As always, I have been searching for Scotch Ales that live up to my benchmark McEwan's flavor and approach. Simple, yet so elusive...

Got this one on a whim in a trade from a suggestion. I was skeptical. Long story made shorter - when I got the beer I was in the middle of a self-imposed beer "break". The break was lifted today and I fridged up the bottle for tasting.

Poured into my Douglas thistle glass. Pours dark, cloudy. Beautiful. 2 finger head that stands up briefly.

Smell is a little Earthy - not overly inviting.

Taste is amazing. malty, cherries, mossy, like a glimpse of life on the Moors. (yes I know it's not about that, but let me live my dream) Sweet, dark fruit, but just that hint of Earth. (not peat, damn you) This is the taste that in my mind, I associate with McEwan's - Highlands, Lowlands, Yadda MacYadda. Burnt toffee, marmalade, etc.

Downed 22 Oz. of this while writing the review. Damn.

Complaints: Not many. A trifle thin. Could be a bit more "heavy" and a bit less "wee". I could go for more boozy. Yes. I said it. Thicker, more treacle.

Overall - this is the real deal. Very non-U.S. S.A. tasting. Very authentic, old world. Nice freaking job - Middle Ages. what else ya got?

A - dark brownish amber with a thick layer of dense, brownish, off white head that has decent retention

S - baked apples, peat, caramel

T - baked apples, caramel, some candy sugar, faint graininess, alcohol

M - medium to full bodied, well carbonated

This is a big bodied, full flavored Wee Heavy. The flavor is bold and balanced. The alcohol is present but tamed. My only disappointment was that there was a faint grainy note in the finish. Otherwise, this was a big, bold offering that is worth trying.

Poured into thistle glass. Slightly cloudy deep garnet with a small tan head. Smells of bourbon and alcohol, malt and sweetness. Taste is clean, sweet malt with a thick sweet boozy finish with crackery flavors hanging over. Delicious and dangerously drinkable.

Pours medium brown with a decent head up front. No retention, limited carbonation.

Nice dark fruit, boozy toffee and caramel, toasted grain in the nose.

Over-browned bread crust, burnt sugar, bruised fruit, some buttery toffee, some fruit notes, booze, bitterness. Lots going on here. All good. Alcohol comes thru and helps to cut the sweetness.

Fuller bodied, mouth coating.

Nice version of the style. A bit of an overbalanced beer, but it is because all of the flavors are super-strong. Worthy.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: deep, rich amber hue with tons of haze and two fingers of frothy tan foam. Just what I like to see.

Smell: rich malty aroma with lots of breadiness and plenty of fruity character on top. There is a hint of caramel and even some minor spiciness to round 'er out. Quite nice.

Taste: fruitier than the aroma, there is a lot of good raisin, date and cherry in here. It reminds me of an old ale or an English barleywine in some respects. There's plenty of bread and butterscotch in the flavor with the fruit. Really quite tasty.

Mouthfeel: tons of body with a great carbonation yield a highly satisfying creaminess. I love the effect here.

Overall: this is quite a wonderful beer. I wish it were more available in my area.
