To start; I must apologize this review is from notes taken 10 days ago. I never wait that long to review a beer but I wanted to do this review justice and not just bang one out. I have been extremely busy in that last week and failed to catch up on my notes until now. When I get another chance I will replace this review.

I had the opportunity to spend an evening with, Slatetank Mughugger HombreWing and a lot of great beer. I wanted to pull out something special and I new this would be a tasty treat. It is certainly young. There is no doubt this sweet beer will be better in a couple of years but it is worth a taste now.

Appearance: Pours a murky golden rod color with an adequate head with little retention on this monster abv beer.

Smell: Gentle juicy malts and a berry flavor, a hint of sugary Bazooka bubble gum, some more berry alcohol candy bordering Jolly rancher but I couldn't quite place my finger on it. Slatetank pointed out that it was similar to a Sloe Gin. I pulled out a bottle and tasted some Sloe Gin side by side with the Gratitude 2006 and hot damn that *is* it; damn close anyway. Very well done Matt!

Taste: The taste is again like the nose is dominantly sweet. Raw sugars and candy like sweetness step aside to reveal berry flavors particularly the Sloe Berry with the warm alcohol that is quite reminiscent of the Gin or even a brandy. A hint of wood flavors and other spices linger with the sweetness on the palate. Very nice!

Mouthfeel: A dream across the tongue. It is exceptionally soft and smooth with a spice kick.

Drinkability: It is certainly sweet and it is hot and yet it is quite tasty and easy to swallow. I really wish I had more of it. I was happy to share this beer but I could handle it on my own as well.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

Slaying a personal whale. Split with angrybabboon. 2013 vintage.

Appearance: Ruddy dark copper. Head is dirty-white/pale tan, bubbly, creamy and dense. Sticky notches of lacing. Moderate carbonation.

Smell: Mega malty. Deeply cooked and caramelized malts. Bready and then some. Biscuit with a touch of graham cracker. Sharp bite of alcohol with caramel, brown sugar, and a ton of toffee. Some pine and citrus hops layered over the top. Decently fruity with apple, pear, and some deeper almost jammy sweetness. Slight alcohol spicy esters. A ton of sweet malts. Bready, cooked, and caramelized in abundance. Slight toasted element with some minor roasted malts as well.

Taste: Cooked and crazy caramelized malt. Some molasses, a ton of caramel, a load of toffee. Graham cracker and a ton of raw biscuit dough. Sweet and boozy. Bit of alcohol on the back with some spicy alcohol esters. Some orange peel and marmalade as well. A touch of mint along with some solid pine needle bitterness and a solid smack of grapefruit. Hoppy, sweet, and boozy. Slightly roasted with a toasted undercurrent. Toast and the gamut of sugar.

Mouthfeel: Chewy nearly full body with a moderate carbonation. Surprisingly clean.

Overall: Give thanks for the many splendored birds.

Need more bottles for science. Must age for comparison.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this

Note: 2013 bottle, violet wax

Appearance: Medium amber, with some nice copper, brown, and red tones - hazy and cloudy, just as a barleywine should be - pours with a medium sized, frothy, light beige head - leaves some nice spots of lacing

Smell: Big, sweet, cooked and caramel malts - caramel grains and caramelized malts - big toffee notes with a touch of brown sugar and molasses - rich malts - some interesting fruitiness, with light and dark fruits - definitely smells young (because it is), with some booze

Taste: Straight-up barleywine magic - cooked, caramelized malts - nice caramel malts with some hints of sugar, brown sugar, molasses, toffee, and straight-up caramel - some light fruits and some dark fruits, like grapes, plums - moderate amount of bitterness - minimal oxidation, thanks to the fact that this is young - will definitely mature and improve with some time, but it's surprisingly good now

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body, very smooth, nice level of carbonation

Overall: Dude, gratitude

This is a great barleywine. The most impressive thing is that it tastes great, even young. This will only improve in time. This is hard to get, but it's worth seeking out.

Purple waxed bottle.

Appearance: opaque light brown. No head present. It's really nothing outlandish; it's very simple and straight forward.

Smell: Ton of vanilla, dark fruits, and some ripe bananas. Also a touch of oak. Very sweet and inviting.

Taste: Wow, it's so delicious. It starts out really sweet and mellow; some bitterness just gradually comes in but nothing too aggressive. Tasted notes of vanilla, dark fruits and a subtle spiciness. This really is outstanding, it's such a simple barleywine that doesn't over complicate things. But what really blew me away is it's sweetness. It's sweetness was concocted so well yet it's not cloying.

Mouthfeel: very smooth and silky with minimal carbonation

Overall: this is outstanding. It's not a complicated barleywine; instead its simple, sweet, and mellow.
