Appearance: Lightly hazed, brown body with a nice coating layer of ivory-colored foam on top.

Smell: Bready, toasty malts with a hint of dark brown sugar. Light notes of fruit and earthy, herbaceous English-minded hops.

Taste: Pale malts with tastes of darkened bread crusts and biscuits. Light thriving taste of brown sugar for a touch of added sweetness. Faint fruitiness. Earthy, leafy hops with a medium-light bitterness. Finishes bitter, finishes drying.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-low carbonation.

Drinkability: Certainly more enjoyable than a trip across I-285 regardless of day or time. As with the Farmhouse Ale, I'm still stuck listening to the virtues of Eckhart Tolle from a plastered bar patron and getting further book recommendations. He suggests we visit the nearby bookstore Phoenix 'n' Dragon, which sounds more like a Chinese restaurant to me. In fact, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! He's an interesting character, but that's probably true of most of the patrons of the Phoenix 'n' Dragon.

On tap at the brewpub ... The only way to enjoy their beers, unfortunately. Not that the brewpub isn't exceptional; rather that the beer is worthy of wider distribution.

This "traditional English stlye ale brewed with four malts and four hops", arrived with a large creamy tan head that had exceptional durability. Moreover, the glass was mostly covered by creamy bubbles as the beer lowered. The beer is a dark reddish-brown; clea r and attractive.

Somewhat dank and earthy aroma, rather par for the course with an ESB, but not appreciated nonetheless.

Th e flavor is richer, i think, than usual in this style, with a slightly lower malt/hop ratio. In any case, there is a clear hop spiciness together with a rich malt base.

This turned out to be my favorite beer in the flight of five I had here on 9/17/09. The flavor profile is closer to the American ingrediants of a pale ale than to a British ESB. Both the smell and the flavor are quite earthy. The color of the brew is light brown (and cloudy). Nice lace. The finish features a bittering hop that has some staying power in the aftertaste. The balance is pleasant and would make it easy to keep ordering.

Pours an appetizing transparent mahogany with a fairly thick pale beige head. Aroma is malty with hints of cinnamon and a touch of hops. Flavor is malty with an undertone of spice and a little hop bitterness, satisfying if not complex. Texture is fairly smooth and nicely tingly and edgy. Definitely worth a try.
