This is a general store which is pretty good from that point, though I review it here from a beercentric viewpoint:
They have an ok craft beer selection. Had some reasonable DFH, Stone, and Unibroue offerings though I feel they could have considerably more quality (about half their total beer fridge is BMC, which is unfortunate). Their magazine selection is probably better than their beer selection.
If you're staying in Portland in the West end and need a close place to walk to buy some craft or general items, this would be one to consider. But I'd suggest going down to the Old Port for Downeast Beverage Co.

I work about a block away from this general store type establishment in downtown Portland. At least once a week I stop in for a sandwich and a snack or two. Recently while waiting for lunch I decided to take a gander at the beer selection. I expected to and did find the usual macro fare with a few Maine micros. Yet I was pleasantly surprised to find Anchor Steam, Liberty ale, and Porter. Joe's also carried Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout, and Nut Brown. Granted this is certainly not an overabundant selection that would rival Tully's or Downeast Beverage, but it is more diverse than Hannaford or Shaw's.
As the name imply's Joe's has a room dedicated to cigars and cigarettes. While this is not my area of expertise, I would recommend checking it out if you enjoy a good cigar.
Overall Joe's is a good place to pick up a six-pack if you are in the West End and aren't looking for anything extravagant, but want a little more choice than Hannaford or Shaw's offers.
