Busch Beer had it's turn yesterday, making Icehouse the beer for today here in the College Invitational. Made by the Plank Road Brewery according to the can label, but we all know Miller is the one behind this. Served right out the fridge and into a stange, on to the beer:

Typical pale gold color with a nice foamy head on top. Corn and some funky processed sweet scent (reminds me of Tab soda) are in the smell, not much else. We now get to the meat and potatoes of this beer and find no offensive flavors, pretty clean. That's the good news. Unfortunately, I was wondering when the beer flavor went. Maybe it ran away because I can't find it. The extra slap of alcohol from this brew is slighly felt on the palate, but more so in the throat. It creates a little bit of bitterness and zip to what is a pretty blah taste.

I want to stop, but I can't. I must press on to rate it's "buzzability" (a special side challenge here in the College Invitational). I'm giving the Buzzability a 3 for this beer.

Two down, two to go. Natural Ice is coming up soon.

Perfectly carbonated for that immediate "over full" feeling upon consumption.
Pairs nicely with a brown paper bag, chicken cup-a-noodles cooked at a gas station coffee machine and poor life choices. My personal favorites.

IF IT AIN'T THE HOUSE, YOU'RE WEARIN' A BLOUSE.

Poured from a tallboy into a shaker pint glass. A label on the can states the beer is "ice brewed below freezing". A moderate pour produce about 3/4 inch of white froth that disappears quickly enough but leaves a thin coating of lace that hangs around, slowly thinning out. The beer is a pale straw color with ample carbonation.

Adjuncty, floral hop aroma, but of course very light on the hops- but the floral hops are there and detectable. A definite cooked corn flavor is present, a rather bland presence that lingers into the aftertaste, which is otherwise pretty clean. I also get a bit of a slightly fruity alcohol flavor with some metallic tang. No musty or cardboard flavors. The body is predictably thin and somewhat oily.

For what it is, this isn't half bad, though quite bland overall. There is maybe a bit more hop character than than the average AAL, and it's cheap enough. It's smooth compared to a typical malt liquor, and as strong as the weaker varieties of that style. There are worse beers out there, and though I probably won't seek this out again, I wouldn't refuse one either.

Good ole Icehouse. Due to Oklahoma's silly liquor laws, most BMC beers were brewed at 3.2 abv. Icehouse was not. I drank a lot of Icehouse my sophomore year. I do not remember it fondly.

A: Macro lager golden. Finger of bleached head. Dies immediately. Fairly well carbonated, with large bubbles rising to the surface. No lacing.

S: Corn, millet, metal. Nondescript spiciness (hops?). Some alcohol sweetness present. Not willing to let this one warm. Must consume cold, the name basically demands it.

T: That is pretty bad. Not quite as bad as I remember it, though. Lots of corn and other adjunt flavors. Missing that cornflake component I get in Miller and Bud Light. Fruity sweetness, almost like artificial white grape juice. Grainy corn comes on the finish, along with some metal astringency.

M: Light, crisp. Less carbonated than anticipated. While the bubbles are very present, they lack the overly abrasive seltzer characteristics of many AAL's and Euro Pales.

O: This is nowhere nearly as bad as the 51 Beer Advocate is giving it. While it's not a good or even solid beer, it's better than the BMC's and far better than the Natty and Keystone level beers.
