Got this in a Middle Ages mix pack from Wegmans in Cicero NY. Poured this mostly-cold 12oz bottle into a chilled pint glass.
This dark brown brew allows nearly zero light through and carries a stable foamy greyish-tan head. The smell is semi-sweet, toasty, smoke, caramel, cherries. The taste isn't as astringent or harsh as the level of smoke in the nose would imply. In the mouth it is a bit smoky, but rounded and smooth. Semi-sweet charred caramel, woody/ earthy feeling, finishes with vanilla and a bit of roasted malt. Mouthfeel is smooth, finishes dry, a bit under-carbonated.

while it's billed as an english porter, to me it tastes like a porter with a touch of scotch ale. one of my favorites

On tap at The Village Tavern in Geneseo, NY.
This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells like chocolatey malt, and some licorice.
I was feeling nostalgic and decided to roll the dice and try some Middle Ages again. This certainly isn’t the most magical porter you’re ever going to have, but it’s pretty solid. It’s a little bit sweet, and I’d want more bitterness or roastiness, but the chocolatey notes are tasty anyway.
This is very creamy, but light bodied, and a little bit thin.
This isn’t completely perfect, but I enjoyed it all the same.

As advertised a blend of Scottish ale and porter. Very fine dark pour with a rich khaki colored head and nice lacing. Taste is complex with notes of malt, sweet toffee, nutty toasted bread, and ending with light coffee. Also some appreciated lingering booziness.

Served on tap in a 16 oz (473 ml) nonic at The Evergreen in Syracuse, NY.
A: Pours a black color with a 1 finger, tan head, rim and cap retention, and gorgeous, somewhat limited lacing.
S: Aromas of black coffee, unsweetened cola, and birch.
T: Semidry. Flavors follow the nose; light bitterness. Solid balance.
M: Medium bodied with strong carbonation.
O: This is an impressively well crafted, authentic take on English Porter.

A- This beer pours with a most impressive looking head, which is 3-4 fingers thick in my tulip glass...WOW! The retention factor is very good with the thick, whipped, swiss cheese like head sticking around for a good long time, and eventually settles into a very thick half finger layer over top of the nectar. The color of the brew itself is of dark cola and chestnut hues in the background. As for lacing, it is thick and rich in appearance, with a heavy layer covering the sides of the glass....very nice looking indeed!
S- Dark dried fruits such as raisins, dates and/or prunes to start off with! There are other sweet notes of toffee/molasses, root beer syrup, enthralling toasty caramel sweet malt, bread, and yeast in the body and the finish is deep and Earthy....not much for any cleansing bitter aromas, but this is what I wanted out of this style!
T- The flavors follow the aromas well with heavy malt sweetness present, the dried fruits noted in the aromas following in the background, toffee sweetness, some nuttiness, again with the root beer character, toasty bread/yeast and hints of coffee near the end of the body and into the finish. The flavors linger ever so slightly before drifting off before the next big taste!
M/O- Medium bodied and as the appearance suggested, the carbonation is quite heavy, yet it is rather smooth on the palate! The flavors are full and rich, yet there isn't any one that overpowers any other....it's like a blend between a Scotch Ale and a Porter in taste and texture....makes a nice semi-sweet dessert beverage! This is highly drinkable and I would recommend this to anybody....another winning recipe from Middle Ages! Cheers!
