A 500ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2013. Acquired a while back from the York Wine & Beer shop. Described on the label as a traditional bitter; hopped with Saaz, Fuggles and Pilgrim.
Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear orange-amber hue with light carbonation. Yields a decent head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or two before disappearing. Aroma of caramel malt with hints of grass, a slight nuttiness, ale yeast and mild stewed hops. Not bad.
Tastes of caramel malt with a leafy bitter finish. Notes of caramel, grass/hay, a slightly toasty nuttiness, faint roasted grain, ale yeast and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, followed by a restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with spritzy carbonation and decent body. Mildly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of stewed leaves, faint nuttiness and caramel malt.
Pretty good and decidedly traditional. Looks OK, with an aroma and flavour of toasty caramel and stewed hops. Body is alright. Nicely balanced and very drinkable - I could imagine sinking a few of these down the pub. Worth sampling if you chance across it.
