Once after a Brainerd show at the Dane, I headed down to the Wisco with the band for $1 bottles of Leinie’s Original. Leinie’s Original is all I drink there.

For some reason we left the uber-libertarian bar for a few minutes and walked into the rotted out, old CC Riders house next door. The place was full of the Brainerd’s instruments and equipment and smelled strongly of raccoon dung. My allergies forced me to leave quickly and I waited for my friends out front for a few minutes.

Moments later, Brainerd’s huge and intimidating bassist came running out of the house wide eyed and screaming like a banshee. He pounced on me and tried to eat my cheek like it was double-quarter-pounder with cheese and he was a starving Ethiopian. After getting a few bites in and a growler’s worth of drool on my shoulder he released me, dropped his pants, and started chasing one of the wild dogs that had followed him out of the CC Rider house. We didn’t see him again that night.

This story is completely factual and an honest representation of a typical evening at the Wisco.

Oh, and I've heard the Fat Tire rumors too but haven't looked into them because I already have a steady black market supply of New Belgium beers. Wha ha ha ha...

I don't even know where to begin. How about the bartender? Short, biker-ish looking dude. When I asked what they had to offer, he easily rattled their entire selection, and gave a few suggestions based on my interests (I said I was looking for something not light or domestic). Ended up with a New Glarus Bock...nothing wrong with that.

I was a bit intimidated going in, and especially after seeing the bartender, but the crowd was nice, nothing to hectic. Darts and video games line the walls, providing the basic entertainment. Not a whole lot of seating, just a few barstools and small tables.

I don't remember even seeing any taps, but I'm sure they offer at least a couple, as some pint glasses were floating around, otherwise most everything else was in bottles. Even though I was a bit hungry, I didn't order any food. Kitchen consisted of a deep fryer and a flat grill behind the bar, I wouldn't expect too much to come out of that.

Overall, a pretty dimly lit and dank-ish bar. I have heard rumors that either this bar, or some other bar in the Willy St. area has bottles of Fat Tire available for purchase. Apparently the owner goes on trips frequently and comes back with several cases each time. Still haven't found it yet, but I will continue my search.
