Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Chimay goblet - this thing must have been shaken up loads before it got to me, because it left about 1/8 of the glass with liquid, and the rest was head, on the second go the glass overflowed massively with foam as well.

Pours a hazy, honey-like gold colour. Massive head and decent lacing.

Smells strong with some classic belgian pale medicinal tones as well as a bit of spice.

Tastes... man this beer is hot! Alcohol and medicinal tones and a slight spice really warms you right up, as well as getting you nicely marbled. A balanced taste, improved by a terrific medium-thick mouthfeel.

Overall an immense brew, warming and complex yet amazingly balanced - this is like nectar for me. God bless Glazen Toren!

Appearance - This came out a sharp but clear orange in color with a beautiful bright white head. Everything about this beer looks terrific but the head in particular looks as fluffy as a down pillow. This mind you from a very careful pour.

Smell - The bouquet has all the requisite smells of the style, but everything is of high quality and very distinctive. The coriander aroma for instance is like fresh cilantro seeds just crushed in a mortar and pestle. The hops are mild but again very leafy and distinctive. The light white pepper is lightly bitter but absolutely exquisite.

Taste - The taste is as delicate and distinctive as the smell. There are more hops at the taste making this a heavy-hitting Tripel. The malts definitely play back up but again are of the highest quality. The light candi sugar melts in the mouth.

Mouthfeel - This is a medium to full-bodied ale. The delicate, tickling mouthfeel is pure pleasure and the long, bitter finish is quite satisfying.

Drinkability - This is one of the most harmonious Tripels I have ever had. It went down slow but beautifully, had no sense of alcohol or that dreaded Tripel medicine cabinet, and was delicate as a freshly plucked flower. One of the best Tripels I've ever had!

Comments - The hops for this beer, Saaz, target, styrian, goldings, and cascades, are all picked locally from the town of Meldert, and boy does it show. It's like the difference between making a dinner salad from vegetables bought from the store and those plucked fresh the same day from your own backyard garden.

Poured from a capped 750ml bottle. Born on date for this bad boy's wrapper was 12/30/05. I've seen very few 750ml bottles that are capped and not corked, and even fewer from 2005. Pours a wonderful dark translucent orange with a 3 finger head, head has substantial lasting power with moderate lacing, large amount of sediment. Smells of caramel, sour apples, cider, and belgian yeast. Slight funkiness, more sour apples, sweet candy sugar, very minimal hop bitterness, peppery finish. Sweetness becomes more intense, in a good way as it warms. Excellent refreshing Champaign like bubbles add significantly to the flavor amalgam. Mouthfeel is creamy rich and complex. Highly drinkable, alcohol is totally hidden. A fantastically refreshing Triple even after 3yrs on the shelf @ Oak tree. I still can't believe this didnt have a cork. Well worth a try.

Pale yellow color, leaning toward clearish in presentation. Big head rises very high and takes a minute to settle, thereafter has good staying-power. Laces in dripping clumps on the glass. Aroma is quite yeasty with a somewhat bitter breadfuit tone, not sharp as much as long-lasting. Body is light and made to seem lighter because of high carbonation, similar to the Canaster Winterscotch and something that distracts me. Flavor has some real sharpness to it early, verges on phenolic in flinty metallic properties, with hops and and the base malt seemingly meant to give tastes of white grape. Good Tripel drying at the end. I still find the gassy nature offputting and it hurts drinkability.

750ml bottle, with a paper wrap in place of the standard label.

This beer pours a rather cloudy, medium tarnished golden apricot hue, with a teeming tower of frothy, melted marshmallow eggshell white head, which leaves some random chunky, fuzzy lace around the glass as it slowly disappears.

It smells of muddled light orchard fruit, Belgian yeast, grainy pale malt, candy sugar, white pepper, and zippy floral, earthy, and grassy hops. The taste is semi-sweet pale malt - with a touch of caramel - earthy yeast, an apple and pear fruitiness, simple sugar solution, clove and white pepper spice, and more edgy earthy, weedy, and floral Euro-hops.

The carbonation is active, for certain, but really not manifesting in anything more aggressive than a plucky frothiness, the body on the light side of medium weight, and generally quite smooth, with more than a suggestion of creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the hops still providing stiff opposition to the malt and well-obfuscated alcohol.

An easy-drinking Tripel, if there was ever such a thing - the hops help even out this style's inherent sweetness, and the booze just isn't that hot (and I mean that in a very good way). Quite a healthy (figuratively speaking) serving, too, for just north of a tenner, and something nice to sip on, for a cold Saturday night.

Musty slightly funky yeasty aroma. Great creamy head pour. Light colour. In a word, creamy yeasty milk taste with hop bitterness in the finish. Nicely drinkable, with food. Not for everybody, and not everyone's idea of the triple.ABove average mouthfeel.

Over time, I am reviewing the offerings of De Glazen Toren (Jef Van Den Steen's brewery) in the order that they were first released. Their Saison is highly impressive; among traditional formulations of the style, it stands at or near the apex. Now I'll move on to their Tripel.

Tissue-wrapped 750mL bottle, bottled on March 15th, 2008, cellared for several months between 67˚F and 77˚F. This should be a fairly mature bottle. Lightly chilled then poured into my Trabadour tulip glass. Bottle was a tremendous "gusher" which had me worried, but thankfully this wasn't a sign of spoilage. Sadly, at least one glass worth ended up everywhere but in the glass...

Carrot orange body with bright tangerine-yelllow and amber highlights. Clarity would be good but for the sand-storm of tiny reddish-brown yeast particles caught up in a perpetual cyclone of carbonation. Massive and rather dense lemon-chiffon/beige head leaves a glorious crown of lacing along the sides of the glass, and a fluffy mesa in the center. Retention is rather average for the style though...

Complex and subtle aromatics - faint rock candy, fresh baguette, slightly medicinal but in a good way (iodine/seaweed), cream, earth, and restrained spice (pepper, clove, cardamom). Ineffable esters from the alcohol - a really unique expression that seems to have aged exceptionally.

Another textbook integration of the various elements of the flavor profile: esters, phenols, alcohol, hops, and malt form a kaleidoscope of shifting impressions that synergize in the end. Analogies to orange peel, pepper, clove, leather, clover, cinnamon, honey, and so on could be made but they fall short of revealing the unique sense of provenance in the glass.

While traveling through Sicily, whenever I saw local foodstuffs for sale, they were often described with a curious admixture of pride and humility as "tipica," that is "typical" of the region. The word has a deeper meaning however, about an almost spiritual connection to a distinct location, utilizing traditional practices and/or products of a farm, a town, or a region. There is a similar alchemy at play with this Tripel.

I don't usually like to focus on the intangible qualities of a beer, but there is something about this ale that pulls me away from a more analytical approach to reviewing.

The mouth-feel is not just creamy, but almost buttery - a little too slick perhaps, but not at all hot. Effervescent, but not to the point of being refreshing...though the flavor and aroma are such that drinkability remains very high.

With this rustic yet sophisticated Tripel, De Glazen Toren once again reveals themselves as true artisans with a deep understanding of tradition. Next up to try is their winter scotch ale...if they keep up this pattern throughout their offerings, they may displace De Dolle as my favorite brewery...

Appearance: Opaque, maybe a little too peachy colored for the style but still okay, save for the chunks floating around. Nice clingy white head that had no problem reviving itself with a swirl of the glass.

Smell: For a capped-only bottle, it had a lot of cork notes which was sort of unexpected but not unpleasant, it gave it some dusty attic feel to go with the obvious yeasty, spicy aromas ubiquitous to the style.

Taste: A teeny little bit sweet for just a half second, then the carbonation hits your tongue and attacks you with coriander and maybe allspice, who knows with belgian tripels, maybe it's all yeast. Alcohol is subdued, but then again so was the overall body. A solid trip from a brewery that has been all good so far for me.

A loud hiss is released when the cap comes off...moments later foam is gushing into the sink. Pleasant aromas waft around, well before the glass is poured. First impression was of fruity yogurt, and fresh baked breads. It's a hazy golden pour, with a ton of billowing foam. Sticky lace forms as the glass rests for a minute. Aroma closer inside the glass is of sweet pale malt, with a hint of spice, mildly rich and boozy overall.

Taste follows aroma of pale malt, candy sugar, sort of lightly wheaty. I'd agree with the previous review describing it as an imperial hefe, especially in the smooth mouthfeel and wheat character. Unlike a stronger version of a hefe though, it's a bit sweeter and fairly rich. No banana/clove dynamic really. Hops are there in the finish but take a backseat to the stronger flavors. A pleasant lingering aftertaste of mellow citrus, and sweet esters. A slower sipper, one to share with friends.

De Glazen Toren surely creates unique versions of traditional Belgian styles. This is my second favorite, after the exceptional Jan De Lichte Double Wit.

Bottle: poured a deep cloudy (non-filtered) golden color ale with a super huge white foamy head with great retention and some perfect lacing. Aroma of light sweet peach with some fruity yeasty ester is really intriguing and refreshing. Taste is a well balance mix between some peach, some sweet malt with a well balance dry hops finish and some fruity ester from the yeast. Full body with minimal filtering and some great carbonation. I have to admit to being really impressed by that one.

750 ml bottle purchased from Hi TIme Wine in Costa Mesa, CA. in January 2007 for the princely sum of $13.99- this better be good! Paper on bottle says bottled on 06 April 2006, so this isn't quite a year old when I get to try it in late February, 2007. Best by 2 years after bottling.

Capped bottle opens with a huge fufff sound and a volcano of tripel all over my kitchen counter. This kept flowing like the fake volcano in the old Brady Bunch episode all the way over to the sink, where I was able to vent it off into my Chimay goblet. So much for about 4 ounces of this bottle. This is my second biggest explosion ever (after Mead the Gueze) that I can remember.

Because of this incident, all the yeast (apparently quite a lot) went up into suspension, making this a very cloudy beer. However, the head (and yes, there is plenty) is gorgeous.

But the aroma from this experience- even my wife likes the smell! A mix of fruitiness and spiciness, and general tripel goodness. I can only hope it tastes half as good.

Flavor follows the aroma, but it's spicier. But overall the flavor is pretty mild. A certain coating on my throat (after the swallow) suggests sugar, but it's not really sweet. Good, but not outstanding.

However, the package does make this extremely drinkable. So much so that my wife (who doesn't like tripels) even enjoyed it. Overall good stuff, but I can't say that it's worth the price.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass. Bottled July 25th 2009? Ready to rip this!

A nice simple forming off white head, quite large with soapy bubbles but the head falls VERY fast. Body color is a dull bronze, and amber. Manages it seems a thin but consistent puck on the glass, resting to a good collar.

Nose brings a small heat, a little bit of boozyness but nothing outrageous, and some small floral with a large malt. Not particularly sweet, possibly effervescent sense, giving way to orange and citrus light sensations.

A mild spiced malt, mixes with a sense of small cardamom sweetness in the palate. Mouthfeel is just a little bit fizzy, with a prickly feeling that takes away some of the pleasure. Slightly "gassy". Sweetness of orange and honey comes out later with some nice malt character. Hints at crisp, gets MUCH better as the sips progress with a slow sweetness that creeps out.

Overall quite interesting, a very subdued and subtle for the style I do enjoy it, but not a real out of the park home run. No worries I will never turn this down given the chance.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a hazy golden amber with a half finger fine white head with great retention and lots of lacing. Classic tripel aroma of bready malt, clove, mildly grassy, hints of lemon and light stone fruit, dry and spicy. Flavor is mild bready, slightly caramel malt, clove, light fruit juice, Belgian yeast, hints of lemon and hay, nicely integrated; finishes with light hoppiness, pepper and Belgian yeast and spices, residual semi sweet fruit. Medium bodied with peppery carbonation. A wonderfully understated tripel, seems mild at first as you try to tease out the flavors, but nothing really jumps out, because everything is so well balanced; the big clove and coriander burst common to tripels is not here, just these flavors melded into the fruit and yeast. Complex and satisfying, possibly the best tripel I've ever had.

A: The beer is very hazy yellow in color. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down and consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: The smell is a little chalky and has light aromas of fruits along with notes of yeast.
T: Like the smell, the taste has lots of flavors of Belgian yeast along with notes of chalk and slight bits of pepper.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little creamy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is not your typical tripel and tastes more like a chalky version of a saison.

Poured from a 750ml bottle. Rich, slightly cloudy orange-yellow colour. The nose on this is an amazing fruit basket of melon, muscat grapes and even some floral notes. Beautiful. It has nice, effervescent carbonation and a pleasant mouthfeel. There's a good hop presence on the fruity palate --with plenty of bubblegum, melon and spice flavours -- that balances the alcohol and sweetness nicely. A really original-tasting tripel.

On tap at Kickbacks Gastropub in Jax. Poured into a small snifter. Hazy golden body with a small off-white head. Aroma is of fresh bananas, light caramel and a delicious complex Belgian yeast. Taste is deliciously smooth with flavors of banana, mild hops and yeasty goodness. ABV is nowhere present, amazing. A touch chalky on the mouthfeel. Delicious, through and through, even more tasty upon warming. Wow.

Poured golden in color with an inviting honey like aroma which is quite pleasant.
Initial taste is of honey as well, but that could just be candy or cane sugar sweetness.
Mouthfeel is thick, but not cloying, yet the beer finished quite dry and crisp.
The way the beer goes from sweet to dry so quickly is quite heavenly and makes it extremely drinkable and dangerous... good, not overly memorable in any dimension, but very good overall.

Wrapper says Bottled on 24 Aug 2007 so this bottle is 6 months old.

Clear golden colored beer with a massive white colored head.

The smell is sweet and spicy with a strong herbal aroma and a strong vanilla aroma. Coriander, hot pepper, mint, apple brandy, and caramel are all in here.

The taste begins mildly sweet and spicy with a mint aftertaste...I think. Slightly hot in the mouth possibly from coriander or ginger. The taste just isn't what the smell promises, smells great and tastes sort of average.

Mouthfeel is OK.

Well not the best but not so bad. Though for $14.99 for the bottle it should be world class. Not a bad beer but I think I would drink the Saison again first.

Appearance: Poured a cloudy lemon color with a hint of orange hue. Big white head in my little snifter glass. Gorgeous sticky lacing smattered on the walls of the glass.

Smell: Light fruity aromas of apple and peach along with coriander spice and honey.

Taste: Zesty and lively across the palate with some sweet wheat bread and yeasty flavors along with a light sprinkling of spice. Some hops near the end and dryness in the finish. It is not an over zealous triple but tasty.

Mouthfeel: Very well carbonated but light body underneath and quite quaffable.

Drinkability: The alcohol shows just a tad, but as triples go this one is pretty nice. Still it was nice to share it.

Another fabulous beer at 72 hours of Belgium.

The beer pours an impressive bright gold color with good head retention and excellent lacing. The nose is bit mute, but one gets honey and gingerale. The flavor profile replicates the nose, but is very rich... butter, honey, ginger ale, apple and honey. This beer is terrific. The beer is not heavy and is so easy to drink. This is just fabulous stuff. On tap it is an extra special treat.

The flavors are quite complex, and there is an added element I cant' quite describe. There is almost a chalk/clay flavor, which normally wouldn't be such a great thing, but works very well in cutting the sweetness of this beer.

Excellent stuff....

Birthday beer for Olsen.

G - Tripel Karmeliet tulip

A - It pours a nice peachy-golden hue with small flecks of sediment and a big head that recedes to a persistent sheet of micro-bubbles.

S - The smell is surprisingly bright; expressive notes of pear sparkling cider, caramel, creme brulee and also honey.

T - It is an unusual brew; quite rich. It has a strong honey character but not honey sweetness, with a buttery nuance and suggestions of fresh bread, peppered with small hints of caramel. An especially delicious treat.

M - The feel is great; it totally enhances the brew.

D - I am stunned that this brew has kept as phenomenally as it has. I am actively seeking a fresh one.

LOOK; 25 oz bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy golden color with a pillowy froth going up half the glass. The head has fine staying power and leaves plenty of lace down the glass.

SMELL: Aroma of expressive, fruity, estery Belgian yeast and dry noble hops. Grass, straw, pear, and entrancing alcohol aromas all leap from the glass.

TASTE: Mellow Belgian yeast character with more soft pear and apricot notes. There is a firm hoppy character with woody, earthy, herbal hops providing a light bitterness and slight dryness to the brew. Alcohol heat is barely noticeable with all the delicious flavors. The hop comes out fairly strong and the brewer is very proud of the source of the hops as being the last true link to the hop growing region of Aalst.

FEEL: Light to medium bodied, fairly effervescent, and a complex drying hop finish. Belgian yeast and delicate bitterness carry into an elegant finish.

OVERALL: This is a world class tripel and one of the finer examples of the style. Has a great hop character and the yeast used makes for a delicious beverage. Would pair superbly with herb & oil marinated fish dishes.

my 750ml bottle lists the abv at 8.5%, and it comes wrapped in that glazen toren paper.. this one with a yellow and burnt-orange color scheme.. still similar to the rest. bottled 12/05.

pours a deep yellow with caramelized carrot highlights. lots of crazy carbonation explodes inside the near-clear body, creating a half-a-glass retentive foam that doesn't seem to go away. as a matter of fact, after letting the beer rest for 10 minutes, it's created a 2-inch-high mesa above the glass of bitter froth.

smells of violets.. botanical with a mild, fresh hop and the sweet floral nectar with nature's sour twang. yeast itself is present in the aroma, and gives off more of a wild bacterial odor than i am used to with tripels. despite the unique off-putting nose, it strikes me more as a fresher, hoppier tripel than a fouled experiment.

body is a little overcarbonated and produces a prosecco feel, as bitter and bubbly begins the experience with a sweet finish. a young beer, it really places heavy accent on the raw hop buds here. goldings bring out a real bubblegum character that will probably show more fruit and diacetyl with age to balance it all out. phenolics are here, close to excessive.. thankfully, the medicinal nature is second to the earthy flavors.

an interesting take on the style, and very similar to alot of hoppy belgian pales i have been seeing evolve. this will probably benefit from 6-12 months in a cellar as it tis a bit of a mess now. still enjoyable, far from the best tripel...

750 ml bottle into chalice, no bottle dating. Pours cloudy golden orange color with a fairly dense 1-2 finger white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some decent spotty lacing clings to the glass, with a fair amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of pear, lemon, apricot, honey, grape, caramel, herbal, floral, earth, and light spiciness. Fairly nice and balanced aromas with good strength. Taste of pear, apricot, grape, lemon, herbal, honey, earth, pepper, and light yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of grape, apple, pear, herbal, honey, caramel, earth, and light yeast spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice malty flavor balance; with minimal cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly slick and creamy mouthfeel. Overall this is a very nice tripel. Nice flavor balance and complexity; and very smooth and easy to sip on. I would imagine that his was an older bottle though, and would like to try a younger vintage. Quite enjoyable.

Bottled dec 18 2004. Nice white head that lasts and pale golden color. Nose is fruity and orangepeals in there. More spices in thereand with the wheaty carracter more saisonlike the tripel. Taste is lots pepper, very dry, fruity spiced alcoholic and bitter and hot aftertaste. Yes this is well drinkable but think the amount of carbon dioxide in the brew is massivly overdon. Has as much as champagne I would bet.This makes mouthfeel strange cause the brew just explodes in your mouth and makes mouthfeel more watery. Still plenty of spiced taste and if it wasn't for a exploding belly very easy drinkable and enjoyable.
