They were to have brought some of these CANs to PA Flavor on Saturday but a miscommunication somewhere along the line left us all high and dry. Fortunately, I got a ride to Al's of Hampden later and scored a sixer of these for The CANQuest (TM).

From the CAN: "This German-style lager is a perennial favorite in the Sly Fox pubs and our brewers' go-to session beer. Craft brewed with imported German Pils malt and Saaz and Hallertauer hops, this golden beer is light-bodied with a gentle, dry finish."

I started the Crack and the whole top came off in my hand! Aaaaahhh! I CAN see into the CAN itself! This is not how The CANQuest operates and I am not sure that I like it. No Glug, but more of a Blorp!, like emptying a CAN of food into a bowl or dish. I had a brief finger of bone-white head, but it quickly dissipated. Color was a deep golden-yellow with NE-quality clarity. Nose had the characteristic honey-like sweetness of good, adjunct-free lager. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was unmistakably lager with a light grassiness, thanks to the hops. Finish was mild, semi-sweet, very unobtrusive. Given its relatively low ABV and unimposing flavor, I CAN see why people would flock to this. It is certainly appropriate for the cooler and the CAN is a novelty, but I hope that it is not a coming trend.

Sly Fox Brewing Company
Helles Golden Lager

Appearance: 12 oz pull tab can. Pours a bright golden color with a chill haze. White head forms and leaves some lace. Retention is average.

Smell: Bread, biscuit, crackers and some stewed floral, grassy hops. Pilsner malt is apparent right away, This beer has a strong aroma.

Taste: Cakey pilsner malts, bread and lemony citrus are the big flavors. Hops are herbal, spicy, leafy, and have soft citrus notes. Finishes with a tang of yeast and alpha acids, bitterness is pretty pronounced for 18 IBU.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, well carbonated. Citrus oil and yeast tang stick to the palate,

Overall: A refreshing beverage for the summer, I enjoyed the lemon citrus notes along with the bready pilsner malts. Makes for a good canned option, and it uses a vintage pull tab design which makes for a smooth pour. Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager makes for a great warm weather, lighter craft option.

On draft at Kodiak's, Farmingdale, New York.

Poured a medium straw hue with a wispy white head. There was no retention and lacing. I attribute this to the pour and not the beer though.

The smell featured a light grainy malt and cleansing noble hop spice.

The taste was well balanced with a tight doughy malt and balancing noble hop spice.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style

Overall a tasty beer and good rendition of the style.

Mine is listed as 4.9% Poured into a pint glass.

A - Very cool can tabs you can open the top completely up for easy chugging. In the glass a nice clear bright yellow with a 1/2 inch of sticky head that pulls back to a great lace ring.
S - German sweet malts, some hops, a touch of corn. Smells ok.
T - Well I am not blown away but it taste decent enough.Mostly sweet malts, little skunk, and hops with a touch of lemon.
M - Light and crisp. Easy to drink.

Overall another great beer from Sly Fox but I have had better reps of the style. Goes down easy though with session able qualities.

Many thanks to woodychandler for providing this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can, and I am not really felling this cup/can design. Has a golden color with a 1 inch head. Smell is mild, a bit of malts. Taste is crisp, malts, some hops, refreshing and easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a good session beer.

Tasted on-tap 9/25/06 at Tria Cafe in Philadelphia, PA. -- Advertised as "Sly Fox French Creek Helles" - 4.6%.

Straw colored with a low white head. A light grainy aroma with almost a slight adjunct character. Similar in flavor, grain and light adjuncts, with just enough hops to balance. Fairly light bodied but has a decent dry finish.

A light Helles but not one I'd likely go back to.

Per Sly Fox website: 11.5 OG. 18 IBUs. 4.9% ABV
Imported German Pils and Carmel malt.
Saaz and Hallertauer hops.
Bronze Medal, GABF 2002.

Transparent golden yellow with a thick creamy white head. The nose is lightly toasted grain with a touch of dough malt balanced by a fairly assertive citric hop in the back with a grassy, earthy grain lingering in the back. The flavor has a more assertive grain flavor, light notes of dough with a strong citric bitterness. There is a lightly floral and grassy hop note accompanied by some tangy rye like grain in the finish. Really light, fluffy, and creamy feel with a medium syrupy body and crisp assertive carbonation. The beer is balanced and smooth, light and crisp. Nice stuff, stronger on the grain side than I love but still very enjoyable.

A can with a peel-off tab-top. Spilled into a shaker pint. Mine says 'Newcastle Brown Ale' on it

Pours a light yellow-gold with a few sparse crusty black sediment clumps stuck in the foam. Light haziness doesn't interfere much with clarity. The head peaked at about a half-inch and was short-lived. Looks light and summery.

Grassy smells with some light mustiness and pale grains without toast. Lightly fruity, but absent of description. Maybe some hoppy citrus, but the hops are rather tame. Some floral note wants to push through. Really delectable in the malt department, I must say.

Light and lagery with a push of bitterness in the finish. Almost gulps down with a spiciness. Decent carbonation helps to that effect. Pale grassy malts that are a little too musty to classify as being like a pilsner. Tasty German flair screams 'Reinheitsgebot'. Simple barley malting with a classic Euro hop profile that snipes with notes of pithy lemon, wheatgrass, and mint. Malts transfrom from the introductory musty to some middle-late husky. Tastes very fresh. Body-wise, the beer isn't sullen. Has some greasy viscosity that works to please.

A modest craft example of a Helles Lager. Decent, if not better than decent. A sure-shot buy of the 'I-need-a-sixer-of-a-tasty-and-easy-craft-lager-in-can-format' ilk. No problem to polish off three or four in a single session. Haven't tried drinking from the can, yet; 'yet' being the operative word here.

Poured from 12 oz can into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Best by 04/22/14 on bottom of can. Purchased at Kroger (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Beautiful clear straw-gold with ample 1-finger white big-bubbled head with decente retention and a nice cap of lacing.

S: Plenty of Munich and pilsner malt graininess with a good balance of grassy, noble hoppiness.

T: Clean with only a slight minerally bit in the aftertaste. Otherwise is straight grainy maltiness with a light hand of noble hopping. Really a fine tasting helles lager for sure. If they could punch out the light sulfur-aspirin-mineral character in the finish, this would be a definite summer go to brew. Still, this is an excellent, clean lager with no other faults.

M: Very crisp and easy to drink with a fairly light-handed carbonation to enhance the light-medium body and mouthfeel.

O: Sly Fox Golden Lager is a stellar lager with just the right mix of pilsner and Munich graininess with noble hopping -- they have made an outstanding brew here.

Pale gold with a steady stream of bubbles up the middle that keeps a white film.
Saltines, greasy lemon and cut hay on a faint nose.
Pizza crust, more lemon sorbet and some mild Noble bite.
Faint grassy finish and drying linger.
Crisp, light, slight chew.

The fancy new can is an odd one - disconcerting to see the bottom of your beer from above with no head.
Out of a glass this is an average session lager, with all the relevant notes fairly muted.
Not a dud, but below par for SF.
