It's hard to believe I've been going to Vineyards for about 10 years now. Only a few times a year but iin that time frame it has been remarkably consistent. Vineyards has been my go to spot when down in the market as it's generally not nearly as crowded, serves better beer that most places and I can actually hear what people are saying.

Vineyards is below the fish market restaurant, in the cellar. It's dimly lit, clean and very cozy. Small booths and tables are set back from the main bar and in an odd change of Canada, you are encouraged to buy your alcohol from the bar and bring it back to your seat. The barstaff members are usually fairly quiet but knowledgeable and polite if you have a question.

The majority of the beer that is sold is available at the LCBO with a significant markup. Emphasis is put on belgian styles but more recently I've seen IPA's taking up residence as well. There's typically only a few taps as the majority of beer is sold from the bottle.

Food is generally pretty good in terms of taste and value. Try their $12 fries which include a steak and side caesar salad. You can also order from the menu in the restaurant above.

It seems like someone was having a bad day at the bar, but this was unacceptable. I have edited this for a more thorough explanation but this is one place in Ottawa I will not be frequenting. Here's how this visit went down...

Well, we walked in on a cool early evening in May to what seemed like a nice place. We asked if there was a bar and the server said "yes, downstairs." However, when I asked if they had beer down there the server said she wasn't sure. Really? At the same time, another patron seemed to be upset with us because we came in from a different door from the one she came in. BAD omen...but that wasn't the issue. We walk downstairs to the bar and take a couple places on the end and sit down. I looked at the taps and picked up the beer list in front of me and made a quick attempt to peruse...BUT...not 2 seconds after picking it up the bartender actually PULLED THE BEER MENU OUT OF MY HAND! WTF?! I was dumfounded and mumbled in my amazement. He was obviously looking for conflict because he asked what I said, so I told him I was startled that someone would take something out of A CUSTOMER'S HAND WITH NO EXPLANATION. So he scolded me for "being aggressive." So y'know what? We left. Bugger on this joint...and by the way, the fish smelled raunchy.

Located in the cellar level Vineyards boasts an impressive selection of wines and an extensive, although not very varied, selection of beer. Offers many of the common offerings from Sam Adams, various Canadian brewers, a decent selection of Irish Stouts and Ales, and a few more obscure brews from around the world.

Menu is well organized offering both ABV for almost all beers as well as a brief description of the beer and/or its style for nearly every beer.

Service is friendly, although minimal and at times slow. But the food is quite good.

A nice "cozy" place to go with good atmosphere and good selection for craft brews one might not otherwise find in the area.

Like some of the other reviewer I have found this a good place to try world beers when in Ottawa. Also like other reviewers there have been times that the beer I wanted was not around, though they usually have something I have not tried befor.

I generally sit up at the bar and have found the staff to be very helpful. I have not tried the food, but people around me seemed to enjoy it. The wine selection is also good.

Located in the By-Town market area of the city which is full of other bars and eateries.

Impressive beer selection...to bad that a third of it isn't available! This place was recommended to me for it's great atmosphere and, especially, it's beer selection that takes you from one end of the globe to the other, offering brews you can't even pronounce without pointing at it. The service, well, if your not eating you serve yourself. Which in part isn't that bad but if it's your turn to order at your table and you have to come back 2, 3 times because nothing indicates the brews they don't have, this becomes a pain! So the review for the service would probably be different if we ate (!?!)
This is my fourth visit in 2 and a half years and I've noticed a small negligence on the beer selection issue.
Besides beer, a huge wine selection (never tried), good food (people look satisfied) and great music (live)!!!
Again, this somewhat "average" review reflects the BEER BAR part of this establishment and does not reflect the remaining WINE AND DINE part that I personnaly haven't tried.
