Wasn’t sure what I was going to get. I enjoy Sours and I Love Porters. It could be a marriage made in Heaven. It didn’t quite get there, but Very enjoyable.

Decanted into a conical pint glass; no production date. Pours a cola color, little obvious carbonation or head. Bouquet: dark malt with acetic acid notes; palate: cherry juice notable with strong citrus and peppery quality and a strong sour aftertaste. Medium bodied with minimal effervescence. Didn't really pull it all together. See it is no longer brewed; perhaps that was the issue.

this is a delicious sour cherry porter, on tap at barrels and bottles in golden. its a unique beer, only moderately acidic, very heavy on the dark malts and roast elements, and delicate on the cherry. nicely crafted overall. these guys always make the most interesting stuff, and this is no exception. it is shiny jet black in color with under an inch of light brown head. the nose is puckery cherry, a little mature lacto, and some seriously dark grain, not quite smokey or anything, but charred and bitter. it balances out the cherry in the flavor, tastes like cherry juicy to me, and it likes the bitter of the malt. the sourness is average, or lighter than average, but it comes on really late which is unique, and its very drying here, even with the fruit. tastes like it may have spent some time in oak too, there is that mellow tannic property to it. something to sip on, as it opens up a lot as it warms. three elements not often used together really unite well in this. even when i have no idea what it is, i always grab beer from these guys when i see it. they are all so creative and well done. one of the least talked about but most interesting operations out there...

Mmmm I really like this one. Appearance is a pinkish light tan head on a very dark brown beer. Aroma is a delightful slightly tart fruit coffee cocoa, roast, malt, leather. Flavor is similar to nose with tart coming out more and the cherry is exactly perfect. Body is good. Super yummy brew.

I picked up a bottle of Freigeist Salzspeicher Cherry a couple weeks ago for $9.99 at The Lager Mill. I've never heard of this beer before, but it really caught my interest, so lets see how it goes. 2015 Vintage. Poured from a brown bottle into a teku.

A- The label looks nice, it's got an old school look to it, but it isn't too eye catching. It poured a nice black color that took on slight red hue when held to the light with a half fingers wort of bubbly tan head that died down to a thin ring that faded away and it left just a little bit of spotty lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the dark roasted malts being the first to show up and they impart some nice lighter chocolate aromas that are followed by a noticeable butterscotch like aroma which is nice and there's also just a little bit of caramel showing up. Towards the end comes the cherry which is a little on the lighter side, but it's still noticeable and it imparts some nice dark cherry aromas with just a little bit of tartness. This is a pretty nice smelling beer, I wasn't expecting the butterscotch, but I like it.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and complex, it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the malts being the first to show up still and they impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma, but this time they are a little lighter. Up next comes a slightly higher amount of medium sourness with some nice cherry flavors showing up with it and there's just a slight bit of that butterscotch that I got in the aroma. On the finish it's a little salty with a some lingering sourness and some nice cherry flavors showing up in the aftertaste. This is a good tasting beer, but if the malts showed up just a little more it would be great.

M- Fairly smooth, crisp, not too acidic, on the lighter side of being medium bodied with a higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty nice, but I wish it was just a little thicker.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and a good example of th e style, I've had a couple different sour Porters and I would say this one is up there as one of the better ones, I still wish the porter base showed up more, but it did deliver on the sour, salty and cherry flavors. This beer has nice drinkability, one glass is a good amount for me, it might be too much for me if I have more than that. WHat I like the most about this beer is the taste and complexity, it's tasty and pretty complex. What I like the least about this beer was that it wasn't a little more thicker and I wish the Porter base showed up just a little more. I would buy this beer again and I wouldn't mind keeping one around in the cellar. I would recommend this beer if you like sour beers, I don't think it disappoints. All in all I was happy with this beer and a little impressed by the complexity, it's a well made beer. It made for a good first impression of this brewery and I hope to try more of their beers and raspberry version of this one. Good job guys, this is a tasty beer, keep it up.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours nearly pitch black color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big sour cherry, black currant, red wine, chocolate, cocoa, light coffee, toast, dark bread, sea salt, light licorice, hay, straw, grass, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of cherries, dark/roast/bready malts, fruity/acidic yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of sour cherry, black currant, red wine, chocolate, cocoa, light coffee, toast, dark bread, sea salt, light licorice, hay, straw, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/acidic tartness and herbal/roasted bitterness after the finish; with lingering notes of sour cherry, currant, red wine, chocolate, cocoa, light coffee, toast, dark bread, sea salt, hay, grass, and herbal/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, dark/roast/bready malt, fruity/acidic yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and acidic/saline mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice fruited sour porter style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, dark/roast/bready malt, fruity/acidic yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on with the balanced acidity. A very enjoyable offering.
