The first time I tried this beer was at the brewery while he was brewing the stout as well...watching scott pour the black strap molassas in the wort released a wonderful smell in the brewey. This is a great stout with a nice dark black body and dark tan head. great sweet, woodt smokey smell. Nice coffe chocalate and molassas taste and a all round nice and easy to drink stout!

poured into my EE pint glass from my draft system. Reviewed on cask before, but not on draft.

Very dense creamy mocha head from a very long pour. Hard to get lot of head on this beer when first tapped had no head at all. Started to get a slight head after a few hours and more after a few days. Mirky black with a slight dark brown hue. Opaque to say the least. Had very good retention leaving sticky webby lacing down the glass.

Very roasty aroma, smokey, burnt, black coffee, baker chocolate, molassess with a slight hint of vanallia. Very intense malty aroma.

Clean taste at first followed by intense roastyness, lot of burnt tastes, unsweetend bakers chocolate, black coffee, molasses and a bit of licorace.Very nice balance for all the intensity, finishes clean with a very sharp hop bite and lots of roastyness. Leaves the palate feeling dry and tart. Lots going on here. Great and interesting taste good complexity.

Light mouthfeel, suprizing, some creamyness and a grainy edge.
The drinkability seems to increase with every sip. This stout borders on Imperial. Great stout my draft system has not seen the last of this one. Must try stout in my book.

Thoroughly enjoyed on draft at Oscar's Pub in Erie, PA...appears dark black opaque in the dimlighting of this pub full two finger sized tan head leaves big bands of lacing with each sip of this fine stout. Aroma contains dark roasted malt characteristics of dark chocolate and big coffee notes along with the black strap molasses added to the brew giving a full syrupy flow to it all herbal hop aroma is evident chalk full of alluring aromatics. Taste is very flavorful complex malt character comes of bitter with the dark chocolate roasts and herbal hops combined with the sweet molasses we have ourselves one of the most drinkable stouts ever brewed in the Pittsburgh area a bready layer also comes through in the flavor. Mouthfeel to me is medium-full bodied great creamy texture flows nicely on the palate mine didn't last too long. Drinkability up there with some of the top micro stouts in the country could definitely put this small but active brewery on the map nationally...at least among beer geeks.

Surprise growler by the wonderous ericwo!

Pours extremely black with a monster dark tan to light brown head.

Smells of roast coffee, blackstrap molasses, dark chocolate. This is going to be some treat if it tastes half as good as it smells.

And it does! Taste pretty much mirrors the smell.

Perfect carbonation but that thin, light mouthfeel is where this beer falls a little flat. The low ABV is very much appreciated but for a stout, I'd like a more viscous sensation.

Overall, this was what I wanted. I can deal with a light feel in comparison to all of the other aspects East End got right with this one. Thanks Eric!

Growler from the brewery via pghlee.

Pours opaque black with a one-finger brown head. The head recedes into a patchy layer of bubbles on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of roasted malts with hints of chocolate.

Tastes very good. Roasted malts up front, followed by light chocolate flavors, and ending with a nice tobacco presence. The bitterness lingers for a while after the sip, with hints of coffee.

Mouthfeel is good. Good thickness and soft carbonation make this one go down smoothly.

Drinkability is good. I had to do a lot of damage on the growler by myself, and had no qualms with doing so.

Overall this was a tasty stout - a lot of flavors manage not to get in the way of each other to make this very enjoyable.

Thanks DrJay for this Gowler.
Pours pitch black with a quarter finger tan head that quickly melted away.
Aroma is intensely dark roasted coffee and bakers chocolate.
The taste is also intense..dark bitter roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate, then a lightly bitter hop finish.
Mouthfeel is comfortable for the style and the aftertaste is a lingering hint of everything good in this stout.
This is a very good, drinkable, solid example of the style.
Yummy

poured from a growler filled last weekend, 12oz serving in a Stone Levitation glass...

A - very thin layer of dark, dark khaki foam which fell quickly to a ring and floating island. sits atop a beer that is about pitch black.

S - big and bold...strongly roasted malts, strong black coffee, bits of toffee, molasses (hence the name), charcoal, slightly burnt toast. very nice stout with the nose of an RIS.

T - again, strong roasted and burnt malts...joined in by some coffee-like bitterness. sweetness comes through as some dark chocolate and molasses. very nice but a touch more sweetness to cut into the strong bitterness would take this a step further.

M - the beer has a medium to thinnish body, and nice subtle "underneath" carbonation as with most East End beers. quite sticky/chewy towards the end, leaves a strong lasting bitterness that lingers for quite a bit.

D - solid American Stout...not shy by any means, has the massive roastyness of some bigger beers. just missing a touch more sweetness for balance. drinkability is on the higher side before bitterness takes over. nicely done Scott.

Back in Johnstown, PA and sitting at the Boulevard Bar and Grill and first beer for the night was the East End Blackstrap Stout. The color was a dark chocolate and creamy with a nice tan head. The aroma was dominated by espresso and malt. The taste tho was a bit water...not as full bodied as I would like. The flavor was certainly espresso with hints of sweetness and malt. Mouthfeel for me was low due to the overpowering espresso/coffee taste.

On-tap at Bocktown Beer and Grill

Appears pitch black with a milk chocolate colored head. The aroma is almost meaty, but I'm not sure if I like that. There's dry cocoa with balancing hops and a slight bitterness and an aftertaste of long, long lasting black roasted grains. It remind me a bit of Middle Ages's Black Heart Stout. Big, black, roasted grains. Aside from a slightly odd aroma (maybe it's just me), this was a pretty tasty beer. Glad I got to try it

Appearance - Virtually black with an attractive sustained head.

Smell - Inky with liquorice and tar.

Taste - Flavor is similar to smell. Thin and lean with a nice dry finish that lingers of roasted coffee and tar.

Mouthfeel is nice and drinkability is even better.
