First had: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA

Golden-yellow pour, slightly hazy, with a finger or so of fluffy white head that retained well and left a bit of lacing on the glass. Aroma of pale malt sweetness, citrus, spicy yeast. Similar taste, malt sweetness, rock candy, citrus notes, grass, yeast, herbal hops, moderate bitterness, slightly medicinal. Light-medium body, easily drinkable, but falls short overall for the style.

Thin head on a clear golden body with nice lacing. Aroma contains candied fruit, mostly orange and Belgian yeast. Flavor is pretty much your generic saison with spicy Belgian yeast, clove, corriander, banana citrus and light malt mustiness. Medium to light body and moderate carbonation. A very standard but still good saison.

Re-rate summer of 2012 from tap at Sly Fox Brewery

Pours clear golden yellow with thin slightly off white head. The nose has hints of yeast, notes of lemon and clove with a faint bit of banana and candied sugar. The taste is overly sweet and sugary, a little thin in the back. Candied lemon and banana with just a touch of spice to it but not enough to balance. light body, thin, highly carbonated.

A-pours a golden straw colored head with a hint of haze and a thin bubbly white head.

S-yeast up front, light lemon and orange peel notes, oily aroma, floral herbs, corriander.

T-yeasty lemon, orange peel, corriander, notes of floral grassy herbs, light bitterness in back. very simple and straight forward.

M-grainy feel in a good way with a syrupy texture and nice carbonation to back it up with a lightly dry finish.

D-very easy drinker, very straight forward beer, not a lot happening here but still a great summer drink.

Had on tap at the brewery

Appearance: minimal head, clear, gold in color,

Smell: honey, light toasted malt, grass, and earth

Taste: follows the nose

Mouthfeel: is bitter but on the sweeter end for the style, light bodied with minimal carbonation, dry.

Drinkability: This one I find to be on the sweet side for the style, but still very good. I would have two or three of these. I do like the taste of the malts in this one.

Recently tried this on tap, and was really impressed. An outstanding Saison.

Apperance a light gold, which poured a nice head which has some staying power.

Smell was crisp and clean, with the Belgium Sasion yeast coming through strongly and subtle hints of malt, apples, maybe apricot.

Taste started with a light malt character heavily influenced by the yeast. Complex and subtle fruit flavors start to take over and the finishes very crisply. Over all and great taste start to finish.

Mouthfeel was a little lighter than expected but very nice, and for a Saison I found this very drinkable.

A winner in my opinion.

(From notes)

A - Nice half-finger of a tighly packed white head; decent staying power and a shimmer of lacing. Clear gold color.

S - Sweetish malts; whisps of yeastiness; touch earthy, but not funky by any means. Aligned with the style

T - Definitely saison qualities on all fronts; yeasty; touch of spice, but not much; pretty sweet for the style.

M - Thinnish, but not too thin. Subtle carbonation, and just a bit slick.

D - Very good drinkability. Nice rounded saison qualities, but not terribly interesting. Quaffable nonetheless, and fairly refreshing.

Overall, would have expected a bit more snap and tartness to balance out the sweeter nature of the brew. That being said, it's a good take on the style. Worth checking out, though there are better examples from the US out there.

On tap at Windber Hotel, Windber PA.

Appearance: Light yellow pilsnerish color. No head to speak of. A little disappointing.

Smell: upfront sweet fruit and malt.

Taste: Fruity with that funky barnhouse taste. Sweeter than I think it should be. Should have more carbonation though is still quite tasty.

Overall: could have another easily and if available on tap more frequently, would drink all the time.

GABF Weekend '08:

A decent Saison that is quite good with one sip and problematic with the next. The beer begins with a standard light yellow color, mild haze, loosely knit head formation that retained and laced very well. Aromas of malt sweetness and phenolic spiciness are all over the place. Fruity and spicy in the flavors with pears, apples, and orange peel taking the lead. Bready wheat malts set the tone for a lot of peppery, clovey character. Unfortunately the phenols also bring out some plastic, band-aid notes that are distacting. Mild hopping rates do little to offset the candy-like sweetness. The beer could use more musty, funky character to get closer to the preferred Belgian brands. Light, airy, and sweet to the feel, with a dry, warming, medicinal finish. A good beer that could show some improvement.

On-Tap...

A- Straw colored grainy yellow beer. Nice lacing! White frothy head, quickly dissipating.

S- Really grainy, wheaty, and earthy. This was a very natural smelling brew with a really minor hop detection in the nose.

T- Really sweet and sugary. Very nice blend of candy and sugar with a citric earthy and grassy undertone. This beer had a medicinal quality to it that rounded the brew out nicely.

M- Very light bodied. Some warming as it went down, overall pleasant.

D- A very fine beer here that is as drinkable as it gets for a saison. Nothing cloying, nothing too sweet. Excellent!

Had this one at Ommegang Belgian fest '07 for the first time and found it today at my local Key Foods.

Appearance is stellar. Beautiful straw color with a frothy, rocky head. Mounds of white peaks. Rivals Duvel.

Aroma reveals fresh cut grass and weeds, honeysuckle and lemongrass with a sweet backbone.

Taste is sweeter malts up front with dry hops finishing.

Soft and creamy in mouthfeel. Tight carbonation.

Really exceptional beer with exceptional drinkablilty. Great for summer as it should be.

On-tap at Zeno's in State College, PA... now smoke-free!
Slightly hazy light amber-gold with a medium-large, frothy, white head that very slowly diminishes. Smell is spicy, supported a fairly solid malt backbone. The taste follows suit, with spice and some fruit being most notable, but it's milder and more musty than the nose suggests. Pepper, banana, coriander, lemon. Bitter grapefruit rind on the finish. It has a medium body, bitter, dry mouthfeel, and moderate carbonation. Overall, it was pretty good, something I'd like to have again.

A - slightly cloudy straw / golden yellow in color, thick white head.
S - light biscuit malts, a touch of funky yeast and mild spice.
T - follows the aroma but leaning towards the milds side of the style.
M - medium bodied, nicely carbonated and crips
D - just funky enough to stand out but not enough to crack my top saisons list.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 1/27/2014. Pours lightly hazy bright golden color with a 2-3 finger dense and rocky white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big apple skin, pear, lemon zest, grape, grass, straw, floral, clove, light honey, bread, funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of fruity/spicy/funky yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of big pear, apple, lemon zest, pepper, clove, grape, light honey, grass, straw, bread, light funk, floral, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of light fruits, grass, straw, clove, pepper, floral, funk, light honey, bread, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome balance and complexity of fruity/spicy/funky yeast flavors; with a good malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and crisp mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent saison style! All around excellent balance and complexity of yeast ester flavors with moderate malt balance; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Corked & caged bottle poured into large tulip for review. Cork came out very easy. No audible pop. Appeared cloudy gold with tall, rocky white head. Okay carbonation. Smells mostly lemon with bready wheat. Tastes similar with faint saison yeast character. Tastes medium light & refreshing. Overall, a solid beer. Would like to see more Belgian saison characteristics.

Poured into a snifter. Label says 5/24/14.

A- Pours a medium golden color with a 1/4 inch white head that doesn't retain long before shrinking to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and light, bubbly surface foam. Slippery non-stick lacing.

S- Sweet wheat smell with plenty of saison yeast aroma. Notes of honey, coriander and a hint of rosemary. Very floral.

T- Flavor is somewhat neutral. A little wheat here, a touch of yeast there plus some very faint spice and a mild alcohol kick. Pretty average all the way around and not much to say.

M- Also a letdown. Medium-low carbonation is nowhere near where I like it to be for this style. Semi-watery feel.

O- I don't know if I just have too high of standards for saisons now that I've had some of the best (Avec Les Bons Voeux, Saison Rue, etc.) but this one just did not do it for me. This is only the second Sly Fox beer I've had, the other being Incubus and I remember enjoying it very much. Shame this wasn't as good.

Huge thanks to Centennial for sending this one my way. Poured into a tulip. This one pours a slightly hazy golden straw color with three fingers of fluffy white head. Thick gobs of sticky lace.

Reminds me somewhat of a cider. Apples in the aroma with a sharp tart edge. The pallet gives of notes of sweet apples, wet hay and a bit of grass. Mostly sweet with a funky edge.

The body is medium with soft carbonation. Overall this one is solid. Enjoyable enough.

Yellow-orange color with a large white head. The aroma did not jump out at me but had some nice hints of lemon peel, coriander, and floral hops. Luckily, the flavor packed more of a punch with lemon and peppercorn spice dominating the palate. Dry mouthfeel but it made me want to take another sip. Paired very well with some sushi. Nice offering from Sly Fox and a good representation of the style.

A- Pours A nice Golden Orange color with a 2 finger white head

S- Smells of pear and apples, also has some orange notes and grass as well. I also am getting some maleness and yeast.

T- Starts off with a nice sweet fruit flavor. the apples and pears you can taste, it has a nice bitter orange flavor in the middle and finish's with a sugary maltyness.

M- Has a medium body with good carbonation

D-Overall this is a good saison. Not my favorite ever but nothing you can really knock it on.

Once dislodged, the exploded out of the bottle like champagne. The pour produces 80% head, but it settles quickly, leaving lots of thick webby lace. The liquid has a mild haze. The color is golden.

Classic sour flower smell of a farmhouse ale. Missing is the the barnyard element, which makes this more appealing, IMHO. Light yeast, no hop.

Starts with a mild pale malt (dry) flavor. There is plenty of spice that comes quickly--white pepper, coriander, nutmeg and cinnamon. It is particularly pronounced in the swallow, although the aftertaste fades soon. The alcohol is notable. The body is typical for the style as is the heightened carbonation.

A-From the big bottle the cork exploded off when started. A bit of a champagne overflow. Pours a cloudy pale gold with a giant white cotton head.
S-The smell is bananas and lemon there must be hefe yeast in here.
T-Saisons are so all over the place in taste, but this one is very simple and refreshing. It has small hefe banana taste and some citrus and finishes with faint black pepper taste. It leaves a little spicy taste in your mouth.
MO- Light and refreshing in spite of a 6.9 abv. This was one of August beers for our BOTM. It was great pick and I will definitely go for this one again.

This is a lovely beer. A company rep gave me a hit from his growler at Whole Foods in NYC where he had a table set up for tastings. Great guy. The beer is light-colored, pale yellow, with a subtle aroma - I don't really trust my nose, esp. when allergies are hitting me hard. But the taste was delightful, spicy and complex while still being light, crisp, and refreshing. I really enjoyed this one, it has nice, delicate flavors that weren't too overtly subtle. Tremendous drinkability, A perfect summer quencher. Falls in the middle of the saison spectrum...the flavors are all there without being too tart or sour like some I've tried. On the other hand, I had a Sam Adams Rustic Saison a few days earlier and there was simply nothing there. Dull, bland, boring. This one strikes a perfect balance.

Purchased at the brewpub in Royersford. Poured into a tulip and my god what a gusher. About the amount of a double shot poured into a glass and the rest is all heading. A bit scary as I my first thought was an infection but no just waiting to get out and be drank. I should have let breath a bit. Anyway A nice hazy yellow body and a crazy amount of bubbling action going on.

Nice fruity aroma's with a beaautiful like syrup sweetness mixed with some grainy notes.

The aroma wasn't that overwhelming but the taste to this bad boy had me excited.Nice wheat malt taste with a tremendous mix of light fruits and candy sugar and finishes with a slight pepperiness.

Nice even steven medium body, with great carbonation.Slight bit of slick butteriness in the mouth but in no way thick and sappy.

Very easy to go down and a very tasty saison. This one had me by surprise.

750ml to pint glass.
From the pop of the cork and the size of the head, it's safe to assume there's plenty of carbonation. With a soft pour, I still have a glass that's mostly head. As the foam fades, a pale golden elixir rises up my glass. Smells tasty. Lots of ripe fruit and earthy spices. Palate is a tad raw but very tasty and complex. Earthy grains and spices play a big role with a green apple tartness complimenting it. Mouthfeel is lively and quite dry on the finish, making it hard to stop drinking. Solid effort that is worthy of a try and a great choice for warm weather drinking.

Received in the blind bif #4...thanks to sholland119.

Pours a clear, pale golden color. A moderate pour yields half head, and half beer in my glass. The head is white, and frothy. The head falls rather fast to a cap that leaves rings, and spots of lacing.

I smell mild soap, spice, candied ginger, herbs, sourdough, a faint hint of bubblegum, and spring flowers. Very aromatic, and pleasant.

Its flavor is nice and spicy. Coriander, white pepper, herbs, a faint hint of apple, and more flavors that I fail describe.

Medium body, lots of carbonation, and very dry. It feels a bit warm on my tongue.

A delicious beer with an outstanding aroma. A couple glasses of this would leave me satisfied. I would like to try this beer again.
