750ml paper covered blue waxed bottle poured into a sampler.

Pours a clear amber honey color with a small white head. Nose is sweet and malty, light hop bitterness, really good.

Taste is balanced and mellow, good bitterness and a nice hoppy rich bite on the end. The finish is really good (290 characters)

2013 vintage (violet wax) poured into my Great Lakes 25th Anniversary hybrid tulip...

A. Pours an extremely sexy copper with bit of summery haze. Head is robust. About two fingers of light khaki head that settles to a half finger. The suds are thick, creamy, leaving a consistent, tight coating along the glass. One of the prettier and creamier heads I've seen in some time. Beautiful beer.

S. Brown sugar, molasses, cherry, orange zest, burnt caramel. Hops notes are there...slightly citrusy and piney...but faint. This is a highly refined nose for an American Barleywine...the fruit and caramelized sugar is most apparent, while hops take a back seat. Smells like a hearty, thick, loaf of nut bread. Really nice.

T. Opens with cherry, grape, caramel, and brown sugar. Then notes of toffee and hints of pine. Finish is a toasted caramel sweetness tempered with drying hops. Wow.

M. Carb is light-moderate and the body is full, complex, and very creamy. It's on the sweeter side, but what a showcase in malt. It has a thickish mouthfeel, with big biscuit and toasted dough notes blended with stone fruits.

O. One of the best American Barleywines I have had. Easily the best non-barrel aged example of the style. An excellent balance of sweetness, drying hops, and booze. Amazing mouthfeel. Very complex and worthy of its praise. Outstanding.

P.S. The bottle presentation is the best I've ever seen. Truly a work of art. Sorry to see they won't be packaging it like this anymore, but happy to have a few vintages in my cellar to admire and enjoy. (1,551 characters)

Bottle number 968 of 1,500. 2009 vintage with blue wax with a blue jay on the paper label/wrap. This is my first East End beer and one that I have been looking forward to trying. The beer pours a brownish-amber color with a very small white head. The aroma is brown sugar and cherries with possibly some oak. The flavor is cherry, oak, caramel malt and alcohol. The flavor is semi-sweet. Low carbonation and medium mouthfeel. (473 characters)

2007 vintage: 674 of 1500. Purchased at Capones. Pours with a good bit of head which settles quickly. Amber in color. Smells very sweet and fruity. Taste is a wonderful mix of fruit and malt. Mouthfeel is smooth despite the ABV and this is really drinkable. Wow, this is a fantastic barleywine. Highly recommended.

Batch 310 out of 600. Finally got to try this beer had it since last
Oct. The WVbeergeek talked his way into it at the Map Room in Swissvale on one of our beer trips.

Came in a brown wrapper felt like it had a wax coating of some sort on it. A 1pt. 9.3oz bottle with a crimped cap with a tough wax seal looked the the stuff you dip tool handles into and about as tough. Split it with the WVbeergeek into a Mad Elf Tulip glass. Sorry about the Troegs glass Scott they just barely edged you out of 30th place in the top BA brewery list.

Poured with a reddish/orange color under on hurricane lamp on the deck looked about the same inside the house,very mirky had a cider like apperance with lots of sediment could see a few very tiny bubbles stringing from the sides of the glass. Off white head very thick and creamy with an allmost never die retention leaving thick curtians of lace down the glass.

Very sweet burnt carmell aroma,complex with lots of fruityness mostly dark fruits figs and raisins with a hint of apple. A slight tinge of alcohol,some vinious aromas,also spicy with a note of nutmeg. Inticing couldn't wait to taste.

A very sweet, sugary, heavy carmel taste like in the aroma, lots of dark fruit figs/dates a touch of raisin. Vinious with a juicy booziness but enjoyable not overbearing. Has a quick sharp bitterness,puckering, very well balanced. Very complex tastes almost hard to describe. Seemed to taste a bit different with ever sip. The best tasing barleywine i've had so far.

Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Thick with some cloying,yet still has a somewhat light feel. Goes down nice,but a definate sipper. Amazing beer wish I had more of this beer stashed away. (1,704 characters)

Copper and glowing dark orange with very little visible carbonation and very little, if any, head--surprising. Leaves the glass nearly clean and a bit oily.

Lovely aroma consisting of subtle citrus, sweet caramel and toffee, and a bit of earthy, rich vanilla. While what's here is extremely nice, I'm surprised at how far away the aroma seems. I wish everything in here was more magnified and more "in your face." Though, there isn't a hint of alcohol heat, which is incredible.

The taste follows the aroma: sweet citrus, sticky caramel and toffee, and a bit of earthy vanilla. Delicious, though uncomplicated--simple. No alcohol heat--impressive.

Thin to medium mouthfeel with very low carbonation.

I feel like this barleywine quite didn't reach it's potential. Perhaps with better carbonation, the flavors could have shined more. (907 characters)

The green wax 2008 vintage poured into a six ouce tasting glass. If I recall correctly, the bottle was 652/700, but I pitched it already and can't quite remember. Learned a little lesson about cellaring paper covered bottles in damp areas today though when it came out of the basement completely covered in mold...that being said, it didn't affect the beer any.

Appearance- Pours a nice deep brown into my glass with a small tan cap. Looks quite thick and sticky. Not a whole lot of carbonation, but certainly enough for the style. The head actually sticks around for the entire duration of the drink (6 oz. initially, followed by another 2 oz.) and a good deal of lacing is left in the glass as well.

Smell- Oooh boy, this one smells sweet, but in a good way. A whole hell of a lot of caramel and brown sugar in the nose along with some sweet smelling candy fruit as well. Reminds me on the whole a little bit of spiced rum. Despite the overwhelming sweetness, I find the nose to be quite pleasant with the touch of fruitiness and sugar sweetness. Almost like a candied apple or a fruitcake.

Taste- The sweetness hits you right up front on this one. Almost no hops but a whole lot of caramel malt. Rounded out with a subtle spiciness and hint of dark fruit. Pretty much no alcohol burn whatsoever (makes sense given the level of sweetness). I'm really digging this, goes down really smooth and just enough complexity and spice to round out the sweetness. Not much like other barleywines I've had, but impresses me nonetheless.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- I can't say a whole lot about the mouthfeel of this one other than it was about on par for what I'm used to with the style. Very thick and syrupy and easily coats the mouth, with just enough carbonation to keep it going down easily. I found it also to really have an impressive level of drinkability for its level of sweetness and the style, I think given how smooth it was and the lack of alcohol bite.

Overall, I really liked this and hope to pick up another bottle and perhaps the '07 vintage as well before I head out of the Pennsylvania area. Highly recommended. (2,125 characters)

East End Gratitude Red Wax 2005

#310 out of 600 on this hand written portion of the brown paper label, first I have to thank Margie from the Map Room for the opportunity to purchase this from her five bottle stash set aside for her brothers Christmas presents, well that fifth brother should have like beer a little more.

Appears a ruddy orangish red tone with a real murky haze to it especially once the whole bottle gets poured forms a large sized fine bubbled creamy caramel tan head lacing forms with each sip and stayed on until I emptied my glass.

Aroma has a brown sugar glazed fruit flow to it comes with pear, plum, raisin really overall a carmelized slightly burnt breadiness mildly spiced with tobacco leaf herbal effects, some vinous tartness and other well rounded earthy herbal hops thrown in.

Flavor brings sugary esters and fruit tones galore more ripened plums, raisins, and a touch of passion fruit some pear/pineapple funk going on the sweetness is almost syrupy but enough of the burnt sugar comes from the wealthy malt bill to take the edge off not overly boozy but definitely detectable not US hopped takes the UK approach on this one in a good way earthy tobacco leaf in the finish really complements this barleywine.

Mouthfeel is full bodied lucious creamy sticky texture really flows with an even carbonation incredibly smooth for such a big beer stays on the palate with a welcomed aftertaste.

Drinkability an all out eye opener I got to sample this on cask at the East End open house and this stuff was incredible then with a bit of age on this bottle it's even better really will induce cravings for more after sharing with a my BA buddy jcdiflorio we both agreed we wished we had another bottle, only 600 bottles glad we had a shot at it. This is world class beer brewed in Pittsburgh, congrats again on Scott's recent recognition in the BA magazine.

East End Gratitude Barleywine Ale 2006 Orange wax seal 11.4% abv Pittsburgh, PA

Appearance is deep semi clouded blood orange amber with a tan head rising above the rim of my Piraat chalice. Lacing is thick and chunky in all of this beers aged beauty, unlike many others I've held onto this beer since the original release. A lot of the time was spent in jcdiflorio's cellar so I wouldn't be tempted to crack it prematurely, since yesterday I celebrated my 26th birthday I decided now was the time to break out the 2006 Gratitude. I think I'll snag a bottle of 2007 to hold onto until my next birthday. Did I mention the head retention and intricate lacing effortlessly coats the entire chalice, great looking barleywine.

Aromatics offer a harmonious blend of juicy over ripened fruit notes with tropical pineapple and plum brandy colliding. Big luscious hops offer up citrus peels and pine cone scents that bring you back to nature. Caramelized brown sugar and a soothing alcohol with borderline medicinal qualities also play a role in the experience. Bold American hops stand up well creating one hell of an East Coast Barleywine bred and brewed right here in the Burgh, once again amazing stuff.

Flavor coats the palate with sweet pineapple semi tart drizzled with caramelized brown sugar and soaked in plum brandy. Somewhat hot with alcohol but what good Barleywine isn't. Aggressive high alpha acid hop bursts bring citrus and pine cone with an earthy organic quality. Flavors work well I have a feeling based off of the draft version from it's initial release that this one is drinking it's prime. After adding the yeast sediment to my glass another layer of liquid bread quality overcomes an already fantastic drinking experience. Perfect blend of tooth numbing sweetness and enamel eating hoppiness, either way my mouth is tingling.

Mouthfeel is amazing velvet smoothness in the carbonation, medium to fuller bodied. Sticky edges from residual sweetness definitely bind to my palate, with hop oils really lubricating the situation. Great overall mouthfeel I can't wait until I age another of Scott Smith's incredibly complex malt and hop extravaganzas.

Drinkability easy to hoard and drink in a dark room by yourself or share with family and friends at a party. Even if the crowd may not understand Barleywines like most of us on this site, I guarantee if you offer a few samples of this brew around the room that you will open some palates up to new experiences possibly peak enough interest to pass on the craft beer revolution. Complexity with stunning adhesiveness breeds excellence in this style of beer, so far since 2005 Gratitude East End has nailed just that. 2010 poured into a GI tulip. Part of the NWI tasting group New Year's Day

A - Chestnut brown with lemon hues. Reminds me of a light syrup in color. A bit hazy and looks thick. There is only a slight white head that lingers on the edges

S - Light bready malt with a slight piney hop presence that still remains. I also get orange and lemon in the nose

T - Bready malt and light brown sugar upfront. There is also dates and figs, orange peel and light lemon. There is a slight bitterness that lingers in the finish

MF - Medium body with light syrupiness. Clean finish with only a light astringent and bitterness that remains on the finish

O - Solid barleywine that definitely leans towards the bready and malty side. Worth trying a bottle if you can get ahold of one. (770 characters)

750ml paper wrapped bottle poured into a snifter. Notes.

A: Pours a rawny orange. Solid head forms and holds nicely. Lots of lacing.

S: Lots of alcohol. Maple syrup and sweet toffee. Plums.

T/M: Lots of alcoholic dark fruits. Definitely plums. A touch of tart fruitiness. Very phenolic. Hops add a touch of citrus and an aged bitterness. Body is medium full with smooth carbonation. Warming alcohol.

D: Big ABV and definitely a slow sipper. I like it a lot, though. (557 characters)

Review from notes. 2010 Vintage.

A: Pours a clear brown color with a small tan head on top made up of rather large bubbles. Quickly, the bubbles reduce to a ring on top, minimal lacing.

S: Lots of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar as well as a good amount of fruit - some raisin, fig, and plum.

T: Similar to the aroma, but better. A great mixture of caramel, brown sugar, and toffee, but much smoother and blended together better than the aroma (not that it was bad on the aroma, the flavor was just better). More dark fruit mixed in as well.

M: Medium to full bodied with low to medium carbonation, extremely smooth.

O: One of the best barleywines I have had, rich and complex, but extremely smooth and easy drinking for style and abv. Fantastic. (757 characters)
