol in the taste, solid and enjoyable beer.

On tap at Good Foods Awards in SF, poured into a plastic cup. Beer pours pitch black, with a finger of chocolate brown creamy head. Head retention is excellent, with half a finger sticking around for a while and leaving nice sheets of lacing. Some fine carbonation visible at the edge of the cup.

Nose is a good dark chocolate and roasted malt. A bit of oatmeal and grains, dark chocolate as well.

Taste is dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, and fruity roasted coffee. A bit of darker caramel middle of the tongue to sweeten things up. Light pine hop note as well. Medium finish with sweet malt, pine hops and dark chocolate lingering lightly.

Full body beer, silky and creamy as expected from an oatmeal stout. Very easy to drink. Glad the brewery brought this out to SF for the awards.

Appearance: Pours an inky black body with just over a finger of creamy tan head that leaves excellent sheets of lacing.

Aroma: Lots of dark roasted malt, black coffee, and bitter chocolate. Smells more like a Russian Imperial Stout than an Oatmeal Stout (that's certainly not a bad thing).

Flavor: Again, the dominant characteristics are dark-roasted malt, black coffee, and baker's chocolate. Very mild, bitter citrusy hops keep everything from being too sweet. There's mild alcohol throughout, but not too much. Dry and roasty malt in the finish.

Mouthfeel: A silky medium-full body with smooth medium-low carbonation and a drying finish. Hints of warmth from the alcohol throughout.

Drinkability: This is no sipper, but still requires a little time.

Verdict: A solid big American Stout, Convict Hill is probably my favorite beer from Independence. I'm looking forward to what these guys brew up next.

Pour was pleasantly thick, black, with a nice finger of light brown head that laces well.

Aroma is decent, bits of chocolate, a hint of espresso, roasted malts.

Creamy oatmeal, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, a dab of toffee and booze.

Feel is upper medium in body, but still sits heavy enough. Creamy texture, minimal coating and a cleaner finish. Carbonation is good.

Overall drinkability is good. A nice and tasty stout, slightly filling, but multiples wouldn't be too hard to put away.

Pours black with a light tan head.

Aroma features a ton of roasted malt a little sweet toffee and oats.

Flavor follows the nose. A short burst of initial toffee or chocolate sweetness followed by bitter roasted malts.

Mouthfeel nice and creamy with medium-low carbonation levels.

Pretty solid although nothing extra special. The roasted malts can be overpowering a times although the oatmeal gives it a good creamy texture.

Decided that I was going to go on a fridge cleaning for the next week before I need to take a break for a while. Went with this mixed sixer last night in an attempt to clean out some lighter fare. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this was consumed on 11/03/2010.

Another new one for me I decided I just had to include last night as a night cap. Really dark pour here with a rich dark chocolate color that gave way to a huge head of tan that was nearly three inches high at one point before settling down and leaving jus a ton of lacing up and down the sides of the glass. Really just could not have looked much better aside from maybe a touch darker.

Aroma of rich dark malts, cocoa, cookie dough, hints of maple and brown sugar, very nicely done, warming did lead some of it to fade however and left just a touch of light vanilla and chocolate hanging in the air. Really full feel here with a nice and smooth creamy touch to it that really worked very, very nicely. Rich vanilla, caramel, maple and brown sugar coming through now again with loads of milk chocolate and a light touch of coffee in the finish. Not too filling and no where near to light, this one worked out quite well I have to admit.

Overall a really solid shot here from them. Served as a well placed night cap and I really could have easily had another when I was done. Good job all around.

Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout has a fairly thin, tan head and a very dark brown appearance, with red highlights under light. A thin lacing sheen is left behind on the glass. The aroma is of sweet, dark-roasted barley malt, cream, coffee, and chocolate. The flavor is of all those, plus some astringency, coal, and a mellow hop bitterness across the sip. Mouthfeel is pretty heavy and viscous, and Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout finishes dry, sweet, and wonderful. This is a delicious beer, and the drinker just does not pick up the 8% abv. Overall, I rate it most excellent.

Bottle. Started at 54 degrees. Dark, dark brown to black, nice medium tan/camel foamy head with some staying power; smell is malt, slight oats. Something dark and well-roasted, as it warms. Taste is straight forward at first, nothing distinguished, no chocolate, sweetness or even heavy oats, but then gives way to a rising bitterness that just lays there persisting on the tongue. Maybe the beer is turning bad, but it smells ok. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea. I think it is just a burnt/bitter, slightly acidic taste. Mouthfeel is light to medium but finished thin on the tongue, giving way to that bitterness that lingers (oh yeah, I already covered that part). I could say something predictably silly, like, "it's a crime to recommend Convict Hill" but that would be pushing the rules and there are many raters who seem to like it well enough.

12 oz bottle fresh from the new release. Pours a light black color with a thin layer of light brown foam. Takes an aggressive pour to yield anything more than a finger and a half. Fades too quickly for an oaty stout, not much lace.

Nose has a milky coffee aspect that is nice along with some sweet malts and a touch of roast. Just a hint of cardboard, but not much...overall a pretty nice oatmeal stout nose and the high ABV is not detected in the smell.

Taste is pretty smooth with a nice balance between roast and sweetness. There are hints of Irish dry stout sourness that are not all that uncommon in an oatmeal stout, I kinda like it. It's a tad thin and does not have the viscous creamy feeling many of the best display, but this is easily and hands down the best beer from Independence, not even close. With all the new upstarts in Austin, they will need some firepower like this to compete.

Growler into pint glass

A: Opaque black with a short-lived tan head. I remember the head being better straight from the tap. Maybe my growler wasn't sealed properly.

S: Dark fruit, molasses, chocolate, coffee.

T/M: Bittersweet chocolate, raisins (?), more dark fruit, coffee, maybe molasses or brown sugar. Thick, chewy, viscous mouthfeel.

D: There's nothing wrong with it to take away from drinkability, but it is a bit strong for a session beer.

Had this in a bottle poured into a pint glass. Very dark, almost black with a small tan head and good lacing. A good stout with a slightly bitter aftertaste that grows on you. Can really taste the roasted malt and hops.
