It's a bit surprising to see this German-styled brewery, which takes pride in its heritage, to be brewing a style that is nowhere German; the imperial stout. A 600 ml bottle was given to me as a gift from Guillerme, who said that he really enjoys this one. Valeu! On to the beer:
The color is a shiny shade of black, and its head is short and only puts a few bits of itself on the glass. The nose is a step towards the right direction. There are aromas of charcoal, a touch of chcolate syrup, and even hints of banana.
The American versions of the style bombard you with loads of maltiness and sometimes hops. This Brazilian version does feature some pleasant dark chocolate notes, but not to be confused as a bombardment. Banana and complementing roast round it out. The body is medium full, so it's at the right point.
BIS already made me curious beforehand, and more importantly lives up to the billing afterwards. Having already tasted the Pale Ale in Blumenau, it looks that Bierland has the ability to re-create good versions of non-German styles.

Roast, chocolate, but somewhat thin and lacking in strong flavors. Slight astringency. Slight sweet aroma, light chocolate. Color is a bit light, dark brown. Solid for the style, but nothing that overwhelms or excites.

Deep black color with a dark caramel head with low retention.
Strong coffee aroma with hints of piney hops and booze.
Flavor of toasted malts with strong coffee notes. Prunes, licorice and brown sugar are also present. Dry aftertaste with its residual taste and a good hop bitterness.
Medium to full body with low carbonation, a bit oily. Alcohol is clearly felt (which was not expected given the “low” 7% ABV for its style) but not so offensive.
Good imperial stout, well crafted, just a bit too sweet.

Snifter. It's going to be tough to follow up Hodgson's Double IPA and Raccoon Imperial Black IPA, but I think Bierland Imperial Stout just might be up to the task.
A: A hard pour yields a deep brown body with traces of dark red. The head is a fast fading light brown cap.
S: Rich bittersweet earthy dark chocolate blends with roasted grains and a hint of coffee. Brown sugar meets strong blackstrap molasses notes. I get a touch of oxidation with restrained dark fruit characteristics.
T: Dark chocolate is accompanied by brown sugar, licorice, and lightly roasted malt. There's a lower moderate earthy bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden. I get some blackstrap molasses as well. The finish is smooth and balanced with a little plum.
M: Upper medium to lower full body with lower high carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky, silky, and chewy.
Overall: A complex and balanced Russian Imperial Stout that's quite enjoyable.

From a 600 mL bottle, thanks Jon,
A: Pours a deep brown to black with a moderate off-white head, spotty lace.
S: Nose brings chocolate, molasses, some fruitiness, fig.
T: Lots of dark chocolate, charcoal. Good flavour, really like a mix of Lion and Sam Smith's, maybe with a little Cooper's thrown in for good measure. Definitely has that Export thing going on.
M: Medium-bodied, not to heavy, chalky.
O: A solid effort, it's nice to see an imperial stout these days that isn't crazy and over the top, just a nice balanced beer.
