Notes/Commercial Description:
American amber ale, with a rich red hue. Made with American variety hops used to produce a medium-high hop bitterness, flavor, and aroma. The hops help to balance the malty caramel character. With a medium-full body, this ale has subtle fruity aromas and flavors sure to please any beer lovers palate!

Picked this (and 2 other Charleville brews) as singles at a Trader Joe’s in St. Louis.

Appearance: Hazy amber, with only slight carbonation, and no lace to speak of. Could use some improvement here, already. Not a promising start.

Aroma: Caramel and toffee maltiness, and a hint of sweetness. Pretty solid amber characteristics, so points for being “on style”.

Taste: Rich and malty sweet, with more of those caramel and toffee notes, and a slight hint of fruitiness in there. I get a touch of hop bitterness coming in near the finish, too. Despite the low carbonation, this one’s pretty decent for the style, though not one I’d pursue again.

Dark honey hued body with a lasting one-finger thick head, creamy and white. Very little aroma but does suggest some caramel and tree nuts. Taste has strong burnt sugar and caramel and toffee notes; just a slight hint of hop bitterness. Solid medium body with a rich and tingling mouthfeel.

I was ready to greatly downgrade the taste on my first sip -- it seemed pretty weak but very quickly blossomed into a rich, satisfying malt experience. I was a tad disappointed with a pretty weak aroma, but overall, this is a very nice amber ale. It delivers a solid malt backbone and doesn't let the hops unbalance the style. Nothing exceptional yet solid all around. I'd love to get more of this stuff...

Pours out to a thin but permanent head and moderate lacing. Color is a murky dark amber. Aroma is of dark specialty malts, roasted nuts (pecans? reminds me of those pecan ales brewed down south) and slightly salty and smoky (very faint phenolic). Flavor is very much malt forward and transports my mind back to the 1990's when the Amber Ale was the dominant style in what was called simply microbrewing back then. Any way, it is roasty, on the dry side of the style and has a very subtle hop bitterness to balance out the residual sweetness. Mouthfeel is rough and jagged that reminds me of the slight astringency of Southern Pecan Ale but more intense. Regardless, I like this respite from hop-mania that has complexity, depth of flavor and just makes me feel good, remembering the good times when I was younger.
